I’m sure everyone’s heard most of this before, but Minecraft is currently one of the most popular games in the world, despite looking like it was made in the late 1980s. The freedom to do literally whatever you want to the world, the modification (modding) potential (and the truly epic modifications [mods] that already exist), the *creative* potential...It’s an incredible game.
<insert preferred deity here> knows how many copycat games have been created; as we all know, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, so that should tell you a lot. The game is deceptively simple at its core, but you can get some of the aforementioned mods if you want to add complexity.
On the subject of game mods, the old iPhone-app joke of “There’s an app for that” applies to Minecraft as well, in that “There’s a mod for that.” Want to build a massive functional industrial complex that processes all your mining yields for you? There’s a mod (ok, several dozen mods) for that. Would you rather explore the arcane mysteries of the world and bend reality itself to your will? There’s a mod (ok fine yes there’s more than one, although not as many as there are industrial mods) for that. More options for creative building? Mod. More powerful building tools? Mod.
Minecraft started out as a simple browser-based Java applet that, although it did gain *some* popularity, wasn’t widely known. When the company announced their plan to make a more complex standalone game, the current playerbase did spread the word, and it gained quite a bit of traction; in fact, I myself preordered the game practically the moment it was available for preorder (I then promptly forgot all about it until I got the official release notification 🤦🏻♂️), and have been thoroughly enjoying the game.
A bit of advice to the flock of potential new players: There are *two different editions* of Minecraft: Java edition, which is the original game, is only playable on PCs (including MacOS and Linux, unless I’m mistaken), and is as of the writing of this review the only edition that properly supports modding, and Bedrock edition, which is a relatively recent unification of all the console and mobile versions, which were previously individual editions (i.e. XB360 edition, PS3 edition, mobile edition, etc.), but currently does not support modding of the kind we see in the Java edition. Mojang (the developer) *has* been working hard on adding that kind of modding to Bedrock edition, so before too much longer that distinction will no longer exist, but it is my belief that most of the “big name” mods (ones that have been around since the early days) will most likely not switch entirely to Bedrock edition, and some of the biggest probably won’t want to tackle the added workload of literally (no joke) rewriting their mod completely from scratch as Bedrock edition does not use the same coding language as Java edition.
This product card will get you your very own Java edition, meaning you can mod to your heart’s content. I’m just one person, but I strongly believe that if you’re into open-world sandbox games, you’ll love Minecraft.
The $27 (at time of purchase) was intimidating compared to $8 on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and $20 on PS4. However, the purchase is justified... pending you understand the limitations of the license.
So first off is the game itself. Minecraft is probably supposed to be about gathering resources and building off those resources. But when you start to access servers, you start to see how far people are able to take that simple concept and expand on it to create entirely new games within Minecraft. Each server has its own set of rules and features. I really enjoy finding servers with "no grieving" and "family friendly filters" since the kids playing are under 10.
You actually get 3 versions of Minecraft with this purchase. The standard version requires the PC to use the Java runtime. Java can be insecure, so be sure that you understand the risks surrounding Java and update as frequently as possible; especially if you get into mods since they inject code into Minecraft that could potentially turn into something malicious that you may not be aware of since the game just runs and the bad stuff happens in the background.
On top of the standard version, oh get the Windows 10 Edition. This version is what you find on the Windows Store and is currently labeled as a Beta. This version natively supports Xbox 360 or Xbox One controllers and can connect and share worlds with other "Pocket Editions" of the game on Android and iOS.
Finally, you get the Mac version alongside the 2 Windows versions. So no matter the platform, you're covered. (FYI - the Java version runs on Linux).
IMPOTRANT NOTE!!! Your Minecraft purchase is for a single license. You attach the purchase to an email account and login to Minecraft with that. You can play offline once you have connected at least once. The issue is if you have multiple computers and people who want to play together. If you install the Java version on 2 different PCs, only one can play online at a time. Recently (Feb 2017) Mojang (developer) released an update to the launcher that eliminated an easy "dislayName" trick that fixed this issue. We're still figuring out what our options are but for now only one person online at a time. The other can play offline.
All things considered, the $27 was well worth the purchase. Besides a caution about how "addictive" this game can be, it comes highly recommended for any platform you decide.
