World acclaimed ultra-telephoto zoom reborn; meet the all-new next generation
The SP 150-600mm G2 (Generation 2) ultra-telephoto lens with upgraded optical performance enables handheld shooting with remarkable definition. This new lens builds upon the success of the current SP 150-600mm (Model A011) which Tamron first introduced in December, 2013, including better overall optical performance and faster AF speed, VC enhancements, plus Fluorine Coating, FLEX ZOOM LOCK and compatibility with optional 1.4X and 2X teleconverters. Rebuilt from the ground up to meet Tamron’s strict quality standards and design specifications, this new zoom combines smart engineering and high performance with quality craftsmanship, durability and user friendliness.
Enhanced optics meet greater versatility
The SP 150-600mm G2 includes three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements which completely eliminate axial and transverse chromatic aberrations. It also features upgraded optical construction (21 elements in 13 groups). Anti-reflection technologies, eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating improve light transmission and suppress internal reflections, including light reflected off the camera’s image sensors. So even when taking a backlit or semi-backlit photograph, ghosting and flare caused by reflected light are fully eliminated. Additional enhancements expand the lens’ versatility. For example, MOD (Minimum Object Distance) has been reduced to 2.2m (86.6 in) so you can enjoy tele-macro photography and dramatic bokeh.

Capture the moment with sharpness and accuracy
The Model A022 is equipped with the USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) ring-type motor that delivers excellent responsiveness and control. AF speed is significantly improved from current model, and it enables accurate high-speed focus even when capturing moving subjects. When shooting with AF, the Full-time Manual Focus override allows you to instantly make fine focusing adjustments manually, without having to switch between modes.
Keep it steady with improved VC
The VC (Vibration Compensation) effectiveness is equivalent to 4.5 stops, based on image stabilization performance levels established by CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) when using in VC MODE 3. Model A022 now has three types of VC modes, and it is possible to choose the optimum VC mode according to the situation for taking a photograph, such as when wishing to pan the camera. The improved VC minimizes blurring caused by slight camera movement, which is prevalent with long telephoto lenses and even more troublesome with higher-resolution cameras. VC enhances the freedom of hand-held shooting at slower shutter speeds required by low-light conditions such as dusk. VC MODE 1 is the standard mode that strikes a great balance between the stability of the viewfinder image and the stabilization effects. VC MODE 2 is exclusively used for panning. VC MODE 3 prioritizes the stabilization of the captured images and forgoes the stabilization of the viewfinder image. With the optional accessory TAMRON TAP-in Console, you can custom the configuration of VC MODE 1. Choose the viewfinder view of either Standard or viewfinder image priority.

This is a really good lens, I was impressed with the focusing, the sharpness at 600mm, and the quality of the pictures I took. It’s well balanced, optical stabilization is good.
So, why did I return it? It was too much lens for me. It was too heavy. I bought the lens in preparation for a trip to Africa next year. I decided on this lens because of the features. I figured at nearly 4.5 pounds that it shouldn’t be an issue. I brought it down with me to Florida for a weekend, and lugging it around a wetlands down there told me it was a major issue. I like to handhold, this lens was very difficult to do so. Also found it difficult to pan with a moving object.
In reality, you need a monopole to steady it. All in all, it was not the lens for me. But, for those looking for a lens in this range, I highly recommend it. It is a quality lens that does it job extremely well. That is why I give it five stars despite my experience with it.
Make no mistake, it is a beast to lug around. It's heavy and large enough to be cumbersome. Add in that I like to have it on a tripod it quickly becomes too much to hike long distances with. I'd totally still buy it though! I like up close photography, and that 600mm really allows you to get close at a moderate distance.
Added thing to be aware of...people see it and my kids sporting events and assume I am a newspaper photographer or something. You'll get so many comments, you'd better think up a few snappy replies. My favorite has been "Yeah I know, I am just overcompensating" lol

The bird shoot turned out great and having the zoom was a big benefit as I could back off the zoom when the birds got close instead of switching cameras like I would have had have done with the Canon.
I can't do a direct comparison with the Canon on sharpness but, comparing my images to those with the 600mm, I could not see a difference. Because of conditions, depth of field was pretty shallow for everyone so my edges may have been softer but you couldn't see it.
The bad news - I was using a Canon 7D MK II and in brighter conditions the focus speed was fine. However we had some overcast days with tough lighting and the lens was noticeably slow to focus. The 600mm folks indicated they didn't have a big problem with focus but I would say I did.
Overall I am very pleased with my purchase but wish the low light focus was faster. For shooting critters I would recommend this lens.
