Big, Classic Large-diaphragm FET Condenser Sound

Sweetwater is excited to present you with another valuable tool in your quest to make better-sounding recordings. The Soyuz 017 FET large-diaphragm condenser microphone includes an interchangeable lollipop-style cardioid capsule with a hand-tuned, gold-sputtered 34mm diaphragm. Like all Soyuz microphones, the 017 FET is handcrafted in Russia. The body and capsules are manually machined; transformers are wound in-house; and the handwiring is point-to-point. The 017 FET delivers the big, classic condenser mic sound that makes your recordings come to life.

Warmth, dimension, and detail

The 017 FET’s handmade capsule makes these high-performance microphones the perfect choice when warmth, dimension, and detail are critical. The exceptional clarity and silky-smooth top end make the 017 FET ideal for capturing the subtle nuances of vocals, strings, and other complex instruments with challenging transients and sonics that span the full frequency spectrum. For louder sources, optional 10, 15, and 20dB pads are available that screw in between the capsule and electronics. So yes — the capsules are interchangeable, which makes the Soyuz 017 FET a super-versatile, well-rounded performer in the studio and onstage.

S17 capsule

Collectively, the engineers at Soyuz have spent decades studying, servicing, and building classic microphones; this unique pool of knowledge, craft, and skill — combined with the golden ears of numerous musicians, producers, and audio engineers — has culminated in the creation of the custom S17 capsule used in the 017 Series. Based on the legendary K67 capsule developed in 1960, Soyuz has further modified the design to achieve an airy yet accurate high end, elegantly smooth midrange presence, and a robust but balanced bottom end.

Eastern engineering, Western design

The Russian word soyuz means “alliance,” and it signifies the partnership that is the driving force behind Soyuz Microphones. In 2013 American vocalist David Arthur Brown and Russian entrepreneur Pavel Bazdyrev teamed up and launched a company to build world-class microphones in Russia. Soyuz now has 20 full-time employees, and Soyuz microphones are being used by top engineers and producers and have been adopted by artists such as Coldplay, Radiohead, the Lumineers, and Paramore.

What’s in your mic locker?

Among the most cherished assets of any world-class recording studio are its microphones. Take a peek in the mic locker, and you will almost certainly find vintage European tube and FET models made in the 1950s, ’60s, or ’70s. The “human-touch” manufacturing methods and discrete handwired circuitry of that era yielded microphones with sonic characteristics that are distinctly different from modern computer-assisted designs. Soyuz’s original tube and FET microphone designs — while not clones of vintage models — are produced in the old-school way, using manual lathes and drill presses and leveraging the former Soviet Union’s rich technological legacy as a foundation. So what’s in your mic locker? The answer will determine the sound of your recordings.

Modern classic

Just like many of you reading this, ive tried many different microphones. Always looking for that perfect one. I mainly ended up with a neumann, akg or a telefunken. I only need 3 mics for what i do. 2 small condensers and a large condenser microphone.
The akg 414, neumann u87 and telefunken tf51 were my go to vocal mics.
Let me tell you i have sold all of those mics and have only kept the soyuz 017 fet. Nothing wrong with the other microphones. They are great classics for a reason, but for what do and need now a days the soyuz covers all.
My main gripe is post recordings. I want to do the least post work possible or in other words get the sound i want as close as possible in the recording and soyuz 017 gives me that. The sound is just great for me. You get a hint of classic vintage color but without all the mud you get from vintage microphones. Big low end without the muffle, smooth mids and clear NON piercing highs.
Its a vintage modern sounding microphone. A confusing description but once you hear it youll know what im talking about.
The craftsmanship on these microphones are amazing. Very classy from the wooden box it comes in to the style of the mic.
I am now the proud owner of soyuz 017 fet and a pair of soyuz 013 fets and couldnt be happier. Turn around time on work is the fastest its ever been due to these tools.

The Soyuz 017 FET is an instant classic.

I produce vocals for a living and for years have traveled with my vintage 251. Tour busses, hotel rooms, airplanes... not exactly the best places to be lugging around an irreplaceable vintage mic.

I have been on the search for a mic that could replace my 251 for traveling sessions, and I have tried them all... literally, so many microphones. The thing that makes my 251 so magical is how it handles loud vocalists up close and needs minimal work at the mixing stage. It just works, every time. Until now I hadn't found anything that even came close: enter the Soyuz 017 FET.

The Soyuz 017 FET not only handles loud singers working the mic up close, it's built like a tank, it sounds like a 251 and an 87 had a baby but with the proximity effect of a good 47, and to top it off, it looks like a piece of art.

So, in an interesting turn of events the Soyuz now permanently lives on a mic stand next to my 251, I don't use it just for traveling sessions... it's that good.

I am happy to bring this thing out on the road with me and am confident that I'm not missing a thing leaving my 251 at home.

Another thing worth adding is that the company's reps are insanely helpful - they actually answer the phone! You know a good company when you can get a human on the other end of the line. Their rep Marc answered a few questions I had about the mic and has been nothing but a pleasure to work with.

Impeccable

I have the brass black version of this stellar mic. It's gorgeous. Inspiring to sing into. I hesitate to say it's the nicest vocal mic I've ever used. It's not a tube mic after all - but it's easily in the top 3 for me. There are many U87 comparisons to this mic, but I personally don't hear that. What I hear is the source, refined and balanced. Mid-forward? Perhaps, but it's broad, and the mids retain transparency - not conjested when pushed. It's a very pure signal, but with some softening of the transients. Just glorious. The unprocessed sound has a Rolls-Royce quality to it. One of my happiest purchases in recent memory. Not many products are made to this standard today.

Amazing mic!

An absolutely beautiful piece of craftsmanship. This mic is like speaking through velvet. Smooth and full, but without losing any of that high end. Conversational and narration VOs are just perfect...I feel like it's giving me a better version of me. This is going to be my go-to VO mic for a long time. If you're a p-popper like me, it might take you a little adjusting...but once you do, you'll be as golden as the shine off this little piece of art. Not to mention, the shock mount and wooden case it comes in are just as sturdy and good looking as the mic itself.

Like butter!

I LOVE this mic. It sounds buttery smooth and looks incredible. It does have a little U87 in it but has a little more
ooomph. Buy this mic and you literally won't need another mic. I use mine for voice/vocals but it's very flexible in use.
