Cody takes something that has become unfortunately common (school shootings) and makes a brilliant premise (what if they got away?) out of it resulting in a truly gripping who done it. All of the characters are well fleshed out and feel like real people. Although Connor is clearly the main character and a believably complicated character at that, none of the other characters feel like background or after thought. Each story line is engaging and I never found myself wishing we could just get back to another character arc. The mystery progresses well and although I figured out part of it, the true scope of the mystery illuded me untill the end in a way that didn't feel cheap or forced. My favorite part comes down to Cody's writing style. He does endings differently for characters. He is realistic about the world and how life treats his characters in a way that a lesser author would shy away from. I look forward to his next book if this is what we get from the first.

The Morning Of provides us with an insider's perspective of the most horrendous yet all too common occurrence in today's society - the school shooting. Cody's oh-so-smooth, almost Stephen King-like writing style, sweeps us along so quickly we almost wonder if we read the book or dreamed it. Rich, fully developed characters teach us what it surely must be like to live through such a hideous criminal event from all perspectives. Teachers, administrators, students, police officers, community activists, as well as the people they love and live with, all quite naturally react differently but are impacted nonetheless. Do not miss out on this experience!

If I hadn't read the acknowledgements, I would never had guessed this was S.B. Cody's first published novel. From the moment I read the first page, I was hooked. He takes you on this journey with the residents of Stanford. The characters seem real to you. You immediately have feelings for these characters, good or bad. The suspense builds to the end, with you guessing who is responsible for the killings. The authors ties everything up in the end. You get closure on all the characters. I hope this author will be writing another novel

This book starts off so strong and keeps the pace going throughout the entire book. I read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down! The author threw in an exciting twist and I was excited to see everything fall into place. There are also a lot real world problems incorporated into the book that created a even more tense situation for this grief ridden town. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys mystery books.

I really enjoyed this book and finished it in two days! When I wasn't reading it I found myself thinking about the story and wanting to get back to it to see what was going to happen next. Good story line, suspenseful, and the characters were well developed and engaging. There was also a surprise twist at the end. Great book! Highly recommend!
