Rana Joon and the One and Only Now Kindle Edition

“A breath of fresh air and punch to the gut all rolled into one.” —Adib Khorram, award-winning author of Darius the Great Is Not Okay

This “lyrical” (Kirkus Reviews) coming-of-age novel for fans of Darius the Great Is Not Okay and On the Come Up, set in Southern California in 1996, follows a teen who wants to honor her deceased friend’s legacy by entering a rap contest.

Perfect Iranian girls are straight A students, always polite, and grow up to marry respectable Iranian boys. But it’s the San Fernando Valley in 1996, and Rana Joon is far from perfect—she smokes weed and loves Tupac, and she has a secret: she likes girls.

As if that weren’t enough, her best friend, Louie—the one who knew her secret and encouraged her to live in the moment—died almost a year ago, and she’s still having trouble processing her grief. To honor him, Rana enters the rap battle he dreamed of competing in, even though she’s terrified of public speaking.

But the clock is ticking. With the battle getting closer every day, she can’t decide whether to use one of Louie’s pieces or her own poetry, her family is coming apart, and she might even be falling in love. To get herself to the stage and fulfill her promise before her senior year ends, Rana will have to learn to speak her truth and live in the one and only now.

Could not put this book down. Rana Joon the main character is a gem- smart, funny, thoughtful, irreverent. Her friends were all perfectly developed, each equally quirky and interesting. Brings up gender, culture & sexuality and coming of age among other things. Thought provoking & compelling. Main plot & sub plots equally interesting. Two thumbs way up! Hope there’s more to come!

I couldn’t put this book down! This book will take you deep into the life of Rana Joon, and the author, Shideh Etaat, has a way of pulling you in with every word. I highly recommend this book if you’re needing a reminder of how to love. It provides a new way of looking at connection, grief and relationships. Also, the social awareness in this story is unapologetic and seamless. The way the author weaves Hip-Hop culture into the story is also very validating. I’ve never read anything like Rana Joon. It is an absolute must read for all ages and all people!

Great story of a young girl battling numerous social pressures (being an immigrant daughter / being gay / grief of losing a friend/ desire to live up to her potential as a singer). I think anyone who grew up in the 90’s can relate to this story and it’s an easy read!

I loved the 90’s nostalgia and coming-of-age narrative. It took a few chapters to really convince me to keep going, but in the end both the journey and the conclusion were satisfying.

What an amazing book! Heart wrenching and heart warming. Soulful and sad and life affirming. A great read for young adults, their caregivers, teachers, or anyone who once was a young adult. You’ll want to buy two copies- one for yourself and one to give as a gift.

Rana joon is a profound protagonist. She reminds me of many eighteen year old beloveds who are poets, truth seekers and tellers, willing to get past cultural expectations of their lives to find their own way.

This is a tender story, and one that embraces us in ways I can not fully articulate without giving spoilers. I find it overflowing with so many admirable choices, themes, characters and inclusions.

It is a complex story told with deftness and clarity. What I adore most about this book are the poetic verses (repeated references to Audre Lorde). Those of us ready for intersectional layered storytelling will find this a compelling read.

Those who are invested in narrow notions of what it means to be Iranian girls, will struggle with this story. Those who aren’t able to digest unfiltered communication among young folks, will also struggle with this book. I recommend reading the back cover/ synopsis carefully before making assumptions about what this book is or is not about.

I am grateful to the press for my advance copy. My recommendation is honest.

I had heard about this book via Book Riot’s queer emails and was very intrigued. Being a woman who grew up in the 90s I was curious to read something about a teenager in this time period attempting to come out. Rana’s mother definitely got on my nerves for a good percentage of the novel yet the characters are all varied and complex in their own ways. I loved Rana’s determination to open herself up and live in her truth. Especially dealing with the grief of losing a close friend so early in life. This certainly changes a person. All in all I enjoyed this book and was a bit sad when it was over because I wanted to see more of Rana and learn more about Persian culture.

This book is proof that YA can deal with complex topics--perhaps even better than a lot of adult books can.

Rana Joon and the One and Only Now is beautifully written--lyrical and full of descriptions that evoke the feeling of the moment, but not in a way that feels pretentious. Rana feels so real you could reach out and touch her, and you feel everything she feels as she processes the loss of her friend and her relationships through her poetry.

A highly touching read!
