Product Description
Swanson Tool Company has combined our two top-selling speed squares as a value-packed, two-item kit. Both the Speed Square and the Big 12 Speed Square are innovative tools with incredible versatility since you can use them in place of a number of other tools: 1. Try Square, 2. Miter Square, 3. Saw Guide, 4. Line Scriber, 5. Protractor. The Big 12 Speed Square can also serve as an Out-of-Square Corner Angle Finder and Stair Layout Square. The Big 12 Speed Square is a 12-inch version of the Swanson Speed Square with added features for building stairs. Both Speed Squares are die-cast for durability and accuracy. Made of heavy-gauge aerospace aluminum alloy, they are built to last years on the job site. Black-filled gradations stand out against a matte finish for easy reading and are simple to use with the Swanson One-Number Method of rafter layout. The Swanson Speed Square is our most popular product and remains the most trusted square of its kind. Look for the Diamond cutout for genuine Swanson products.

Swanson's Patented Diamond CutoutOur Diamond Cutout is an exceptional feature. When you need to square your scribed line, the Diamond Cutout lets you see - and align - your scribed line. Now you can make a 90° line off your scribed angled to the edge of the board, knowing it's spot on and accurate. (not featured on the Big 12, model S0107) |
Swanson's Pivot PointUse the pivot point to turn your Speed Square into a protractor. Mark the pivot point on your board, and then move (pivot) the square to the degree of the cut you're looking to make. Mark the angle and you’re ready to cut. This is especially handy for stair stringers, and the pitch of roof rafters. |
Swanson's FenceEverybody loves to use a Speed Square for its Try square convenience, and the sturdy fence that makes up the base of our speed squares ensures that you'll be able to snug any of these squares against your board and make the most accurate and reliable scribe lines you need for your cuts. Scribe 90-degree and 45-degree lines with confidence! |
Swanson's Scribe BarIt's not always easy or convenient to scribe a rip or trim line along a board - unless you have a speed square! Featured here are the 7" Speed Square S0101 with notches every 1/4 inch, and the 8" T0118 which has notches every 1/8 inch. Set your carpenter pencil into the notch that matches what you're looking to rip or trim and run the fence along the edge of your board. |
Always rugged, and turly built to last.

Please note: the Blue Book ships with the aluminum Speed Square value pack (model # SW1201K) only.

As for the combination square, I don't know if mine came true or not. I assumed it was for several months before checking. By that time, it was off a little so I quickly tried to true it up. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there - but one note of caution: DO NOT FILE DOWN THE REST TABS WITH COMBO RULER like one of the youtubers suggests. Sure it's a steel ruler, but you could round off the edges in the process. Don't ask how I know. Anyway, I was in a rush so I got it close enough. More recently (January 2023), I've had time to actually sit down, take my time and get it perfectly square, using the parallel line test. The whole process took maybe 20 minutes at most and all I used was small strips of rolled up 150 grit and 400 grit sandpaper. As I got closer to perfection I scraped less and less and checked more frequently. Again, no more than 20-30 minutes and now I have a perfectly square piece of equipment. My ruler is straight and the markings are clear so I can use it for relative measurements. But I mostly use it to draw or cut 90 degrees, so I wouldn't care if it was a rhombus parallelogram or whatever else for my purposes. I am not marking it down because I had to true it up - unless you are willing to spend way way way more for a combination square, they all eventually will need to be adjusted. I'm just super glad that I can actually true it up if/when I need to and get it as close to perfection as my eyes can see so easily. If yours doesn't come perfectly square - take 20 minutes to learn how to do it, you will have to at some point anyway.
The speed square has a clean seam joint which allows it to sit right even against sharper edged project boards; lays flat and does not rock. I used it immediately on a small woodworking project to draw angled lines for jigsaw cuts and also as a quick guide edge for one square crosscut with my cordless circular saw.
The small combination square was the perfect size to locate and mark screw holes which only needed to be in 1-5/8" from one edge and down 3/4" from the top edge. It was easier than my larger combo square to hold in place while marking.
The two piece package is a great value. The price for both squares was less than the regular price of just the speed square at local retail stores. The booklet (also in store packages) is a nice addition to ensure awareness of various usage features and the markings on the speed square, and to provide some useful info for carpentry.
Very pleased that I took the chance on this package deal. These are sure to be used frequently in my home workshop and will go with me in my tool bag for use away from home too.
