Random Acts of Crazy: Opposites Attract Small Town Romantic Comedy (Random Series, Book 1) Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 4,208 ratings

I never intended to pick up a naked hitchhiker wearing nothing but a guitar. A guitar. Really. I don't collect guys like that (don't ask what kind of guys I do collect), but when you spot a blond, tanned, sculpted man with a gorgeous smile and his thumb poking up and practically begging you to stop - you stop.

And I definitely never thought I'd be staring into the bright blue eyes of Trevor Connor, the lead singer for Random Acts of Crazy, an indie rock star I followed like the slobbering fileshare fangirl I am. How he came to be nude and lost 600 miles from home is quite the tale, but how we fell in love is even more unreal.

Because someone like Trevor Connor, headed to Harvard Law next year, isn't supposed to want someone like me, a rural Ohio chick majoring in boredom at Convenience Store University who is all curves and frizzy blonde hair and manners so unpolished they have sharp edges that make you bleed.

But he did.

When his best friend, Joe Ross, the bass player for Random Acts of Crazy and a man who makes Calvin Klein models look like Shrek, drove 11 hours through the night to rescue him, though, it got real complicated. It's one thing to like two different guys and be torn.

What do you do, though, when maybe - just maybe - you don't have to choose?

Random Acts of Crazy (a New York Times and USA Today best seller) is a stand-alone, full-length novel that explores issues of identity for the three main characters and doesn't shy away from mature content. Plus, Darla has a sailor's mouth.

Be warned. Be ready. But most of all - prepare to be random.

This is my first book by Julia Kent, and I’m looking forward to more. Great rich/poor, big city/small town dynamics, lots of internal growth among all the main characters, and their story is sweet. The writing is hilarious and on point—more introspective than most romantic comedies. I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

After reading this story, it is indeed crazy haha. In normal circumstances, I would have gagged or felt disgusted about it, but dang! This one totally cast some spell on me because I surprisingly enjoyed it. My oh my! This book is so good that I think I'm committing a sin lol

What this story is all about? I've read the Random Acts of Hope which was the fourth book of the Random Series and I was totally in love. I acquired the copy of this book, the Random Acts of Crazy for free on Amazon a few months ago and I've been wanting to read it ever since. And yep, the time has finally come. I've been very observant with the story that I accidentally read the sypnosis. Unlike anime or manga, I prefer not to read some spoiler and sypnosis before reading a book and let it surprise me instead. Just with the fact that I loved the fourth book of this series, I was positive that I will like this book too, and abnormally, I did haha.

I love the idea of meeting or should I say picking the hottest hithchiking boy band vocalist butt naked in your way home. My! She doesn't even know that he's the vocalist of her favorite band she's been fangirling ever since. What happened next was really, really, really funny. I can't even suppress my laughter while writing this review, haha.

I don't really want to drop some spoiler but it's hard not to in this story, so please bear with me hehe.

After picking the naked hitchhiking guy on her way home, the attraction was too unbearable for the both of them. But dang! I guess destiny doesn't want them to do "it" lol. It was even funnier when they were caught in the act with her mall security guard ex-boyfriend, haha lol.

Oh man! Julia Kent really knows how to make you laugh so hard. The scene drags on further until they reached her place and finally did "it" without any further delay. And btw, have I mentioned the awkward meeting with her mother while he's almost as naked as the day he was born? Haha

Well, all happened so hot until his friend Joe which is also one of his band mates fetch him the next morning. It's obvious she's really into him too, and I have to take what she said that he's as perfect as a god lol. Darla and Joe's first meeting wasn't that pleasant as he's been a jerk to her about being poor and all. That actually ticked me off and I really wanted to kick his balls for it. But what happened next was hilarious.

I thought the part where Trevor and Darla who was caught in the act by her ex which is a security guard pointing a shot gun at him was the funniest, but nah! The one with the chicken totally won the most funniest scene ever! I don't want to elaborate more, where's the fun in that eh? So I'll just give you a clue and that's Mavis Connor haha.

All were explained eventually, on what happened to Trevor and how he came to Ohio which was so far away from Massachusetts. It's been pretty obvious too that Trevor is so attracted to Darla but what really surprises me a bit was how the then douche Joe became attracted to her too as well as she to them, to the both of them actually. You thought that's it? Trevor saw Joe and Darla kissed. My! I thought there's going to be some punching scene but surprisingly it didn't happened. Actually, it went well that Trevor even sang a song he wrote about her in the bar's open mic. My! The lyrics was really sweet!

After the funny story telling on what happened to Trevor after being high as fck for eating all those drugs, the most awkward thing happened. My! I really don't want to spoil or disappoint some of you who wanted to try this story but I think I've got to drop this major spoiler. I'm not really sure, but I guess I'm going to do it? Haha.

Well, this story includes threesome. My! Very very bad and quite sinful eh? But man! I have to say that it was the hottest as in hottest scene I've read so far. Surprisingly, it wasn't lewd like what I expect it would be. I dunno, it's just so passionate and oh so hot. My, thinking about it still affects me haha. Imagine two hot guys worshiping you? My! That's really a dream come true.

The ending will absolutely leave you guessing as it's one of those open endings, no idea who between the two she'll choose. Man! I guess they're both sharing her? Haha. Trevor appearing nude again to you was one thing, but Joe? The almost awkward silent type Adonis without any clothes off in the side of the road with only a guitar? Man! That's already too much of an ending isn't it? Haha.

For the main characters, I really like Darla. No BS, just original. I love how she pointed out to them especially to Joe how they're parents are always in their noses when obviously they're two consenting adults, they're effing twenty two years old! I also love how relatable her character and how courageous she was of taking good care of her disabled mother that even though she's kind of living a wasteful life in that cramp province. But I'm happy that in the end, all turned out great especially to her bestfriend Jane.

Trevor on the other hand was hot as heck. Man! Even without the introduction, I'm already eyeing him. I love musicians especially those who can sing and play a guitar at the same time. I also love how understanding he was especially that he grew up, not maybe that rich but not poor either, when he found out where Darla is living and why she's driving such a car.

And lastly, Joe. My! I never thought that "good son" could do such thing. My oh my! I'm not really sure what to think of him and Trevor after that threesome scene and man! They are genuinely liking the same girl and willing to share her. Like huh? Well, I like Joe, I like his description especially when Darla said he finally kissed a god lol. But even after all that, I'm still for team Trevor, haha. He doesn't just have a sexy name but I love a guy with a little streak of bad boy in him.

I'm not really sure what made me to like to story, was it because of the story, the threesome (good Lord no! Haha), or was it the numerous times this book made me laugh. Honestly I'm still torn whether to give this one a 3 star or 4star. But heck, I'm giving it 4 stars and that's it!

This story was not really perfect or wasn't that good compared to the fourth book as it was inferior when it comes to depth but it really entertained me. It has threesome scene I know, but it didn't made me feel violated or was disgusted. I dunno how the author did that, but this story was incredibly well written. This story was narrated alternately from the main characters so you won't totally felt left out. Many of you might have known that I'm a dialogue reader so it wasn't really a surprise when I was skipping some parts while reading this story, but that doesn't mean it was boring. Actually, it's far from one.

If you want something that will both give you sexy and funny read, then Random Acts of Crazy is absolutely perfect for you. It's the first book of the Random Series but you can absolutely read it standalone.

Edit: I just found out there's some sort of continuation of Darla, Trevor and Joe's story. My! It's book 3 book 5, and book 7 of the Random Series and I can't really, really, really wait to get my very own copies!

I was able to snag this book for free (full disclosure) and was reading it for pleasure, but also to analyze various themes in the romance genre (which this book was placed in.) The good stuff - the author writes very sparkly, funny dialogue and that's a huge strength of hers.as far as I can tell. She sets the scene in small town Ohio very well - you can see the rundown aspect of her main heroine's life there.

The plot felt very herky-jerky. I was going with the main plot from the beginning of the book - girl meets strange, naked guy on the side of the road - hilarity and hijinks and some lovin' ensue - and then she threw in his buddy. So now we've got a weird threesome and then . . . it gets all sexual and metaphysical . . . and I stopped believing it about then. The band sub-plot, too, was . . . huh? I mean really - what are the odds of these two meeting up? None. Yet . . .

I'm no prude and if you want to write a threesome love story - fine. It didn't even hint at that, though, and our heroine really doesn't seem like she'd be the type the second guy would even sneeze at. Except maybe to order more coffee from - he's a big snob (the first guy isn't, though), so it was completely unbelievable that they'd have this huge sexual connection.

I know this is the first book in a series (no doubt why it was a teaser for the next books and free) - but I'm not inclined to pay money for more of a "I'm in the band" threesome story. I found it rather boring - now, again, to be fair, I'm older and I've been through sexual experimentation and all that, so I am probably not the best person to be excited by this.

I suppose I might actually consider this closer to YA literature because the coming of age theme is throughout and everybody is rebelling against their mom and dad and circumstances. Plenty of references to their behavior pissing off the parents. And that, again, is rather boring to me.

So you've been forewarned - it's a fun read, and she can set the scene and write some fun dialogue, but the story is . . . not that compelling.

An excellent book. The surface plot of romance and comedy is excellent then there is the deeper of living a less stressed life. Only a few days after reading did I realize the excellent life lessons. Living and loving and acceptance of one’s place in the world. Excellent excellent story.

I think that there is no higher praise for a book than to be included in my list of books that I will read again and again. This is definitely one of those books.

I was pulled in from the first sentence. I love a book that captures my imagination from the start. When I reached my first break I had finished 15% of the book. At that point I felt like even if the rest of the book was awful it was worth reading for how much I enjoyed the beginning. Of course, the rest of the book was as great as the beginning.

Darla is bold, brave, loyal, funny and strong. Trevor and Joe are men who are great friends and have their own strengths. They're down to earth, patient, insightful, attentive, respectful and romantic.

It's a book that has well developed main and supporting characters. Their world is nicely crafted. The relationships are complicated and vary from loving to toxic. Watching the development of Darla's relationships with the guys is intriguing and includes plenty of steam. I can hardly wait to see them in upcoming books.

I need to wrap up this review so I can start the next book in the series! I recommend this book to everyone looking for a good read.

To Julia Kent, thanks for making this book available to KU readers.

Having read a a few of the reviews -- after reading the book, I have to agree with the five-star ratings and enthusiasm. You will laugh, you will cry -- the descriptions of hard-scrabble poverty are truly moving -- Darla, trying to find her life outside the hellhole fate has dealt her, two touching, talented and beautiful young lads trying to avoid the life their parents are enthusiastically herding them towards. Really beautifully told story. Read it, you'll like it!!

For me it was a love story building up between two people who intrinsically are same, alone, and suddenly it changes into some sex maniacs, a threesome.....a turn off for me. There were plenty random acts already and if there was need for few more than they could have been woven in a different manner.

3.0 out of 5 stars j'ai eu du mal à accrocher...
Reviewed in France on January 14, 2014
