Trouble lurks in the Lowcountry of South Carolina in the guise of a family feud, forbidden love, and a journalist hell-bent on uncovering corruption.

Meet Zingle Caddell, who doesn't regret the destruction left in his wake so much as he is annoyed by it. Figuring no man can continue to have such bad luck, Zingle is waiting for his fortunes to improve. He knows what he likes--alcohol, women, and family, in about that order--and he'll continue on with them as before.

That is, until he's surprised by a violent encounter with his match, Jessie Bell, when her stepdaughter doesn't come home as expected.

Bad blood is rampant between the Bells and the Caddells by the time Jessie's daughter and Zingle's nephew unwittingly fall in love. Forbidden to see one another, the couple must decide how much they're willing to risk. Is it worth being ostracized from their families? Destitution? Their very lives?

"An unforgettable and deeply satisfying drama with thrills... Its eye-opening essence [is] the concept of living true to oneself without apprehension. where the discovery of what one is capable of happens for fearless and truthful individuals." -
Reader Views, 5-star review

"A twentieth-century spin on a Romeo-and-Juliet-style story that explores love, family, passion, and disagreement in a way that will draw readers in and make them unable to stop reading until the very end...
Homespun by Sophia Alexander is a well-researched and beautifully written character-driven novel. Readers will find Alexander's writing enchanting and her characters will pull emotions from the readers through the whole novel." -The Historical Fiction Company, 5-star review

From the Author

Jack gazed out over the water. "My grandmother—we call her Mæ—brought us out here once to show us where there used to be Indian mounds at the edge of the lake. This land would be flat like everywhere else in these parts but for the mounds make it sorta hilly. See it? The WeeTee used to live around the mounds, right near the water's edge. It was all very sacred."

"To the heathen Injuns," Annie finished for him.

"Well, that has to do with why I brought y'all here. Truth be told... I s'pose the real reason your daddy don't want you to date me is cuz I'm part Injun."

"I been datin' a colored?" Ginny asked in a faint voice, leaning against a cypress tree.

"Not really," he protested. "I'm Scotch-Irish, nearly all white. Mæ's only part Injun herself. We don't talk about it, don't even think about it much... but I gotta be honest. Mæ even knows some o' the old chants and... and such."

Ginny winced, burying her face in her arms.

"Oh, come on, Ginny," Annie protested. "You might be part-Injun, too, fer all we know. Here you are actin' so upset at him, but I bet you ain't even told Jack that you might be adopted."

Shocked, Ginny turned to stare at Annie. "I ain't adopted."

"Mmm. But you got that frizzy hair, Ginny. So maybe you ain't part Injun. Maybe you're really part Negro."

"How dare you!" Red-faced, Ginny launched herself at Annie, tackling her to the ground.

With some difficulty, Jack pulled her off, prying apart fists full of Annie's hair. Wrapping his arms around Ginny, he held her to him tightly. She was shaking like an aspen leaf. "Ginny, it wouldn't matter. It wouldn't matter to me one bit."

Homespun, the engaging final chapter of Sophia Alexander's Silk Trilogy, is an absolute pleasure to read. Providing a deeply satisfying conclusion to this much-loved historical fiction series, it brilliantly caters to fans of Silk and Tapestry. Like its predecessors, Homespun is steeped in emotional depth and masterful storytelling, exploring the intricacies of familial bonds, passionate romance, and the pursuit of self-actualization. Readers already invested in the first two installments will not be disappointed, and those who have yet to embark on this captivating journey can now enjoy binge-reading the entire series. Highly recommend!

Homespun had me enthralled and fixed to its pages until the twisted end. I have relished reading each book from the Silk Trilogy but I was stunned to witness my reponse to the character I had grown to hate and despise the most during these sagas. Through her masterful and cunning writing, Sophia Alexander made me fall in love a little with a psychopath. I closed the book in complete awe of how quickly my abhorrence was transmuted into appreciation for such evil through yet another spellbinding Lowcountry tale. Historical Southern fiction at its best!

I just finished "Homespun" the third book of the Silk Trilogy by Sophie Alexander. This story follows in the footsteps of the first two award winners.
There has been bitter dissension between the Caddell and Bell families for years with Zingle Caddell being the most menacing. His character had many facets.
The Bell sisters, Vivian and Gaynelle, as well as young Ginny grew up under sometimes, heartwrenching situations.
Vivian eventually became an ambitious journalist who was determined to publicize many hidden political crimes, which she risked her life for.
The Sisters secret was finally revealed and Jessie, who had kept a low profile in this story, showed her true self with a BANG.

Homespun is the conclusion to the Silk Trilogy. It once again brings to life our favorite ( and most despised) characters while introducing us to a another generation of the Bell family.
While this installment introduces a character that is potentially even more disliked than Jessie, it also brings us his complete opposite, who also happens to be his nephew. I never thought I would dislike a character more than Jessie, but Zingle proved me wrong! It's amazing how much evil can reside in one family member, while there is so much good and honesty in others.
I enjoyed this latest and final installment. It did not include the retribution I felt Jessie should have, but she still ended up paying somewhat for her actions through her own self inflicted mental torment. It wasn't the justice I hoped for, but she didn't get off Scott free either.
The other characters in the book are a mix of lovable, gullible, flawed, and endearing.
One of the things I can say about this series is that the story and characters have stayed with me. So many times I have forgotten characters and storylines after reading a book, but this series and these characters have a way of creeping into your thoughts long after you have closed the pages.

Homespun Spins a Mighty Tale

If you’re a fan of William Faulkner, Harper Lee, or Erkskine Caldwell, you will love this intense dive into the underbelly of the Deep South: Homespun, Book Three of the Silk Trilogy, by Sophia Alexander.

Fraught with the elements we’ve come to expect in Alexander’s books - poverty, classism, corruption, women’s issues, a grotesque character thrown in here and there, and even violence including murder or rape, – this novel tells a Southern Gothic, generational story of interrelated families from the early 20th Century forward. Balanced by Alexander’s eternal optimism, Homespun also spins a tale whose characters exemplify the triumph of the human spirit through their perseverance, dignity, and love.

Divided into brief chapters and coming in at about 260 pages, Homespun makes a great beach read for the summer or for reading on chilly evenings by the fireplace - any time you have a few moments . . . or even a whole day. You will be transported to another time and place that brings light out of the darkness and hope from despair. I think you’ll love it!

Fast paced and engaging, this story covers decades and many character's lives and yet I couldn't help but keep turning those pages. Homespun is the kind of novel you lose yourself in as you worry over the outcome of those imaginary, but oh so real, colourful characters.

Homespun is a satisfying conclusion to the Silk Trilogy by Sophia Alexander. The strong women that first appear in SILK have now passed along their independent spirits to their offspring. As Homespun moves from the era of the First World War through the Second, we watch the families of Greeleyville and Kingstree grow in determination to take control of their lives. The recognition of what we need to leave in the past and what we need to move forward is explored through the various family dynamics of Alexander's work. I highly recommend this work of historical fiction about the families of the South Carolina's Lowcounty.

I enjoyed the third book in this trilogy. The final decades-long journey through everyone's lives twisted and turned as I turned the pages. I cheered, I cried, I held my breath, I was shocked and surprised. A very good conclusion to this trilogy.
