Conflict is essential to story—regardless of genre. The friction between what a character wants and the lengths they will go to reach that goal is what pulls readers through your book.

Great conflict is what leaves readers cheering (or crying) at the end of a story.

Using humour and her deep knowledge of human behaviour, counsellor and award-winning author Eileen Cook will guide you through the causes of conflict, the differences between internal and external conflict, and show you how conflict resolution techniques can be turned upside down to ramp up the tension in your book.

Filled with practical tips, examples and prompts, this is a craft book you’ll keep on your shelf to use again and again.

Review

"Eileen Cook's craft books have earned a permanent place on my writing craft bookshelf. Filled with concise, easy to understand explanations and detailed exercises, it helped me create my first award-winning novel. If I could have only one book on how to write conflict this would be it." Brenda Murphy, novelist, 2020 GCLS Goldie Award Winner ***If your novel lacks punch, you'll want to grab "Create Story Conflict" by Eileen Cook. Eileen takes you step by step through the process of adding conflict--and therefore interest--to your story. I've published 37 novels and was writing my 38th--for the third time--when I read this guide. Halfway through, I realized exactly where the problem was with my work-in-progress and her suggestions for adding tension to your plot sparked some great new ideas that took my book to a whole new level. I can't recommend "Create Story Conflict" enough." Author Cora Seton ***"This is the perfect book at any point in your draft to understand how to up the tension and create better conflict. Cook's witty narrative will hold your attention and get you writing." Author James McCann***"Wise, practical and full of humor, Eileen Cook uses her talents as a writer, educator and former counselor to write a thoughtful and thorough guide that will help you--new and seasoned writer--upgrade the conflict in your stories and enjoy the process." I read this book in two days because I didn't want to put it down! Even though this book focuses on helping fiction writers I found it very insightful to write story conflict in general. I am working on a memoir and obviously not making up characters, but her book is helping me to create better scenes. I now understand conflict better and how to show it. Her counseling background insight was really helpful to understand the underlying contradictive wants and needs of all of the characters in my memoir and how to write it. It made me really THINK about what and why I am writing and how it is moving the story forward. Eileen is super funny too! It was not only informational but very entertaining. If I could recommend any book on writing this year, it would be Create Story Conflict.

Create Story Conflict is one of my new favorite books on how to write conflict. Eileen Cook takes you through the process understanding conflict, how to implement it in your work, and how to vary the use of conflict.

Eileen is a genius at teaching conflict. Throughout the book, she uses her humor to illustrate the us conflict, and speaking for myself, humor is a great way to aid in remembering what you are taught.

If you suffer as I do, from not using enough conflict in your stories, I highly recommend Create Story Conflict. It sure has helped me in understanding conflict and how important it is to put our characters in situations that will create tension and conflict.

Thanks to Create Story Conflict, I am armed with the knowledge I need to implement conflict in my stories for greater impact.

I enjoyed this quick run through reminder book. Definitely expected more content for the price, but overall I'm grateful to add it to my stack of craft books for later use when I'm struggling with a manuscript.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!

Create Story Conflict assisted me in plotting my novel, as it contains many tips on how to ramp up tension through various types of conflict. The author's experience working as a counsellor for twenty years certainly shines through, as she has an excellent understanding of human psychology and why communication between people often breaks down. Each section ends with "Your Turn," which includes intelligent prompts on how to utilize the concepts in our own writing. In addition, the author's humorous presentation of the material made each page of the book a delight and I was often laughing out loud.
I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A complete and easy-to-understand guide
Reviewed in Canada on July 14, 2021
I highly recommend Create Story Conflict as a wonderful resource for authors who struggle with conflict: it's to-the-point, concise, clear, encouraging and validating. It covers everything you need to know in just the right amount of depth for you to understand without getting bored. The book itself was also in good condition (new).

The book covers the definition of conflict, the different types of conflict, the causes for conflict, the different possible character reactions to conflict, tricks to increase conflict, stakes, pitfalls to avoid, as well as how to overcome conflict avoidance as an author. Each section included great concrete suggestions to apply to your writing, several examples, and many tips. A truly complete and yet simple guide!

As an author who avoided conflict out of fear, self-doubt and giving up too easily, it really encouraged me to no longer shy away from conflict, but didn't guilt me at all. Conflict now seems fun, and I feel like I have the tools to tackle it! Thank you!

The only cons were that I found it could have focused a little more on internal conflict, and most example-scenarios followed the format of an argument between two people, which is a pretty limited form of conflict. However I understand that the author may have done this as it is an easy form to understand, and the tips themselves can apply to almost all types of conflict.
