The First and Last Demon: A Sapphic Fantasy Romance Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 348 ratings

Meet Char: a once-renowned human warrior, trapped in an abandoned city with a demon who hates her. A demon who woke her from a fifty-year magical slumber specifically for the sake of tormenting her.

The demon’s name: Vesper. She and Char go a long, long way back. They used to be partners on the battlefield. National heroes. An unbeatable team bonded by magic. That bond was supposed to last for the rest of their lives.

Now Char’s memory is full of holes. The sealed city is full of hostile magical beasts. And Vesper, with her sharp teeth and unpredictable moods, is the most vicious of them all. As an ageless demon, she’s fully prepared to keep holding Char captive forever.

Char struggles to unravel the mystery of why they've ended up pitted against each other, locked in a private war that seems certain to end with one or both of them dead. Does Vesper’s senseless cruelty stem from simple demonic bloodlust? From years of suppressed loathing? What else could have driven her past the breaking point—compelled her to suddenly snap and betray her own bondmate?

To uncover the truth, Char will have to face her demon as she would any other deadly monster: as an enemy of humanity, the most formidable and vindictive foe she's ever encountered.

The First and Last Demon is a dark f/f enemies to lovers story with a heavy emphasis on the enmity—but an indelible slow-burning love at its core. Although it's set in the same contemporary fantasy world as the Clem & Wist series, this novel can be fully enjoyed as a standalone tale.

Hiyodori is not a bird. But she is dearly fond of her namesake, a plain-looking brown-gray bird that likes to perch near her Tokyo apartment and unleash the most incredible primal screams. Hiyodori (the human author) loves stories with fantastical settings and complicated, difficult-to-define relationships. All of her books—including Carrion Saints, her latest standalone novel—take place in the same shared fantasy universe.

A quick starter, I have never read any of this author's work before this book. I really had no idea what was going on. The author does an AMAZING job at painting a picture of the world and brings intense emotions to each and every scene, however I found this, sometimes to be a bit distracting. Though many of her descriptions were incredibly vivid, the actual events of the book, were often not heavily described, in that many of the actual interactions between characters or the world around them, were briefly mentioned, which while reading, did have me going back a few paragraphs to re-read a portion, because I either missed or misunderstood a key event and this happened a couple of times.

Not having any background about the world at large, the way the author explained and ran through many of the details was incredibly helpful and by the end of the book, I felt well versed in the lore of the land.

The one portion of this that I found disappointing, was that the book on the cover, claims to be a sapphic romance novel, and while I wouldn't claim that's entirely far from the truth, it falls firmly in the category of a fantasy adventure and love story, and less of a true romance novel. Though that was my initial reasons for being interested in the book, I was still very pleased with the overall story. Definitely worth the read.

I'm not kidding though, I'm not sure if these novels are just tailored to all of my deepest, truest, literary longings, or if it gets to everyone the way it does me.

Personally, I think when Hiyodori writes, it's straight up catnip. Because over the weekend, I'm telling you, I could do nothing productive until I finished reading this, and I stretched it out as long as I could. Of course.

    Anywho...

First and foremost this is a standalone but it's as deeply provocative and captivating as the others Hiyodori has written. The slow burn romance that goes beyond the boundaries of physicality into the very depths of who you are as an individual? Just as potent as Clem and Wist.

I did not see the twist coming. Not even a tad little bit.

But you know who did? ASA CLEMATIS. That's right. For a Hiyodori junkie like myself, there was enough Clem and Wist (MCs from the Lowest Healer books) to satisfy me and then some.
The time period takes place after The Reverse Healer Case files, BTW.

Cannot wait to read what Hiyodori puts out next. And if you like sapphic fantasy, especially if you like Anime, you should be reading this and waiting impatiently with me.

Side note to the author-I still desperately want to be a beta reader, if you happen to read this.

This was my entry into Hiyodori's books, and I loved it so much I immediately read the other three!

Although there is some violence, I didn't find it that bad, and I am pretty squeamish! Perhaps tender is not the right word for it, but I loved the connection I felt between the two main characters and I also loved Wist and Clem when they showed up!

All Hiyodori's books have fraught relationships and complicated pasts, and to me the action is always enmeshed with growth and understanding by the characters. The two MCs in this one learn about themselves and each other, with a couple big plot twists along the way.

This series is going to be one that I read through over and over. Loved it massively!

I am not exaggerating when I say this is probably (definitely) the most original, unconventional take on fantasy romance I’ve ever read.

The cover drew me in. (HELLO, just LOOK at it 🤩)

The tense mystery of the first chapter hooked me.

I stayed for the incredible world-building and the slow piecing together of what happened to Char, Vesper, and the abandoned, warped city they’re trapped in.

This is a really character-driven story about 2 people who have suffered terribly (truly, what we learn about their “service” is DARK) in their thousand-plus year role as Jace’s national defense. They’re pissed (Vesper - who is an excellent demon, by the way) and dissociating (Char). They’ve got issues and lots of them. And when Char wakes up, she only remembers fragments of their history, which makes their über slow build romance both appropriate and for a delicious use of hate-to-love.

I’m so impressed by compelling this story is given the minimal cast and setting: a clearly established fantasy world (that I’m eager to explore in Hiyodori’s other books) though the characters never leave the empty city; tension and crackling dialogue between Char and Vesper, who are the only 2 characters for a good chunk of the book.

    Ugh, it’s just so COOL!

The only reason I rated this one 4 stars instead of 4.5 (meaning I really liked it) is because, despite the big reveal, I felt that the end was somewhat unsatisfying, like all that built-up tension didn’t result in enough catharsis for me.

Moves a little slowly but it's so worth it. I did not see the end coming, which was very surprising. Highly recommend

The magic system is incredible and most importantly very unique. The characters are well written, funny, sarcastic, this one was a touch darker emotionally than the chem / weist books but very fulfilling, highly recommended!!!

I can't really say that much since I don't want to spoil anything. It's a book that almost shouldn't have worked and yet it really did, thanks to the author's talent. Fans of Hiyodori's other books should definitely give this one a try and anyone who wants to read "The First and Last Demon" should avoid any spoilers prior to reading the book because it makes the experience so much better.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Continuing the author's world-building

Although this is not another Clem and Wist book as such, I quickly became engrossed in Char and Ves's stories. The entire book takes place in a single location with just four characters involved, and yet the action flows unrelentingly. As with the author's previous books, there are many questions to begin with, and these are gradually answered as the story progresses. And the final reveal at the end - I never saw that coming, although, once it came, it made perfect sense. I look forward to the next book in this universe.

Quite a strange read but all the more enjoyable for it. The world building as well as the hints and memory fragments dropped throughout the book make it exceptionally creative. I've never read a book with this style of writing before.

Not my favourite Hiyodori book but the dialogue was as snappy as expected and the characters had just the right amount of snark.
