The Dust and the Roar

A forgotten era
A forever love
Their untold story.

Screw the rules.

Army veteran Richie Tallin returns to South Dakota from a disastrous war with nothing to gain and nothing to lose. With no real home, his family in shambles, his dad’s old motorcycle becomes the key to a new life as Wreck, the Road Captain of an outlaw motorcycle club. Now he’s living the life he’s always craved—freedom, good times, loyalty, no regrets, and, hell yes, no rules.

But when he finally gets a chance with Isi, a feisty girl he’s had his eye on for years, everything shifts. As fiercely independent as Wreck, Isi is determined to restart her life and keep her family’s business afloat while she hides a wounded past. She and Wreck light a fire in each other that’s unexpected and wild, and what begins as a casual fling becomes passionate and serious real fast.

Life is good.

But when a war of revenge, payback, and power breaks out, everyone gets caught in the crossfire. Choices are made. Sacrifices that can never be undone. In a crazy 80’s world of drug dealers, rock and rollers, and rival outlaws, Wreck and Isi are determined to hold on come what may.

And come it does.

Few know how the One-Eyed Jacks MC of Meager came to be. And fewer still, how the love of one woman changed the destiny of a small town in the Black Hills of South Dakota forever.

“The Dust and the Roar” is the origin story of the Lock & Key Series set in the late 1970s through the 1980s before the timeline of the series. This is a literary fiction love story of Isi and original MC member, Wreck, as well as the story of the founding of the club in Meager, South Dakota. It is a full length, complete novel and can be read as a standalone before or after the series.

From the beautiful dedication to the poignant epilogue, The Dust And The Roar enraptured my heart. Cat Porter brought her A-game to this prequel to the Lock & Key series and it's everything I could have asked for and so much more.

To me, it reads like a love letter to Porter's faithful. Those of us who are true Meager aficionados, who have been there from the very start, falling for Dig and his Grace and all of those who would follow through the hallowed halls of the One-Eyed Jacks clubhouse. There has always been a bit of a curiosity where Wreck Tallin was concerned. The pioneer of sorts who brought together the Jacks of Meager and made it the club it was always destined to be as their Road Captain and true soul of the group.

This book is not a romance per se. Yes, we get the passionate love between Wreck and his wildflower in Isi as bittersweet as that was. And it is glorious and full of longing and a tenderness neither had ever known. A true shining moment in both of their troubled lives. But what stands out for me most are the struggles Wreck must face and ultimate strength he gleans from being a part of a group of men he proudly calls his brothers. Past mistakes no longer need to matter and the loyalty he finds in this motley crew ultimately gives him the tools to find his last remaining family member in his baby brother, Miller.

With answers to the whys of how this sometimes ruthless group of men found their footing, it all comes full circle as Miller enters into the fold all the while knowing (from all the books before this one) his ultimate part in the future of the Jacks. It's almost poetic as Porter shows us the sweet in the friendships formed between Miller and the rest of the Jacks I have come to know and love. Getting glimpses of a young Dig and Boner and even Jump, made me all kinds of happy. To say I want to go back and re-read the entire series is an understatement. This prequel brought all the warmth and yes, even the heartache, back to me once more. The richness of Porter's words is undeniable and there is no way a reader wouldn't want to know more about these men and the lives they have led since Wreck showed them the way.

Knowing the ultimate outcome might deter some readers from getting the 'before' about an unsettled figure. But Porter carefully crafts a story that checks all the boxes and leaves us on a high that shows just how committed and protective she is of her characters. Like the eagles that caught Wreck's eye as both a young boy and as a hardened adult, his spirit will forever soar as the ultimate protector of all things One-Eyed Jacks.

Not to be missed, The Dust And The Roar is the masterful prequel that will have you clamoring for more. And lucky for you, there is a whole series to satisfy your palate.

5 magical stars!

I was interested in this ARC because it was set in South Dakota, which is where I live.
I was not prepared for the fantastic story that unfolded which spans decades.
Cat Porter is a story teller...this is not a romance per say..there’s romance but because the story calls for it.
The Dust and the Roar is a character driver MC book.
The characters are truly magnificent.
It was strange reading about war times that I was alive in and remembered..well.
70’s and the 80’s were both decades that were pivotal and controversial for us.
Wreck stole my heart. The blurb mentions Isi and credits her for changing a town and so many lives. While that’s true..I see her as the catalyst but it was Wreck that made a huge impact.
This is his story and I feel privileged to have read it.
Please give us more..I need Miller’s story.

The beginning was a bit slow, not much happens while they are just a group of like minded guys riding through the Badlands of South Dakota until they weren't and all bets were off. I loved reading how the One Eyed Jack's got their start, Wreck and Isi's story and young Miller before he came to be Grace's and a One Eyed Jack.

“...Here she was singing a song that was from a mans point of view...she hit the words in just a way to make a point. Her point. There was a dare in her voice and in that dare was a sexiness...She could handle whatever you dished out, and if she didn’t like it...oh, she’d let you know and leave you in the dust.”

THE DUST AND THE ROAR is a story of epic proportions; spanning years we follow the life of Wreck and Isi, and discover how those One-Eyed Jacks, who we all know and love, came to be. While essentially there is a love story entwined within the pages, Richie Tallin is undoubtedly the star of the show, and I quite honestly couldn’t get enough of him.
This is a prequel to the LOCK & KEY series and it does an incredible job of introducing us to all those characters who we have already fallen in love with...and if it was Cats’ mission to make me fall in love with them even more...well, she definitely succeeded.

“What we leave behind us counts...”

This book has me laid out flat on the floor with feels. I have cried, sighed, laughed, rubbed the chill bumps on my arms, and just experienced all the feels. I love these men. I love Meager SD. I love Wreck & ISI’s love with a fierce passion. They truly loved each other hard and well. It felt so good to be back in the Lock&Key world. Just seeing how each member of the One Eyed Jacks came to be, and just the brilliancy as to how Cat crafted them. I simply don’t have adequate words right now. I need to let these feelings set and marinate. My heart hurts so good right now, and I just want to FEEL. I know what I’ll be doing in a few days...starting the Lock&Key series again.

“My Isi was a dream I never knew I had until right then.”

Cat Porter is my go-to author for gritty, mature, sexy and exciting biker romance. Wreck’s book, while technically a prequel to the 'Lock & Key' Series, can be read on its own but is absolutely a must-read for anyone who has followed the series since the beginning.

This book begins with Wreck returning home from Vietnam. He is a lost soul, tormented by the war and by his fractured relationship with his mother. Wreck sees the world now through different eyes, and I can see how he would seek out others who share his background and beliefs.

“Color made no difference to me. Meeting all the men and women from all over who’d come to my dad for their bikes when I was a kid, and then fighting for survival on the other side of the planet, side by side with black, brown, yellow, and red—nothing but loyalty made sense to me. “Frowned upon” made no sense to me no more. Not a lick.”

This story ties the lives of Wreck, Miller and Grace together and I loved the return to Meager, South Dakota. I devoured this book in one sitting and loved the emotional roller-coaster of action and romance! Although this book does not have a traditional HEA as with most romance books, the ending and Epilogue is sure to leave every reader satisfied.

At the core of this book is the history of how the One Eyed Jacks MC arrived in Meager and how the brotherhood was formed. These men all later become the heart and soul of the 'Lock & Key' Series. And while Wreck’s relationship with Isi was not any sense a traditional one, it was intense, all-consuming and breathtaking. Theirs was a unique and beautiful love story.

If you have ever wanted more Cat Porter after reading the 'Lock & Key' Series, then you will devour Wreck’s story. The author has written yet another gorgeous book about life, family, loyalty, love, and the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood.

“Even if.”

"Even in the darkest of times, in despair and death, there's always a gleam of brotherhood to light your way. It's a promise, and it's also a warning to never fuck with that."

Damn, Cat Porter...you wrecked me with this one. I loved it so hard it's gonna be hard to move on, I can't get it out of my mind. That's confirmation it's a good book, right? It doesn't happen often and I treasure those times when it does.

I really enjoyed the transformation of Richie into Wreck. The pain and the passage of time, the lessons learned, the roads traveled, the love lost and gained. I got attached to the support characters and feel very strongly that the author has lots of good stuff to build on for future books. I really hope she does.

Isi is perfect for him. A light that can't be dimmed and hope for a better tomorrow. Her passion for life is inspiring and her passion for Wreck is more than he ever hoped for. She's as wild as the mustangs she adores and he doesn't want to tame her. She's exactly the way he wants her to stay...as long as she's his.

"Isi had made me poke my head of out of my cave and brought me out into her fresh sweet air."

The future they want is in danger of being snuffed out by the danger that surrounds them. Being Road Captain for the One-Eyed Jacks MC of Meager is what he was meant to do, but can he risk her safety with the war that's destined to break out? Will he have to choose? Is their love strong enough to withstand the dark cloud blowing in their direction?

This beauty deserves a special spot in my paperback collection. Every time I see the cover I'll feel an ache in my chest and a smile in my heart.

At the risk of inciting the wrath of fans of Cat Porter’s excellent Lock & Key series (of which I am one, btw), I did not want Wreck’s book. Don’t get me wrong, I love Wreck. It’s clear from the flashbacks, memories, and the way he is spoken of that he was loved, respected, and admired by his entire Jacks family. I felt like I knew him. I had a good sense of who he was as a person and the impact he had on the lives of so many around him, continuing long after his death. For me, that aura of mystery was so special. Throughout the series Ms. Porter reveals pieces of Wreck, each helping to fill in the picture of a man who influenced the lives of everyone around him, as well as the direction of the MC. Each little piece is like a little gold nugget I could add to my Wreck file. Maybe I’m weird, but that worked for me, in a big way. Having said all that, I loved this book. Wreck was all I believed him to be, and I enjoyed his journey from a young veteran returning home after serving as a medic in Vietnam to the wise elder of the MC he helped found and build. His and Isi’s love story is beautiful and tragic, and at times difficult to read because you know how it ends. His heartbreak is palpable, and as much as I hurt for him, the direction it takes him is what made this book for me. His relationships with his younger brother, Miller, Dig, and Boner were everything. Without Wreck, there is nothing. This entire series rests on the shoulders of this good, humble, loyal, caring man. And now I love him even more. So, thank you Cat Porter for writing this story I didn’t think I wanted or needed. Giving readers what they don’t know they want, need, or were missing, seems to be one of your greatest gifts. If you haven’t read this series yet, the first book Lock & Key is currently FREE, so it’s the perfect time to start.

Spectacular!! This story...wow, what an amazing trip through time in Meager. I'm forever grateful to a friend (Thanks Jo) who begged and pleaded with my Sister Queen to tell Wreck's story...these words needed to be written. The feel of this book for me is unlike others in the L&K saga, this is a deep rooted love story with some MC action thrown in for good measure ;-) Getting to experience the first days of the South Dakota One Eyed Jacks was surreal to say the least. Watching them grow and become forces to be reckoned with was pure satisfaction for this girl. I'm all team #DigForever, so getting to see glimpses of his and Boners early days as Jacks left me giddy and excited. I used to wonder about Wreck's past and had always hoped to learn more and I'm glad to have had this opportunity. These men are not simply MC brothers, their pre-MC lives are so unexpected that you cannot help but want to know more about them and those closest to them who managed to give their lives more meaning than they could have ever hoped for. Family is not always by blood, and these characters remind us of that each time we are blessed with a glimpse into their lives through Cat's magical words.
True, deep, and passionate is the best way to describe the love between Wreck and Isi. For me, theirs will go down as one of the greatest love stories ever written. Thank you Sister. Thank you for taking us back again and letting us relive the glory days with our favorite fellas.

What a thrill to be back in Meager, South Dakota!!! Feels like home. But, a different home this go round. We are in a much earlier time. Those early days just before Lock and Key with it's own unique perspective.

Wreck Tallin. I have been intrigued by this character from the Lock and Key series. There was a silent strength to him. While he did not possess the role of Prez of the One-Eyed Jacks, he was well respected by his loyal brothers just the same. He had a story. I needed that story. And a fantastic telling of his story is exactly what Cat Porter gives us. We experience every rich detail of Wreck's life. His close relationship with his father, the Vietnam War with his buddy, and of course the events that led to the formation of the Jacks. And most importantly, the mystery woman, Isadora. Their love is like no other. A love of a lifetime, no boundaries, no expectations. They loved hard, fierce and freely.

What was especially exciting is the manner in which events of the early days are connected to people or events of the Lock and Key series. Outstanding! Cat Porter is a master storyteller. I am always amazed at the depth of her stories and the ability to transport the reader to a time and place. It's as if you experience what the character experiences. It is a true gift!

This certainly can be read as a standalone novel. For those that have not read the Lock and Key series, do yourself a favor and put that on your TBR list!!

5+++++ very happy and thankful stars!!

Where do I begin with this incredible story?

The Dust and the Roar has everything....
It's a slow burn with depth and detail, it's action and emotion and is full of heart. It is darkness and light, a story of struggles, soul touching passionate love and heart breaking tragedy. It's history, of Meager and The One Eyed Jacks and the strength and loyalty of their brotherhood. I loved how we saw glimpses of some of our most beloved characters in their earlier days and how Wreck especially shaped the men they would become.

TDATR can absolutely be read as a standalone. If it's your first Cat Porter book, prepare to be blown away by her epic storytelling. I can't imagine you won't want to go on and read the stories of the likes of Miller, Dig and Boner. If you are already a fan, this book will engage you in the full range of emotions and give you backstories and information you probably didnt realise you needed so badly!!

"When I least expect it, I will be expecting you. That’s the way this life has treated us, hasn’t it?"

Wreck and Isadora have touched my heart and left their mark. Eagle and Mustang, their roar set the pages alight and their will to be free to live their life their way will stay with me for a long time. 5 huge, highly recommended, absolutely loved it stars.

Wow this book was EVERYTHING!!!!
I didn't want it to end!!
You'll laugh, cry, have your heart broken multiple times..
Gah, I'm speechless. It's been so good being in the author's MC world that she has created. I knew I had missed it, but I didn't realise how much.
There are so many layers to this story their depth will leave you gasping for breath.
Wish I could give this masterpiece more stars.

When I finished this book I had no words, I was a wreck over Wreck. What an epic love story. What a storyteller Cat Porter is. All the feels experienced in this book.
It's one of those reviews were I honestly don't know where to start, don't know what to say other than this was a beautiful journey and I felt every high and low with these characters.

A biker named Wreck who is an ex veteran and a woman named Isi (Isadora) who feels the freedom in singing, together they give each other wings, freedom to follow their dreams while also living the dream with each other.

"When it’s my time to start singing, when the notes rise and I’m about to jump in, that moment—suddenly everything—and I mean everything—fits into place, and it’s a place I’m addicted to. Big, pure, full of every color—colors I don’t even know exist and don’t have words to describe. It’s intense and scary, but it’s where everything is true. When I sing, I’m the me I was meant to be, I’m the me I’ve been reaching for so long. You were so right. I wouldn’t be feeling all this, wouldn’t be right here if it wasn’t for you.” - Isi

This is a love story like no other I have read, an ending like no other I have read. Not all love stories have a happy ending, did THE DUST AND THE ROAR have a happy ending?, well, it depends on how you view it, I thought it did but I still had sadness in my heart.

You are taken on a journey from the 70's when Isi and Wreck first meet, to how Isi begins her singing career and begins to go on tour, how Wreck starts up his Club and along with his brothers they become the One-Eyed Jacks MC of Meager in a small town in the Black Hills of South Dakota. With over 60 chapters this is one chunk of a book but honestly, I could have read on, I was completely lost in this story.

I don't want to add spoilers but I do want to say read it and enjoy the journey, the laughter, the heartache, the development in the plot, the storytelling and beautiful words of cat porter, you need to read this book and I say that very few times.

This is the back story of Wreck. It can be read before or after the series. I found it after the series. If you're like me and have read the series you probably had a few questions about Wreck. There wasn't much back ground about him but here is his story and it's a good one!!
Wreck did once have an old lady and boy did they love each other whole hearty. She has a great singing voice and he was the one who pushed her to go after her dream of singing and she did.
Did you know the town once had someone else who had claimed it as his own? Had the police in his pocket as well. A very evil hateful man who was after her brother. Now if you read the series you know in it he didn't have a woman. What happened to her? You'll have to read to find out.
We also learn how the club came to be and how they own the old go cart track. How Dig and Boner came to be. So, so much more than you think you know.
It's well worth a read and as always it's for adults only and I highly recommend it

I was so excited and patiently waiting for Wrecks book. I cannot say enough of Cat Porter’s writing style.

I don’t know where to start with this review. We met Wreck first in the Lock and Key series and fell in love with him through Grace, Miller and Dig. I was so anxious to meet him though his words. My heart and emotions were so invested in him, I devoured every word, every emotion, turning page after page.

The story begins when Wreck returns home from Vietnam and you feel the turmoil in his heart, he lost his dad, had no relationship with his mom to speak of and he is trying to find where he fits and what he wants out of his life. He almost takes a job at the same gravel factory his father worked at. As he once said to Isi,

“There’s more to life than that, I want that more. I knew it’d kill me, Is. That dust he came home with every day, I didn’t want it on me. Dust from the road, though – hell, yeah. That’s where I live and breathe”

Meeting men who would become his brothers gave him purpose and direction. He knew he wanted to be free and nothing was more free than being on his bike. I loved reading how the One Eyed Jacks came to Meager and became the brotherhood we fell in love with in the Lock and Key Series.
Wreck meets Isi and they had this instant connection. I loved her and how their loved changed their lives. Their love story wasn’t perfect but it was real and took me on a beautiful journey.

This story reminds you that life is not just about the quantity of time you live, it’s about the quality of the life you live and the legacy that you build and leave with the people whose lives you touch.

THIS BOOK has to be my new favorite from Cat Porter!! I’ve gotten to where I purposely avoid any sneak-peeks or any blurbs about up and coming books from authors that are automatically one-clicks purchases for me. Why? Well, they are my one-clicks so I’m getting it regardless, that’s just how much I trust in their ability to write. And I enjoy their books more going into them with no preconceived ideas of what to expect. And this book surprised the heck out of me when the main character’s name showed up “Wreck”, I was thrown for a loop. Wreck was a very important side character in Mrs. Porter’s Lock and Key series that intrigued me to no end. And NO you don’t have to have read that Series first because this is a stand-alone. This storyline predates the storyline of L&K. It gives you..... the beginning, the start, the prequel!!!! *can you tell how much this excited me?* It's the start of an MC, a town that was almost forgotten, and Wreck’s relationships. I do guarantee you will so want to read the L&K Series after if you haven't already, or even if you have, and I highly recommend it!

Wreck and Isi’s story is such a whirlwind of emotions... With its angst, pull at your heartstrings, and the depth of happiness...
Yet this story is more than just their love story.
It's Wreck’s story.... of his passion for the relationships that meant the world to him.
It's his story told only as Cat Porter can.
And for me, it was an amazing ride.

I also have to admit what made Wreck’s story, this book, come to life for me was the pull of emotions that this amazing author did to me by reliving an era I’d long forgotten. Capturing the freedoms that the youth craved along with their mistrust of the government. Along with the music and artist of that era. As well as the movies and TV shows..... so many memories and feelings....even now it overwhelms me causing my eyes to water as I write this.
Thank you, Mrs. Porter, for Wreck and Isi’s beautiful story but more importantly bringing Wreck’s story to life!

The Dust And The Roar is about a man named Rich aka Wreck. He is a beloved character mentioned throughout the Lock & Key series, he's also Miller's older brother. You can read more about Miller in Lock & Key. This can be read as a stand-alone however the Lock & Key series will give you a more in-depth knowledge of Wreck's impact on the people around him.
Wreck's story is one of discovering where he belongs and finding a place to call home. Sometimes home is with a person, not a place. He finds that with Isadora aka Isi. The chemistry between them ignites like wildfire and their love is so strong and well written that I could feel it. I've said it once and I'll say it again, this author writes emotion with such depth that it can be felt by the reader. It's an amazing gift.
Wreck is a wonderful man, loyal, loving, steadfast, and true. He is the foundation of strength his brothers and loved ones stand on and rely on. The epilogue had me sobbing it touched me greatly. The Dust And The Roar is a fantastic book.

I read an arc and willingly posted my review.

WRECK!!! This is the story of how it all began... Wreck & Isi’s love story was epic and this whole cast of characters is just fantastic!! Isi was an incredible heroine and their love story was everything!! I LOVE stories that take place over a long period of time and this one hit the spot for me.

I love Cat Porter’s MC books and I couldn’t wait for this book. It’s a complete standalone and actually takes place before the Lock & Key series. So you can start here or come back after reading the series to see how it all started. How friendships were formed, how loves were found and lost, how relationships began. I highly recommend this and everything she writes!

The Dust and the Roar

Every time I begin a Cat Porter book I know I’ll be transported to another place. I know the experience will be unique and will touch me deeply. Cat has a way of bringing her characters to life like no other. I feel I know these people and I’m living and dying right there with them.

Wreck broke my heart but I knew he would. If you’ve read the Lock & Key Series you go in knowing this will be a sad story and it is....but it’s so much more. The love between two people who choose to live life in the now. Wreck wasn’t planning on loving anyone and Isadora had to much heart break already she wasn’t willing to leave herself open to more. The pull between them was too strong and they found that perfect love everyone searches for. Club life family responsibilities ghosts from the past all try to separate them but, their love is a lasting love.

Somehow Cat manages to leave us with a hope that these two will find each other again.

I’ve been missing Meager and all the gang and it was wonderful to see how it all began. I can never get enough of Dig, Boner, Miller, and Wreck. Another 5 star read!!

It's been 2 years and I'm still not over Finger. I suspect Wreck and Isi is going to be in My heart and mind for a long time as well.
That being said I won't sugar coat this. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of this book and more than once I wasn't sure if I could continue their story.
I was nervous and anxious but I knew I had to read Wrecks story and how these men became brothers.
Isi and Wreck were perfect for each other. They held out for love throughout.

It also gave the readers the backstory of how One Eyed Jack's were formed, a young Dig, Boner and Miller.

As with most of Cat's books I was crying for the love and loss of these characters.

I was provided a copy of this book for a honest review.

This was a big book with a lot of story. It took me awhile to get into it I will admit. It encompasses several decades and tells the life story of Richie AKA Wreck. It starts in the 70’s and travels on till what I’m guessing is the late 80’s early 90’s. It’s an MC with violence and death and amazingly a love that will last a lifetime.

Richie is home from Vietnam. His life isn’t the same as when he left. His home he shared with his dad is quieter now since his death. He just feels stagnant and needs a reason to belong in this dingy trailer in this dead end town. His one true passion is his motorcycle and the open road and that is where he establishes his MC. It’s mainly a group of guys who ride more a pleasure club than anything at first. He first meets Isadora at a bar where she sang a few songs. He was enamored by her despite never believing in love. They dance around each other for a few years before she finally makes a move. Their love becomes one for the ages. Sadly around this time rival MCs are stirring up trouble and they decide to join another MC to stake their claim on Meager. It’s not without tragedy and strife and fighting for territory. It’s brutal and ugly but this is Wrecks life and he wants to keep Isadora safe from it all. Yet there is someone from his past he has never considered until now.

Ok I will admit this might have been too much book for me. It’s a lot of story with a lot of little plot bunnies happening in it. Like story inception if you will. Lets make a club then somehow drugs popped up and then Isadora then tragedy then Miller. My head was spinning. It was reminiscent of a series I read once that I adored but they are not the same. The Dust and The Roar was very good some epic storytelling so kudos to Cat Porter for that. She covered almost all of Wrecks life in those chapters. I could relate to Miller because my grandmother is also part Native and part white and it was really a struggle in those days. I was glad I got to read this story and I think if you were alive during the 70’s and 80’s you might really connect to this story.

The Dusk and The Roar was a great story. I loved the premise of this book and I like Wreck right from the start. He's a gentleman in every sense of the word. That's why I'm so happy for him when he met Isadora. A fierce, loving and independent woman. They compliment each other and what affections they were! Blazing hot! Everything seems perfect until the thing happened and I just can't believe it. I cried over that scene... a lot. The emotion had me bursting at the seams. I felt like the characters were so well-written like I really knew them. I enjoyed everything about this book. Cat Porter never disappoints to deliver a great MC story. Highly recommended!

I have had this series on my TBR for what seems like forever. However, when I saw that this was a prequel of sorts that showed the backstory of the series and how it came to be, I took that as a sign to finally start reading. I was not prepared. Seriously, I was not prepared. This book reads like poetry in parts. I connected with it. I am not sure if it is because I know what Rez life is like and the treatment of Native Americans since it is the way of life for many of my family. Maybe, it is because I am a product of the '80s and understand how times were during this decade. And maybe, just maybe, it is also because these characters and this story were truly riveting.

Wreck and Isi, sweet lord. This couple. Even though this is a romance between these characters, it is something so much more. It is a chance to discover things about themselves and find redemption and purpose. I can definitely see that waiting worked in my favor because having heard people rave about this series, I get the story from beginning to end.

I cannot thank the author enough for also putting in the statistics and history at the end of the book. It is painful to read, yet, I feel that it needs to be talked about more and not just brushed off. Whether it is popular or not, it is a part of history, one that there should be remorse so that it can be learned from and not repeated. Bravo to the author on this book.

Like every book I’ve read by Cat Porter, this one is unnecessarily looooooooong, inundated with excessive fluff and filler. Although this book was apparently edited by two different people, they obviously were not able to hone down the wording. There also missed a lot of typos. Most distracting was when Porter accidentally called a female character named Josie, “Jose” multiple times! This book definitely needs a thorough proofreading as there were things like missing quotation marks at the beginning of dialogue, too.

On the positive side, I’ve never read a book that talked about how a MC was created/formed - definitely different and for me, fascinating! I was also impressed by how many genres this book contains. Although there are a few, quick scenes that some might consider to be “dark”, the majority of this book is far from dark. I assume that most readers would classify this book as a moving, gripping, tearjerker coupled with some spicy hot sex!

The Dust and the Roar by Cat Porter will leave you breathless with each page you read as you get an in depth look into the onset of the One Eyed Jacks start in Meager, South Dakota during the 70's-80's. This story was emotional and gut wrenching as you follow Wreck aka Ritchie' s return from war. With no plans for the future in this small town, his family gone he finds himself at a crossroads, until Wreck happens upon a group of outlaw bikers that gave him the one thing he desires the most; freedom to ride, no rules, loyalty and a strong bond between these bikers which gave him a family again. When Wreck happens to meet Isi, a strong feisty beautiful girl with strong ties to Meager their love story spans years as these two who are both independent, warmhearted individuals bring out the best in each other as the love between them will outlast the ages. Their relationship was filled with so much chemistry and passion and the storyline was well thought out and heart-rending at the same time. But now rival outlaws, drug wars and revenge will change everyone's life due to the sacrifices and choices each will have to make to save the people they love. Through all of the heartbreak and loss you will fall in love with each one of these characters as you get a better understanding of the start of the One Eyed Jacks all due to Wreck's determination and the love of one woman whose impact left her mark on this small town . Thank you Cat for taking us on this emotional ride into the world of the One Eyed Jacks and the story of Wreck your readers will be blown away with this one. I voluntairly reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

If you've read the Lock and Key series then you know about Wreck. The Dust and the Roar brings us back to the beginning and tells us the story about Wreck and the beginning of the One Eyed Jacks. It was such an amazing read and I just couldn't get enough. I loved Wreck and Isi, their love was everything. I loved seeing a young Dig, Boner and Miller. Loved them! This book and the Lock and Key series is a definite must read!
