Nice hatchet for your rucksack

Nice hatchet for your rucksack
I haven't had a chance to put this hatchet to work, yet; I purchased it as a lighter-weight alternative to my Hultafors Hunting Axe. This tool is effectively a better-made, grownup version of a "Boy Scout" camp hatchet. The head is well-fitted to the handle, the poll/butt has sufficient heft and surface area for pounding tent stakes, and the steel "seems" to be of good quality (time and use will tell). The sheath is formed from sturdy leather, and has a snap fastener-style flap that completely encloses the head. You will have to remove the sheath for use as a camp "mallet." Since there's probably some shoppers who'd like a better look at the sheath, I've attached a couple of pictures for reference; including a look at the belt sleeve. I attached mine to my backpack, as intended, so this wasn't a concern, for me.I'm deducting one star because it simply wasn't sharpened to an acceptable edge, out of the box, for my tastes. I'll need to put in some work with my Lansky stone prior to use in the field. This may be due to the "great starter axe for the new camper" attribute in the product description- understandable if you're trying to keep youngsters from cleaving themselves on their first-ever swing; but at this price point I wouldn't expect many parents or kids purchasing this as a "first hatchet."I'll update this review should any quality issues develop during use or sharpening, but I don't expect to have any problems with this American-made tool. Be safe, and keep your powder dry, my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camping/hiking hatchet!
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2019
I love it, my only criticism is that the handle was too narrow for my hand, so I wrapped it with paracord and painted resin on it and now its wider and the cord is as hard as woodpecker lips. It worked great!
