The Girl on the Edge of Summer (Micky Knight Mysteries Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

Micky Knight reluctantly takes on two cases, one for money, one for pity. The first is a trawl though archives to solve a century old murder for an arrogant grandson who thinks riches should absolve his family of any sins. The other, to answer a mother’s anguish as she tries to understand her daughter’s suicide. Micky sees no happy ending to either case; the dusty pages of history aren’t going to give up their secrets after holding them for so long. And even if she finds answers for the mother’s questions, nothing will bring her daughter back. But as Micky discovers, the past is never past and a young girl can lead a complicated, even dangerous, life. The secrets, both past and present, are meant to remain hidden—only the first murder is hard. The rest come easy.

Great job on this latest book in the series. Jean Redmann does it again. Micky is a mess but her vulnerability makes you like her even more.

I love JM's writing style, and hearing Mickey's thoughts. I don't think EDK's review is fair. Yes, Mickey is struggling, and I would have liked more interaction in her personal life. Still, I like how she tells the story. Without much attention to her personal life, it leaves JM plenty of material for upcoming books. I don't think Mickey is whiny--I think it is realistic to what goes on in most of our heads with every day stresses. Mickey drinks some, but nothing like she did in her younger days. Again, completely plausible, with her background and history. Please JM, don't keep us waiting too long with her friends/Cordellia!!

Michele “Micky” Knight is a Private Investigator who takes on two new cases. The mother of a teenage girl who committed suicide wants Micky to find the person who took a picture of her daughter with her top off and posted it in the internet.

The second case is one of murder, albeit a very old one. The client, Douglas Townson’s, great-grandfather was murdered and he wants Micky to put to rest the outrageous stories the family tells and find out what really happened. (Perhaps it was more a matter of arrogance on Mr. Townson’s part.)

As she goes about her investigations into her clients’ cases, she uncovers interesting details and nefarious doings. Then murders are committed, and things get dangerous.

This is a well written and plotted book. I truly enjoyed it. It was kind of refreshing going back and forth between cases – a different approach if you will. This is my first J.M. Redmann book, but I don’t believe it will be my last.

I want to thank Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books, Inc/Bold Strokes Books for forwarding to me a copy of this book to read.

I am a fan of all the books in the Micky Knight series. J M Redmann is a talented writer who knows how to tell a good story. She has given us characters whom I have come to care about. I trust in the author to take me on an interesting journey with them as they change and grow. She has not let me down. The Girl on the Edge of Summer is an engrossing and exciting mystery. It also adds to my understanding of Micky Knight and leaves me looking forward to her next adventure and the developments in her personal life.

Highly recommended new addition to the best lesbian noir detective series I have found. Flawed and struggling to pay her bills and make it through to another day, Mickey is so real you will expect to pass her at a poboy shop the next time you are in New Orleans.
Excellent story, if you are a fan you need this one. If not, what are you waiting for, go get started on the series!

I got to say wow what a great mystery, wasn't expecting the ending. I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's books. Mickey is Mickey, she is a great character. I recommend this book to my friends.

J. M. knows how to tell a tale and keep on spinning! The characters are beloved friends with all their quirks and secrets and insanity. I'd like to buy them all a drink and hang out. Mickey is deliciously flawed and real. I crave more from this fine author!

Glad to have the original Micky Knight back. Enjoyed this new addition to the series. Refreshing to encounter a protagonist that mirrors real life, i.e. our struggles, our joys, our regrets, our losses, our strivings. Character development very good - Micky continues to mature. The two cases - one present, one of the past - made for a compelling read. Well done. Hope there will be more.

Este es el noveno libro de la saga Micky Knight, y aunque ha ido perdiendo fuelle durante estos años (the shoal of time me dejó bastante desconcertada), me encanta.

El primer libro es "La sombra de la duda", en inglés, "Death by the riverside".

Oh, what a treat! I've been waiting AGES for this latest instalment in the Micky Knight series.
I have them all, have read and reread them more than once and have been champing at the bit for this new story to take me on the next part of Micky's less-than-smooth journey through life.
It's been a start-and-don't-put-it-down-until-the-end story, as I'm now used to with J.M. Redmann's books.
For anyone familiar with the series, it's a worthy new addition, though I have to admit I found the change in POV a bit jarring. I would have liked a little more about Micky herself and the familiar characters from previous stories - but then none of the books pander to the whims of the readers. They are unapologetic in their bare bones, with sometimes harrowing storylines and this new story is bang up to date on issues that concern many of us, youngsters and adults alike. Social media is powerful and dangerous and there are parts of this story I feel I want to keep and show to my granddaughters in a few years' time. It's a frightening world but sometimes it takes an adult to see the dangers.
This isn't a comfortable story. It's not meant to be. In some ways it's rather repetitive - at times it almost seems like a record of who ate/drank what and where, but even that makes some sense in the end. After seeming so settled a few books in, Micky has hit almost rock-bottom. Does it offer hope? Well, yes. There's always hope. Just as there's always another story to tell.
For now, my head is full of Micky Knight's latest escapades and the ways in which she copes (or doesn't) with her less than perfect life. This new story gives few clues as to what has brought Micky to her current state and for anyone who HASN'T read the preceding titles I suspect at times Micky herself may come across as a less than attractive character. For those who already know her there is all that knowledge of what makes her tick, how she shuts her mind to the pain of personal loss and her fumbled coping with each new day.
How will I last until the next instalment? Not happily. Definitely impatiently. Imagining all the different scenarios possible, yet knowing I have to wait for the next one to get any answers. AND...knowing it'll never be neatly laid out, there'll always be Micky and the demons she'll be fighting, throwing her life into disarray, her friendships and relationships into doubt.
I will say, to anyone who HASN'T read any Micky Knight books, STOP! Go to the very first one, Death by the Riverside, and begin there. Then, when you reach The Girl on the Edge of Summer you'll know Micky a little better and understand her a little more. She's travelled a rough road.
This story is another very worthy step in Micky's journey.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Reviewed in France on May 12, 2017
All Micky's supporting team is gone, along with the fun, tenderness, and passion that made the Micky saga so irresistible and human.
This is just another mystery books like many others. If Ms Redmann wanted to be viewed as a mystery writer, she succeeded. This being said am I still a fan of her books?
No. Though she did a great work in the first books, she gave me hope in I ll will, destroyed it is Shoal of time, and finally buried it in The Girl on the edge of Summer. So disappointing going down this way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Micky Knight at her best
