The Rules of Forever Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 170 ratings

Public school teacher Cara Talarico is determined to pay off her student loans by the time she turns thirty-five and has sworn off everything fun to make it happen—including dating. Attending her high school reunion definitely ranks in the not-fun category. The last thing she expects is to reconnect with Lauren Havemayer, her unrequited crush from ten years ago.

Having just returned from Europe, Lauren barely remembers Cara from their school days but can’t deny the sparks flying between them now. It’s too bad Lauren is abstaining from romance—love has caused her nothing but pain and she doesn’t trust herself or anyone else.

They embark on a cautious friendship with benefits—no feelings allowed. But with their chemistry off the charts no matter how much they try to fight it, feelings are being felt. They both agreed to the rules at the start, but keeping them is more complicated than it seems.

About the Author

Nan Campbell grew up on the Jersey Shore, where she first discovered her love of romance novels as a kid, spending her summers at the beach reading stories that were wholly inappropriate for her age. She was, and continues to be, a sucker for a happy ending.

She is a seasoned traveler, having visited many countries across six continents, and hopes to make it to the seventh someday. She hates to cook but loves to practice her cocktail-making skills. She also loves karaoke, which is unfortunate for anyone within range of her singing voice.

Nan and her wife live in New York City, where they struggle to balance their natural homebody tendencies with all the amazing things the city has to offer.

Hard to believe its a debut novel
This did not seem like a debut novel. The story was solid, the characters strong and the editing well done, all the things needed for an enjoyable read. Congratulations Nan Campbell, you hit a home run your first time up to the plate!

Oh wow. I thought I liked the first Nan Campbell book I read, No Kiss Contract, but The Rules of Forever just grabbed my heart and squeezed. It was so good, that I immediately wanted to go back and read it again.
Cara is an underappreciated NYC school teacher in the Bronx. She lives like a nun who took a vow of poverty because she has this quirky idea of not dying with student loans. Her step-by-step plan has her paying them off by her 35th birthday. Said plan does not include dating in any way. And then she goes to her 10th high school reunion and runs into her high school crush, Lauren.
Lauren carries around a heavily scarred heart from two previous disastrous relationships with women who only saw dollar signs when they looked at her. She decides to safeguard her heart. No relationships. When she sees Cara, though, she wonders if a no strings attached sexual encounter could really hurt. Romance ensues.
The number one thing I loved about this book was that as a New Yorker (born and raised in Queens), there were so many little things that many authors try to imitate, even people from upstate, that are just normally lacking or not correct. There were so many times that I was like "Campbell has got to live in the city", which I then confirmed by reading the author bio. (Although no one would take a cab from the Upper West Side to East 118th during rush hour. You'd never get there.) Second, the characters leap off the page. There was enough exposition and dialogue, both internal and external, that I got a real sense of who Cara and Lauren were and I liked them. I wanted to hang out with them. Third, the problems that both women have, Cara's rigid rules and Lauren's fears, did not make them unlikeable. There are so many times in romance novels when you wonder why exactly one is willing to take the other back after what caused them to break up. That's not what happens here and it takes realistic time for them to reconcile.
Go grab a copy and enjoy.

Relatable characters that you root for and a great setting in NYC. Sweet, funny, sexy all at the same time. A great addition to this growing genre! It was a quick read and I look forward to another book from this author!

This story had sharply differentiated characters, lively plotting and fun, humorous dialog. That's all I need.

Absolutely loved this book! I don’t normally read this genre, but am so glad I read this book. It was a page turner that was heartwarming and realistic. I really enjoyed the NY references and found the characters very layered. It renewed my hopes in romance and imparted on me the sound wisdom of not making too many rules in love (and life). Going to hop back on those dating apps after reading this book. Definitely recommend and kudos to the author in her debut novel.

Very much enjoyed this friends with benefits to lovers story. Great characters to cheer for.

Loved this debut novel! I usually like the slow burn, but the whole “let’s be friends with benefits and whoops! I’m falling for you” worked well. Lots of funny one-liners too, like really funny. And New York was the perfect backdrop. Looking forward to Nan’s next book. 5 Stars! Go Beavers!

I liked the characters, the setting and the premise. But I never experienced any real depth of feeling between the MCs. They were likeable and cute but their connection didn't resound with me.

Just finished reading this charming debut novel. Who doesn’t love a well-written romance that features a dose of nostalgia and a second chance at re-connecting with an unrequited crush?

Great romance with main characters having actual personal issues to overcome in order to get together, instead of some artificial misunderstanding-fueled drama at the 80% mark.

What a fantastic read. I couldn’t put this book down. I’m in a unique position of being able to understand the reticence of both our lead characters to get involved. So I was hooked and emotionally involved from the outset.
Clearly our author knows the areas and descriptions were fabulous but the characters were relatable, believable and you were rooting from them throughout.
The other amazing thing was the humour, giving real laugh out loud moments as well.
Ten out of ten would recommend and cannot wait for the authors second book due out April 11th.
