Sharptooth Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Sharptooth runs through the forest under the light of the moon and spends each day hiding from the sun in the burnt ruins of her family home. One night she braves the cobblestone streets of the nearby town and stumbles upon a silver-haired girl in a walled garden.

Lyssa’s parents couldn’t stand to see her wither away, so they have left her with only a maid for company. She thinks her unusual new friend is just the thing to distract her in her final days…but Sharptooth has other plans.

When Lyssa’s parents return with a dangerous stranger, the girls will risk everything to seize control of their destinies and create a new future together.

For Sharptooth and Lyssa, this is just
the beginning.

First, I should note that, as I turn 30 this year, I'm not the target audience. Or maybe I am.

Either way, I zoomed through this book in a day while waiting for code to compile, and I loved it. I adore Sharptooth and Lyssa. Mika does a fabulous job developing these two friends.

Also, quite relished the theme of identity and belonging. Lovely read. Much of the nuance of the story will go over my daughter's head now (she's six), but I think ages 8 and up would love the story.

Well done, Mika! Hope to see more with Sharptooth and Lyssa. (Hint, hint)

I'm not the targeted demographic, but I loved this story, being a sucker for any kind of supernatural fiction. I absolutely couldn't wait to see how it would all turn out and was delighted by the ending (kinda Interview with the Vampire meets Shakespeare in Love, but more innocent--it being MG and all). I'd love to read their further adventures.

This story builds in complexity and self-awareness with the main character. I'm not going to tell you anything about the story, but it's unique enough and told in a way that you and the protagonist need to discover it together. No spoilers! The book sets up a new fantasy world at a natural pace and still feels like a complete story. It is thoughtfully edited and doesn't have any grammar issues which take away from the writing and story. The story is also enjoyable for both actual YA and more mature audiences. Yes, I am looking at all you English PhDs who binge YA fiction. I am really looking forward to sequels!

a criminally underrated sapphic vampire love story that i wish my younger self read.

seriously, i want what the two girls have.

(i received an advance review copy for free, and i am leaving this review voluntarily.)

This is a MG novel – gothic of sorts. I like the combination since it’s one you don’t generally find. Told in first person from Sharptooth’s perspectives it has an interesting, almost stream-of-conscious feel to it at first and settles into a more conventional storytelling structure as it progresses (and yes, there’s a reason for it).

Subsisting on blood and sweetcakes (?!) she forms an unlikely friendship. And while some might call her a monster, she’s not the real one.

This is a quick moving book suitable for a wide variety of readers who like their gothic a bit… lighter on the gory side. I enjoyed this read and think it would be wonderful for a Halloween read for younger or older readers.

I would love to see more set in this world.
