I thought I'd give the 23UM57 a try, especially at the very low price point. I am glad I did. I was worried it might be a dumbed down version of the 34", but it doesn't seem so. It is an IPS monitor, so it does great with colors and photos. It has some gaming controls, but these seem layered on top of the original controls. The quality of the image is not quite as good as my 34", but very good still.
The image is crisp. The color was a bit off on the factory default, but they have extensive adjustment controls (6 color hue and saturation sliders!). I was able to tweak it perfectly. Some of the main controls of the 34", like the reader modes, are buried but they are there. LG nested them to put the gaming functions up front. They have presets for FPS and other styles. I can't attest much to the gaming functions. I played with them a bit, but they seem like all presets- better to just adjust things yourself.
I did not bother with the split screen and dual control function. I know from the 34" they are pretty useless. The smaller size isn't that bad either. It is reasonable. I know from experience, having the ultra-wide is amazing for working with multiple documents. There is just something about having everything on one screen. And it makes gaming a lot of fun too.
There is a control for volume, but I can't get any sound from mine. I checked the website and I don't see anything in tech specs about sound, so the control might just be residual from the other monitors. My 34" does have speakers, although they are nothing great.
I am connecting to a Mac Pro with a $10 amazon mini display adapter because the LG only takes HDMI cables. I am able to get full resolution with this configuration.
At this price point, it is a great buy.
I have had this monitor now for 149 days now.
Looks-
Has a very nice anti-glare coating on the screen to help prevent glaring. Has a piano black glossy finish everywhere, which means it leaves fingerprints everywhere on it. I would have definitely preferred a matte finish for this.
Quality-
Has a very nice and elegant base that is very sturdy. Whenever you shake our desk, the monitor isn't going to be moving too much. It feels like it can hold that monitor well. Everything, in general, feels sturdy and secure.
Screen Size-
I purchased this in the 25-inch version, and I think it looks fairly good. Although I don't like how it feels like the top got cut off. I definitely like the screen aspect ratio though. As an ultrawide monitor at 21:9 aspect ratio and 2560-1080 pixels, things look amazing, epically movies. When watching movies, the movie feels up the whole screen and gives you that true cinema movie experience. For YouTube videos that are 21:9, get the "Ultrawide Video" plugin for chrome so that the videos will feel up the whole screen.
Gaming potential-
I use this monitor for all my games and it works great. Most games these days already support 21:9 aspect ratio, so you really don't need to worry about compatibility. Older games and brand new games may not support ultrawide monitors, so you may need to play the game out of full screen.
But in games, it looks amazing. My favorite types of games to play with this are first person space games. They look amazing. You usually get more field of view in games, which puts you at an advantage.
Overall, this is a great monitor and I plan on getting two more eventually.
I'm giving them four stars, for now, as I haven't had the opportunity to thoroughly calibrate the colors/tone/contrast, and I have just two criticisms.
TL;DR - This is an excellent monitor, with easy setup, for folks who want extra horizontal screen real estate. For moving between tasks, or having open, ready reference for tasks, side-by-side, the wide, extra space is a boon to productivity. That said, it's marketed as a gaming display, but I think that's a bit far-fetched, considring the limited number of games which can take advantage of a 21:9 aspect ratio (Borderlands, I think, and a handful of others). If you need proportionate/comparable vertical real-estate (coding and writing documents comes to mind), you probably want to move on, to something else, like something with a 21:10 ratio.
Worth mentioning, the display comes with an HDMI cable. This is a thoughtful touch, especially in a world, for which, for years, TVs have shipped absent of any video cables, and printers have shipped absent of necessary USB cables, because most manufactures fail, when it comes to thinking about the consumer.
Also worth mentioning, to speak of cables, if the device, to which you're connecting this LG wide display, does not have HDMI (i.e., ships with DisplayPort and/or DVI out), you'll need to use an *active* adapter- the usual DisplayPort to HDMI cable will NOT support the 2560x1080 resolution. The highest resolution supported by normal conversion cables (and listed by your OS) will likely be 1920x1080. Because my Lenovo MiniDock has two DisplayPorts for video out, I used 2 Cable Matters Gold Plated Active DisplayPort to HDMI, male to female, adapters, and they worked like a charm, for enabling the full 2560x1080.
Let's get the two criticisms out of the way...
Criticism One:
This display has HDMI connectivity ONLY. As mentioned above, this becomes a HUGE pain in the ass, if your device does not have HDMI, because most adapter/conversion cables will not support the display's 2560x1080 max resolution. Most likely, someone will not realize this until they have tried, found out the hard way, and wasted time on an internet search. Only active adapters will support the max resolution, and HDMI-only seems like an odd choice, for a product obviously targeted toward use with computers.
Criticism Two:
The power adapter for this monitor has a short, flimsy cable.
On the short side, this may not be an issue, for folks who have their desk almost immediately close to a power outlet (such as folks who place their desk directly against a wall, with the outlet directly behind the desk) and don't need to elevate their monitors. But, if you can't be close to a power outlet, or simply don't want to position your workspace according whatever length of power cable is supplied with your display, the length of the cable on this thing will come up VERY short. This problem is magnified, when you're using a VESA mount (which folks who value literal desktop real estate are prone to do).
On the flimsy side, it's a cable without much protection. The plastic used to provide that protection is too soft and too thin. This seems odd, considering the adapter, itself, is a full, three-pronged adapter. Do not bend the cable, or even step on it. That's right, I'm wary, even, of accidentally treading on the damend thing. Combine that with being short, and, well, you might want to go ahead and purchase a firm extension cable, and make sure you tuck this thing well out of the way.
Top reviews from other countries
This is a productivity monitor, though it offers some basic AMD Freesync compatibility for gaming at 60hz. 32" is a nice size for 4K and video/images are clear and text is sharp after adjusting the sharpness in the picture adjustment settings menu. I'm not experiencing any text blurriness vs. some other reviews here and this is while connected via DisplayPort. Also, no significant black crush or dithering - so perhaps I just lucked out in terms of a good panel.
I'm not using the provided stand as this monitor is VESA arm compatible. The construction is all plastic and seems solid enough and no better or worse than what I've seen from Samsung in comparison. It is also fairly light in terms of weight - so it is easy to mount and move around. I haven't noticed any flickering with the panel or any creaks/pops or significant heat being generated by the components - which I honestly can't say the same with Samsung in my experience.
If you are considering a 4K Monitor, I'd seriously consider and recommend this 32" VA in comparison to other 27/28" IPS offerings at a slightly lower price point. At around $400, I don't believe there is a better purchase option for a Budget 60hz 4K monitor. Note, don't purchase for HDR, as it really doesn't even meet the most basic HDR technical specifications.
El unico punto en contra que he encontrado al tener este monitor es que no todo el contenido es compatible con la resolucion, algunos juegos necesitan mods o configuraciones externas para ejecutarse en modo ultrawide o deben ser jugados con barras negras en las esquinas.
