How to PlayMove, build and win – but it may not be that easy! To begin, players use their blocks and builder pieces to move into neighbouring spaces on the board. The first one to build a 3-story structure wins! Along the way, players may end up between a rock and a hard place. When divine intervention is necessary, each player can use their God card to bend or break the rules, according to their will. |
Develop Strategy SkillsFacing-off against opponents in the game of Santorini is a great way for kids and adults alike to develop critical thinking! Players will need to anticipate other players’ moves and think on the spot when a God card is used! Not only fun and exciting, this game is a great way to hone analytical skill. |
Fun for Kids and AdultsSimple enough for a child to grasp, but complex enough to challenge an adult, Santorini is a great option for family game night. Since players determine the level of difficulty, each game can be tailored! Kids can face off against their friends, or adults can challenge each other in this battle of pure strategy. With so much to explore Santorini is the board game fit for the Gods. |
Stunning Game SetNot just fun and challenging, the game of Santorini is as beautiful as its namesake. The picturesque board and building blocks are reminiscent of Greek architecture and are designed to make play even more enjoyable! Bring the Mediterranean into your living room with Santorini. |

Santorini is a 3D board game with a Greek myth theme set on the Greek island of Santorini. You battle as players assisted by gods and demigods to build the town and see who reaches the top of the tallest structure in it first..
DETAILS
Players: 2-4 (though 2 is optimal)
Ages: 8+ (though a 6-year-old would grasp its simple play)
Play Time: 20 minutes
Publisher: Spin Master / Roxley
Designer: Gordon Hamilton
Illustrators: David Forest & Lina Cossette
COMPONENTS
22 Level 1 Building Stories
18 Level 2 Building Stories
14 Level 3 Building Stories
18 Domes
1 Cliff Pedestal
1 Island Board
6 Builders, in three colors
30 God Powers cards
1 Manual of four pages
Some editions of the game include an Ocean Board that goes around the Cliff Pedestal, but it is not included in Spin Master edition, which is the one reviewed.
Santorini has been around in one form or another for a few decades now, but this is an updated version of the game, one that many fans were hoping to see finally hit the market again. The quality of the components is good and parallels that of many of the other newer board games on the market that are considered to be hobbyist games. The plastic pieces are durable, well molded, and should last. The artwork has a fun, youthful chibi style.
The manual is well done, and because the game is so simple, most of it is devoted to further unpacking the powers of the various God Power cards. The cards depict various gods and demigods of the Greek pantheon, and on of the nice features is that the powers they grant players match what that deity is known for, so Aphrodite would force the other player to always move next to one of your players, or the Minotaur would allow you to force an opponent’s Builder out of its space.
PLAY
While the game states it plays with people, it’s just teams of two. The more common player total is a head-to-head two. Three players is possible, but it’s a little more chaotic. Two players really is best.
The goal is to move around the island board and construct the white and blue buildings the island of Santorini is known for. You call upon variable player powers granted you by the God Powers cards to use your skills to outwit the other player/team and get to the top of a three-story building first.
The game is simple, with just two rules:
While abiding by any special abilities your builder has been granted by the gods, move one of your builders into a neighboring space, either on the same level, one level up, or any number of levels down. Then build a building level immediately next to that builder you moved. On the third level, place a dome instead, which will prevent that space from being used..
You win if you move one of your builders up to the third level.
PRO
+ Fast play
+ Simple rules, but tough choices
+ Teachable in just a couple minutes
+ Looks beautiful as the town rises on the board, and will attract onlookers
+ God Powers cards ensure no two games play alike, so plenty of replayability
+ Appeals to a wide variety of players
+ Great price and value
CON
- Santorini is confrontational and has a screwage element to it that more sensitive gamers might not like
- Unpacking and packing the game can take a little time because of the many pieces, but this is a quibble
EXPANSION
Santorini has an expansion that can be purchased, Golden Fleece, that adds more builder pieces, additional God Powers cards, new Hero Cards, the Ocean Board, and more. It’s a worthy upgrade for fans of the base game.
SUMMARY
Santorini is a new classic. Anyone looking for an alternative to chess, checkers, or other head-to-head game will find it an enjoyable choice. And it looks great too.

SUMMARY
Santorini is a new classic. Anyone looking for an alternative to chess, checkers, or other head-to-head game will find it an enjoyable choice. And it looks great too.
If you're looking for a pure strategy game (no dice rolls, or cards to draw, etc.), definitely get this one! I got this game based on all the great reviews out there, and I am really glad I did. Earlier in the year, before the pandemic got rolling, I happened to have bought several board games, including Dixit, Catan Jr., Ticket to Ride Jr., and Kingdomino. We have been home a lot during the pandemic and the kids have been having fun working through the games. Although they have liked all of the games I bought, Santorini has been everybody's favorite.
We have played it with the 8 year old and the 5 1/2 year old, and both love it. Since we started playing it, they have taken it out to play themselves several times (we parents will play when we have time). They love the building aspect and they really love the God power cards. I think they really get a kick out of having a power to hold over the other player(s); of course, the biggest kick is the power they get to hold over the adult players. haha.
As a Classics major, I was always interested in getting a game based on Greek mythology, but many of the games out there are a bit belabored or too serious/dark for my taste. This is why I love Santorini's cartoony take on the Greek gods. The artwork is truly outstanding: funny, diverse, and thoughtful (with nice touches like Hera with her iconic peacock, or LOL-worthy Eros in a hot tub).
The components are great, mimicking the actual style of Santorini buildings (I was surprised that the blue domes are a real thing!). I also came to appreciate the plastic base, after I spilled water all over the table...the board didn't get wet =) [side note: it looks like there are different editions, but I had no problems with this one]
From the rules, to the artwork, to the materials, the game is well conceived and well designed at every level. This one's a keeper!
Top reviews from other countries
It plays a lot like the end game of a chess match where you have few pieces, and each move is very important. Very strategic.
Special cards can add individual powers, to add more variety to your games. While the asymmetry makes for a less "serious" game, it still maintains the depth and fun. Some of these cards turn the game into a more tactical experience rather than a more drawn out strategic battle. It has the option for a 3-player game, which turns it into less of a head to head battle of wits, and a bit more of a chaotic match (since your fate is no longer strictly your own, and if people gang up on you, there's nothing you can do) -- obviously this is more for silly fun, rather than strategic fun.
Strongly recommended to more cerebral players. I laughed at the reviews calling it "dull, boring" -- one person's criticism was that he didn't want to put in the mental effort to find the winning move. An abstract is only as engaging and deep as those playing it... I'll leave it at that. I'm not trying to sound pretentious here, but it's like people criticizing Go because it is "too boring" -- missing how deep and incredibly crazy the game can get.
Again, like chess/go, this game is best with those at similar skill levels. Better players will almost always win -- there is no luck, or wacky comeback mechanism that will let someone pull out a free win. Against an opponent of comparable skill, you'll have some extremely tense matches, full of opportunities where you can lay traps, block opponents, etc.
So not for everyone, but not everything is supposed to be. If you want a game that requires thinking to win, get yourself a copy.
Also, the table presence is great! Accessible for all ages. Would be great if there is somehow a travel version.
