The Best Mistake Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 285 ratings

A chance weekend fling becomes an electrifying escape for two strangers—until they meet again under very different circumstances. A one-night-to-forever lesbian romance.

Uptight, icy Ava Harris, rocked by grief and terrible romantic decisions, moves to Melbourne for a new university job. She definitely doesn’t expect to encounter the ghost of a dirty weekend in her first week there.

Kind, charismatic Sofia Juma, who runs a campus tutoring program for migrant students, barely recognises Ava as the charmer she met months ago, given the woman’s frosty brush-offs.

When the universe keeps hurling them together, and that old attraction flares again, Ava keeps giving in to Sofia’s charms. Sex is easy, but intimacy takes courage. While Sofia is brave, a wounded Ava is still running scared. If she ever catches up, will it be too late?

A second chances romance about healing old wounds and learning that independence doesn’t have to mean being alone.

Thirteen-year-old Emily woke up one morning with a sudden itch to write her first novel. All day, she sat through her classes, feverishly scribbling away (her silence probably a cherished respite for her teachers). By the time the last bell rang, she had penned fifteen handwritten pages of angsty drivel, replete with blood-red sunsets, moody saxophone music playing somewhere far off in the night, and abandoned whiskey bottles rolling across tables. Needless to say, that singular literary accomplishment is buried in a box somewhere, ready for her later amusement.

From Melbourne, Australia, Emily was recently granted her PhD. She works part-time in academia, where she hates marking papers but loves working with her students. She also loves where she lives, but travels as much as possible, and tends to harbour crushes on cities more than on people.

Two strangers met in a bar and have a one night stand that lasts two nights and two days. Meeting again more than a year later Ava says it was a mistake. Learning to trust and love and respect each other is an emotional and exhausting process. Good book.

This is the first book I've read by Emily O'Beirne. It was well done. Had excellent chemistry. The growth of characters was well done. Although angsty, it was understandable. I will look forward to more books by this author.

Really great story.
Throughly enjoyed the twist and turns.
I typically avoid books that have emotional underlying stories since I need more happiness in ny life. I let the tears roll and kept reading.

A deeply introspective slowly developing love affair. Genuine characters and lovely interactions not without a bit of angst. Very much enjoyed this engrossing read.

Lovely book. I always enjoy books set in Australia. Not quite a second chance, more like a continued first chance. Sophia and Ava had a two night stand. Neither of them forgot it. They meet again 8 months later and both are shocked. Loved how they side stepped their first meeting. A lot of emotions in these pages. Ava, especially, had a sad past that had changed her outlook on life. Sophia was a small woman who wanted to make a big impact. She also had a past that she was in the process of overcoming. Love can't be denied. The side characters really helped make the story. Was very pleased with this one.

I’m not sure how to describe it I feel like there’s was a lot of information we learned about the character but nothing was really explored to me idk like in depths a whole lot of information that kind of leads nowhere but it was a good read could’ve been better tho

This is the first book I have read by this author and I am impressed! Very, very believable characters who totally bring you into their worlds. You feel the broken, spiky bits and the unbridled passion and the fear of loneliness. You understand their heavy obligations and feel their hopes. And you really, really root for the two characters to make their way out of their past mistakes and find in each other what they really need. The world they inhabit has its own character, too - the geographic bubble in which they go about their daily routines comes alive but you don't lose sight of the fact that they are just a smaller part of the larger city of Melbourne. Sometimes with a book that takes place in a large city, it becomes overwhelming as the characters go hither and yon for activities all across the city - but in this book, it feels more real. Most city people tend to inhabit a small portion of the city where they are familiar - the local cafes and bars, where they shop, etc. and these characters are no different. The side characters each have individual personalities and are important to the overall arc of the story but at no point do you feel overwhelmed by either the number of side characters, nor their involvement in the main couple. They are just normal co-workers, friends, and family - but each unique. The sex scenes were not as detailed as I typically prefer, but that's ok. The story makes up for that - some books I read for the steam, some for the storyline. This book falls firmly into the latter category. Well done all around. Minor grammatical errors but I assume these will be edited in the final version.

TL:DR: Believable characters, strong story, well done. 4.5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely take on a second chance romance

There’s so much to love about this book from
Emily O’Beirne.

Usually the absolute queen of YA Australian sapphic stories, this is a fine contribution to the world of adult sapphic romance.

There are so many genuinely laugh out loud moments and the dialogue between the love interests is wonderful - with special mention to the ensemble cast of excellent characters representing the perfection of multicultural Australia.

The book is a bit of a slow burn to start after a quite dramatic kick off as the characters find their footing - which makes sense as we get to unravel two beautiful and complex women who thankfully have a number of solid cracks at what could be.

Also worth saying that O’Beirne lyrically captures the deep insistence and persistence of attraction between two women - playfully and with the type of chemistry where the world disappears.

I enjoyed the story, kind of one night stand to forever in a round about way. But after finishing it, I feel something was missing. I’m normally all over books like this but it seemed lacking in a way. Didn’t grab me as I expected, the characters, although likeable once you finally got to understand them, just didn’t seem whole enough? Maybe that’s what was lacking, I’m still not sure.
Like I said, the story was good. The change and growth was nicely paced. It’s a little sad, a bit funny in places but also frustrating. I’m sure I’ll figure out what was missing at some point. I don’t regret reading it or anything. I’m sure other people will love it.
Also, it really needs another look over by an editor or at least the author to get rid of grammar mistakes and missed words. I think that added to my overall feeling. I expect better from this publisher I guess.

"Get ready to feel all the feels with Emily O'Beirne's 'The Best Mistake'! This book dives deep into the messiness of grief, showing that healing isn't a race—it's a journey unique to each person. Set in the gorgeous backdrop of Australia, this isn't your typical love story. It's about two wonderfully different LGBTQ+ characters whose one-night stand turns into an unexpected, heartwarming romance. O'Beirne's writing brings raw emotion and authenticity to every page, making this a must-read for anyone who loves stories of love, loss, and finding hope in unexpected places."

Engaging was the word describing my feelings as I read this book. The characters, carrying their baggage, were likeable and the plot was interesting. I was drawn in by…well-written, believable, emotive, and the nicely-paced happily-ever-after.
