The Celts knew it as Annwyn, the Otherworld—certainly not a destination IT professional Lori Cooper anticipates when distracting herself with a magazine puzzle page in the dentist’s waiting room. Clues buried in the answers lead her to Tamsin, who claims to command a band of warriors for the queen of the fay. From this, Lori concludes that Tamsin is both insane and dangerous. She’s also quite worryingly attractive.

However, Lori’s own sanity becomes a bigger concern when she finds herself held captive in a strange world with yet more puzzles to solve. She must pick her way through layers of illusion and deceit. Nothing and nobody, including Tamsin, is quite as they seem. Who can Lori trust? She will need to uncover the full truth if she is to return home, mind and body intact.

About the Author

Jane Fletcher is a GC LS award-winning writer and has also been short-listed for the Gaylactic Spectrum and Lambda Literary Awards. She is author of two ongoing sets of fantasy/romance novels: the Celaeno Series—The Walls of Westernfort, Rangers at Roadsend, The Temple at Landfall, Dynasty of Rogues, and Shadow of the Knife; and the Lyremouth Chronicles—The Exile and The Sorcerer, The Traitor and The Chalice, The Empress and The Acolyte, and The High Priest and the Idol.

Her love of fantasy began at the age of seven when she encountered Greek mythology. This was compounded by a childhood spent clambering over every example of ancient masonry she could find (medieval castles, megalithic monuments, Roman villas). Her resolute ambition was to become an archaeologist when she grew up, so it was something of a surprise when she became a software engineer instead.

Born in Greenwich, London, in 1956, she now lives in southwest England where she keeps herself busy writing both computer software and fiction, although generally not at the same time.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I guarantee you it will not be the last. Excellent story and excellent characters. Great adventures

I liked the book but somehow it just fell short in the feels department. I just didn’t connect as well as I usually do with Ms Fletcher’s work. Still a good solid read with an unusual storyline, did not waste my time and I did enjoy it. Not sure why it didn’t quite fully hit the mark for me.

I absolutely adored this book. I have never read such a compelling fantasy story before, and to have it feature lesbian love made it perfect all around. I loved the description of the places and the creatures. I do have a small complaint though. My complaint is that the love story didn’t develop until the end of the book practically and the love scene felt rushed and the descriptions were rushed as well. It was more of a fantasy than a love story. Other than that, this was a wonderful read.

Took me a minute to get into this one. I'm so used to Fletcher's fantasy world's. Glad I stuck with it! That's the only reason it didn't get 5 stars and I almost forgot about that by the time I finished. What I'm trying to say is it ended up as a 5 star book! Read it. I'm sure you'll agree. Okay, I'm changing my rating!

It's always refreshing to read an adventure-based sapphic novel after reading so many romances. Complex and very likeable characters, great flow, plot twists, and an exciting fantasy setting.

SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: award-winning book (Goldie), fantasy (out of some comfort zones), meet-cute, unusual job, bet or a dare, not a romance, possibly a full-time writer and non-USA/UK setting. For UNICORN: character over 50 (time passes differently). Other categories might apply.

I love Jane Fletcher...one of the first lesbian story tellers that I read. After reading this one I am now encouraged to go back and re-read her older works!

IT-specialist/programmer accidentally travel to a different world where she is held captive by a fay queen in order to solve ancient puzzles. She quickly realize something isn't quite right and wonder who she can trust in this weird world.

Lori: A down-on-her-luck programmer who recently lost her job and has to move back to her parents. She's very intelligent and has a natural talent for deducing things.

Pro:
Well described, rich and unique world - The world and the social constructs is well described and consistent throughout the book.
Balance between history, fantasy and computer science - Fletcher has balanced science and fiction perfectly in this book. I also enjoy the small tidbits of history which helps the book feel anchored in reality.
Intelligent (s)hero - It's refreshing to read a book with a "nerdy" protagonist who stays true to herself and wield logic and empathy as her weapons.
Puzzles!

Con:
-

This is an adventure book, with a slow burn romance. Whilst it isn't explicit nor filled with gore it tackles dark subjects such as segregation, both mental and physical abuse and characters who can mess with minds. This book is not a cute and fluffy fantasy.

I liked characters. I felt that the storytelling lacked cohesion in spots, but it sure didn't keep me from reading. This is one of my favorite authors, but not one of my favorite of her books.

An IT. Consultant solves a puzzle and ends up in fairyland, where she has to deal with duplicitous fey, dragons, boggarts, lack of bathrooms and sexual attraction to someone she really shouldn’t.

A great book with a good plot and interesting characters. There are turns and twists to keep you geussing and good amount of action. The addition of a romance is the icing on the cake. I thoroughly recommend this to any fantasy fan and lesbian romance fan
