Living under the prophecy that he is the Second Son, born to die by pride, Rabin learns that proud or humble, everybody dies.

Hundreds of miles south, Marli Lavare fought different battles as she grew up to become the only woman to graduate from the Macan Academy in Del Sur City. Her work with the Del Sur Military-- as she strives to complete an apprenticeship that will earn her the rare and coveted title of medical doctora -- throws her into direct conflict with Rabin, now a feared martial master with the nickname of the Red Jaguar of the North. To Marli, her once betrothed seems a deadly agent of chaos.

As Marli struggles for control, she begins to understand what Rabin learned early -- some gates need breaking. Rabin recognizes her as his betrothed and perhaps, an even bigger agent of chaos than he is. If the Goddess loves or hates a gatebreaker, both Marli and Rabin first need to learn to love themselves.

ML Katz started reading Dick and Jane on a train and never looked back. She is a lover of good examples of almost all genres of fiction, but is particularly attached to speculative works. She believes that an emotional connection with readers transcends genre. That may be why Ms. Katz's own favorites range from Pride & Prejudice to Lord of The Rings to Lonesome Dove to Scarpetta novels.

This may also be one reason why her books are hard to classify, but seem to be enjoyed by readers of many different types of books.

Now, let me start off by saying that I've never considered myself to be “into” speculative fiction or fantasy or any of the other related genres. From the time I was a preteen, I had kind of made up my mind that those genres just weren't for me. You know - “Meh. Speculative fiction.” And since then, I've pretty much avoided books, movies and television shows written in that style. Then, I ran into M.L. Katz on Facebook, and – I'll be frank here – the author was so nice, I relented and thought, “OK, I'll buy just one book and give it a read.” What I found was not only is ML Katz an amazing writer both stylistically and in terms of storytelling, but the books are incredibly riveting, drawing you from one page to another so you just can't put them down. Truly, I was prepared not to really like them (apologies to ML Katz) because, again, I had blinders on with regard to this genre, and I thought, “Nope, I've been down the speculative fiction road before; it's just not my thing.” But I've found these books to be so engaging, I spent all my spare time reading Rise of the Gatebreakers – time when I should have been working, doing housework and, yes, even time I should have been spending with my family. Because it's that good. So if you've been thinking speculative fiction isn't your cup of tea, or you've already got a backlog of unread books on your reader or phone, or you're too busy, or blah, blah, blah – stop. This book is worthy of your time and your money, so get over yourself already and download it. And check out the author's other books while you're at it!

Epic Fantasy Adventure. It says that across the top of every page next to the title. Epic. Fantasy. Adventure. Do you know what an antonym of epic is? Short story. I'm serious. Do you know what you have here in this book? A short story. A story that, didn't even really begin before it ended. A lot of background was shoved at you through character's either talking or thinking about it, but the story just did not feel set up. I was curious, I wanted to get to the bit where the story took off and I was swept away on a grand adventure, but it never happened. I want to say that the characters are well developed, but no, they aren't. It got a bit exciting at the end. I thought Finally, something is going to happen ... and it ended. The only thing going for this book is that the lore to this world is different. I can't really say if the lore makes sense because the story was short and I didn't get much feel for it. Will I be on the look out for the other books in this series? Probably not. I feel like I was lied to.

I love epic fantasy series' that pull me through a host of novels, keeping me invested in a story line and a repeating cast of characters. I just finished reading author M.L. Katz' "Rise of the Gatebreakers" and it promises to be just one of those sorts of series. The story of Rabin and Marli, who have known each other since they were little. In fact, they were betrothed but life separated them and they went in very different directions with a decade-long war and other conflicts in their land. Coming together again as adults and seemingly at odds with each other, the story gets interesting as they have the chance to bond again and join forces for a greater good. A very well written and engaging fantasy read - can't wait for part 2.

Just too many grammatical and spelling errors and wrong use of words. All 3 books need to be edited properly as a good story got ruined because it was too hard to understand with multiple mistakes in every chapter. For example care instead of compare and so many words left out. Very sad.

I am a fussy reader. I read the back cover and then buy it. Many I get to page three and put down, rarely to be picked up again. They bore me that quickly or the plot is so thin that you write the book as you read it. The Gatekeepers is not like those books. It was captivating from the very first word. The characters were well developed and personable. The story unfolded at the perfect pace and I was both sad and excited when I came to the end. Mrs Katz... put down what you are doing and work on this project. I'd like more... much more.

A Masterful Introduction to an Epic Series

This is an enthralling introduction to what promises to be an epic series. I loved the characters and how they interacted with one another. I loved the surprising, budding romance that caught me unaware. I loved that chivalry isn't dead after all -- at least not in the Known Lands. If you enjoy fast-paced adventure, complex characters, chivalry, suspense and romance, you're going to love "Rise of the Gatebreakers" -- a new series that incorporates them all fluently.

This is a satisfying story -- skillfully done -- that easily carries you along to the end and leaves you longing for more. You'll anxiously await the next installment.
