Product Description
Why Choose RainPoint WIFI Water Timer
A Smart Irrigation System For Your Garden
One WiFi hub can be paired with 4 WiFi sprinkler timers (1-Zone or 2-Zone) and acts as a smart plug for other devices.
And one WiFi water valve can be paired with 1 WiFi soil sensor (not included).
How to connect this WiFi water timer to WiFi?
1. The WiFi water timer can only connect to 2.4Ghz WiFi. 2. Follow the steps in the manual or how-to video to connect the WiFi Hub to 2.4Ghz WiFi first, then pair the WiFi water timer with the WiFi Hub. 3. If you cannot connect, please try AP mode.
How do I keep the timer connected stably?
Please connect the WiFi hub to the 2.4Ghz WiFi as close to the WiFi water timer as possible and at a height of more than 1 meter above the ground, so as to increase the signal propagation range of the WiFi hub.
Can the water timer survive a winter to continue next year?
Sure, but you'll need to take the timer off the faucet before the temperature drops below 37°F and shake out the interior water and remove the batteries, then keep it in a warm room.

The WiFi controlled water timer and the included RF (radio frequency) Hub allow for lots more flexibility, control, and measurement of my irrigation, and also allows me to add extras such as a sensor to monitor soil temperature and humidity.
Setup of the System is easy (I followed the detailed instructions in the printed manual, but there's also a link to a setup video); you'll need a WiFi Router that operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency, and 4 AA batteries for the Water Timer (the yellow & gray device with the hose connections). The app for my android phone was available on the Google Play store (iPhone app is available on the App Store), so I downloaded it, opened it on my phone, and followed the instructions to connect the app to the router. Next I followed the instructions to connect the Hub (the oval device with the outlet), then installed the batteries into the Water Timer, and followed the instructions for pairing the Water Timer to the Hub. (Note that the Water Timer communicates with the Hub, and the Hub communicates with your Router, so the Water Timer doesn't directly pair with the router.)
The RainPoint software that runs on my phone is intuitive and easy to operate; From the Main "Parameter" menu, it lets me know how many gallons (or liters) of water have been used, the battery status, whether the water is running or not, and the next scheduled irrigation. From the "Irrigation control" menu, I can choose between 1 and 60 minutes of irrigation, and from the "Plan" menu, I can set my watering schedule and implement rain delays if desired. (See screenshot photos of the different app pages including a screenshot from the "Sensor" page - which is available if a sensor is added to the system.)
In playing with the system, I discovered that some of the features are really helpful for remote monitoring, for instance, the Water Timer not only turns the water on and off, but it measures the water usage. I thought I had an error in the software or device because there was no water usage showing on the main menu page; it turns out I had turned off the spigot that feeds the Water Timer. My neighbor lost three palm trees last year because her house renters turned off the spigot that irrigated the lawn! I also like that the app sends me push alerts on my phone letting me know when the system is active and when it stops. Additionally, the Hub has an integral 110 volt outlet that can be controlled by the RainPoint app so that devices such as grow lights can be activated -the software even has a built-in timer function for this outlet.
The remote monitoring functions of the system can be greatly enhanced by utilizing the RainPoint Moisture and Temperature Sensor: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B09Q2YW31Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I included a screenshot of the readings from the sensor, because I found that it was really helpful to have this device in the remote controlled system. I will review the sensor separately.
Suffice to say, this is a powerful system with lots of options I've not even mentioned. I was pleased to get more control over my irrigation system and be able to operate it remotely for about $30-35 more than a non-Wifi based system ($60 - $65 if the Sensor is added). I consider myself to be fairly technically proficient, however, with all emerging technologies there are little hiccups, both with the product and with user error, so I also had a chance to communicate with RainPoint's Customer Service. They were responsive and helpful, in answering my questions both by telephone and by email.

Why did I feel the need to switch from a regular timer and find a wifi solution? Last year we had a normal (non-wifi timer) but it rained a lot so it was really a waste of water and $$ on our water bill. Being able to both check the weather and manually delay watering and/or set an automatic rain delay when rain is detected in the zip code is very cool, and I get peace of mind that it IS working when I get the notifications to my phone each time the irrigation turns on and off, so I don't need to be concerned about my trees or second guess that something has gone wrong while I am out of town and have nightmares that my new trees are slowly withering away... It is obviously also a win environmentally.
Following the instructions, it was super easy to set up and get on the wifi. Less than 5 minutes. The app itself is not perfect but pretty clean and easy to use overall. Setting up the auto rain delay was a little more complicated (and I think it helps if you understand if/then logic - it was clearly designed by programmers and I think could be a little more user friendly, but just READ THE INSTRUCTIONS [unlike my other half] and you'll be ok.)
The unit itself seems to have a good seal with no leaks when it's screwed on the spigot and can withstand the pressure of the water from the spigot (with one note - see below).
We've had it attached and going three times a week for 3 months and the battery still shows full, so this should last us the full summer at least.
The product also came with a free 5-year warranty if you register it. I don't think it says this in the product description on Amazon, but when it arrived the box included a card with an extended 5-year warranty. (In contrast, the non-wifi timer I got from Home Depot for $40 last summer has already had half the screen already stop working...)
Overall, a really good experience with this product and would highly recommend! Just just three things worth noting for potential users:
1. I have this attached to a splitter -- one half of the splitter feeds this timer (and it's open all the time), and the other half of the splitter can be turned on if someone needs the hose. When we first bought this, after a few weeks, the pressure of the hose blew the timer off the splitter so the spigot was going full blast with nothing attached! We are grateful our neighbor turned it off. I replaced the original plastic splitter with a brass splitter that has a deeper thread and we were back in business with no issues since.
2. I sometimes get random alerts to my phone which don't relate to actual activity on the timer. I contacted customer service and they were very responsive and came back to me within hours. They suggested offloading the app and dis/reconnecting the timer hub from my account which should debug it. Waiting to see if this does the trick, but it's not the worst thing in the world in the scheme of things. Not worth NOT buying this product if this is the worst trouble I've had.
3. There is no option to set the timer for every second day, only specific days of the week. This means that there will be at least one time a week when the trees get watered two days in a row or have two days with no water. Again, a bit annoying, but not the worst. Based on feedback from the customer service people, it sounds like this is being addressed in future versions of the product/app updates, but again I wouldn't consider this enough of a reason not to buy this product.
I rarely write reviews, but after doing quite a lot of research on wifi timers and relying heavily on the reviews, I thought I should add my experience so I hope this helps others!
