Like all cutting tools, it must be sharpened consistently. So buy a lansky puck or something. You don't need a file unless you get some deep nicks. A man's hatchet is a mystical object. Using it connects you back to your ancient fathers. I have a slightly larger Fiskars, with a synthetic handle and anti-friction blade coating and improved grip. It just doesn't have the romance of this tool, so I take this instead. I think of "Two Tramps In Mud Time" and Gary Paulsen's books every time I use it. The branding on the handle detracts. The sheath is thin and somewhat unattractive, but light and functional and genuine leather.
Steel seems to be good, not too hard not too soft. It's more expensive than lots of Chinese models, and a lot cheaper than some European one's. I purchased to use, some reviews are comparing it to $100 $200 and $300 hatches saying it's inferior. It may or may not be inferior compared to those, either way apples to oranges.
