Great monitor, with a few glaring issues
    4 Stars
Great monitor, with a few glaring issues
I'm a gamer and a software engineer, so I'll format this review in three areas (1) gaming, (2) productivity, and (3) issues I faced and how I fixed them.1 Gaming: This is an amazing panel for gaming. Keep in mind, I prefer campaign based shooters, RTS games, and action / adventure games. I don't care for competitive shooters - so I'm not interested in a 3000hz 720p gaming monitor. To say this monitor provides an immersive gaming experience is an understatement. I'm coming from a 21:9 Acer Predator x34, which is quite an immersive experience, and this is almost ridiculous.G-Sync worked with my 2080TI out of the box and I havent experienced any significant screen tearing once I turned on the setting "Enable for windowed and full screen mode" (important if you play games with the borderless setting). HDR is also noticeably significant in games that support it. I tested it pretty throroughly in Shadow of the Tomb RAs far as game support for the 32:9 aspect ratio - you should know what you're getting yourself into before you purchase a monitor like this. So far I've tested Metro Exodus, Squad, GTA V, Escape from Tarkov, Anno 1800, Titanfall 2, Dishonered 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and a few other games on the monitor and almost all of them have worked close to flawlessly after some minor tweaking with the resolution / refresh rate / FOV and VSync settings. There will be occasional visual glitches with a scope or FOV clipping, but its dependent on the game. You can check sites like wsgf.org or reddit to see if a particular game supports the aspect ratio and there's always tools like flawless widescreen. There are games I know for sure that struggle with this aspect ratio: any Bethesda game (i.e. Elders Scrolls, Fallout, etc) many older ubisoft games, Ace Combat 7 and MGS5, earlier Mass Effect Games, etc.Overall, if you're the type of gamer that wants a super immersive experience, I would recommend it.2) Productivity: This one is a bit of a tougher sell, which is ironic because this whole solution is billed as a productivity boon. I should note: The productivity gains you get from this monitor are dependent on your OS and how many computers you have. If you JUST have a single windows computer (at the time of writing) and are doing something like video editing, this solution will be flawless for you.I however, program on a mac and do some work on a PC, and have some gripes about the solution, considering the price point. Firstly, I had issues setting up my mac (see issues section).Secondly, the included KVM solution is not ideal. One thing I will say, follow the manual to set up the KVM switch as your user defined preference if you will be using this solution, as it will require only 3 clicks of the OSD menu to switch between your USBC solution and your USB3 "UP" cable, rather then the 10 clicks if you go into the regular OSD menu. Also I have a wireless USB keboard that simply does not work with the monitors rear USB3 ports at all. I'll probably use a phsyical kensington USB3 kvm switch for my mouse / keyboard that has a physical single switch solution. A single click or software solution for the KVM switch and a side port that works with wireless keyboard / mice would have been great, and I shouldn't need to buy a $100 accessory to bypass one of the monitors main features (even if this monitor remains a great deal if you can buy it on sale like I did). Finally, there is no provided cable management solution included in the monitor / stand (literally a simple bar in the bottom section I could tuck my cables into would be ideal). When you have a DisplayPort, 2 HDMI, USB for mouse and keyboard, external speakers, and the USB C plugged in underneath the monitor is a mess. I will probably rectify this with some kind of hack involving adhesive cable tie mounts in the future.I will say though, with all of the screen space you have once you get everything working, I would never go back to a dual monitor solution again.3) Problems / solutions:Mac OS / macbook resolution support: The big one is what other reviewers have already mentioned - the native resolution of the monitor is not supported by Mac OS currently. Let me be clear: If you think this is phillips' problem, you are a fool. You should have read the reviews before you purchased, and Apple is notoriously bad at supporting exotic resolutions (that they themselves didn't create). This was true when I got a 21:9 2560 x 1080 monitor in 2010, and it's true today. Hopefully in the next few months Apple will issue and update that fixes this. For now, you have to use a solution like SwitchResX (which I already had a copy of so no extra cost to me, but consider the $16 license as included in the price of the monitor if you are buying for Mac OS).Webcam: This doesn't work at all for me in Windows over DisplayPort / USB3 Up connection. I would like to say that I reached out to phillips' customer support, but I cant find their customer support on their product page. I could have a defective unit. I personally, don't care as I use a Logitech 4k webcam and would never use the included webcam in a million years. However, it is one of the things keeping me from giving this product 5 stars at the moment.

Don't get me wrong... This is a gorgeous super ultra wide 49" monitor with all the bells and whistles you could possibly get on a monitor: decent speakers, built-in webcam (decent quality though working on and off), HDR 400, and a very curved display (1800mm radius of curvature) that wraps around you nicely.

First things first, I never managed to get the advertised 60Hz refresh rate out of this monitor. It's hooked up to a Lenovo P1 workstation laptop with NVIDIA Quadro P2000. This VGA in theory is capable of handling four 5120x2880 displays @ 60Hz according to the datasheet. I have this and a Dell U4919DW attached to the Lenovo (using the 2 Thunderbolt ports on the laptop) simultaneously and no issues other than the Philips can't do any better than 30Hz.

I have tried the Philips alone and with HDMI as well as the USB C cable (both original cables that came in the box) and yet nothing better than a 30Hz refresh rate.

I have been trying the Philips monitor customer service through emails and phone for the past week having always been promised to be called back by their technician(s) and here I am still waiting for that one call on a Friday evening! before a long weekend.

    Radius of Curvature
This might be a personal preference and only applies if you are thinking of doing office tasks like using spreadsheets or a design software like AutoCad. This monitor has an 1800mm radius of curvature (i.e. it's very curved) and even though the curve looks very nice to the eyes if watching a video or surfing the web, once you get to the productivity side of the business (like using AutoCad) all the horizontal lines appear so curved to the eye that it becomes a constant mental challenge to convince yourself that those are in fact, straight lines.

Another issue that I noticed and were not able to see mentioned elsewhere in reviews, is the fact that the curve is not a continuous simple curve but rather a deep curve in the center (3/4 of the screen width) and becomes a tangent on both sides towards the edges. This adds to the annoyance imposed to the eyes and mind since horizontal lines (if long enough to go across the screen) are seen/ as very curved in the center and almost flat towards the edges of the display. I don't know about reasons (or manufacturing limitations) behind this, but believe this type of curvature is better to be left to gaming monitors if not avoided all in all.

The camera worked perfectly fine the first time I connected the monitor to the computer but has been working on and off since and does not get detected by Windows after a boot for most of the times. The quality of the camera is mediocre at best and you are probably better off with most other stand alone webcams or in my case the built-in laptop camera.

The speakers are of decent quality but nothing special about them other than the convenience of having an extra set of speakers on your desk.

Right now I'm waiting on the seller to issue a return approval to send this back. You might be able to get the 60Hz refresh rate out of this depending on what machine and VGA you are hooking this up to but the fact about the nonuniform curvature is there to stay after you've noticed it for the first time.
