- Stunning monitor, bright, crystal clear, works just like any other monitor attached to a Windows machine
- For laptop users with a USB C connector and power source, this will act like a hub, charge your laptop and transmit video/ethernet/USB via your single USB C cable (you'll need to supply a quality cable, not just a charge cable)
- Sound built in
Cons:
- Like multiple reviewers the camera doesn't seem to operate well. It will come on and then it freezes and you can never get it going again without at least a reboot. Unusable.
- Heavy
This is a big monitor, four feet of solid screen in front on any desk really fills your field of view. I can't say I feel "immersed", it might be because I have the monitor pushed back or it might be because the curve while useful, is pretty gentle.
Relatively easy to connect to my laptop; a couple of gotcha's; the USB default setting is to power down the USB ports when the monitor goes into power save mode (you can override that in the monitor settings), also the USB ports are set to USB 2.0 by default. The result was at USB 2.0 it didn't recognize my wireless keyboard, and then once I fixed that it disconnected the keyboard when the monitor went to sleep. Both quick fixes.
Unless you want a ridiculously HUGE monitor stand on your desk you might want to look at a monitor arm -- there are very few that are rated to handle the weight of this monitor. WALI Single Monitor Gas Spring Desk Mount Heavy Duty worked fine for me; I had to crank the gas arm adjustment quite a few turns but it stiffened up nicely and now the monitor can be adjusted with a single touch of a finger.
Sound is acceptable, and the software you can download from Philips gives you at least basic ability to modfy the brightness through an on screen control rather than endless monitor menus. It's likely you'll want to adjust the brightness down, this is just a bright monitor, but I was able to get it to an acceptable level (though I reduced it almost all the way to the minimum).
With a USB C cable this is a one connection to your laptop (or PC) monitor, you have a limited number of ports on the monitor (to make it more aesthetically pleasing you might want to get a hub at (or below) desktop level to hide cords -- this could look silly having 3 or 5 cords hanging from the bottom of the monitor. I find that the USB C cable can be a little too easily pulled out, so the less hanging cables the better.
Video playback (like youtube) seems problematic, at least when I have the monitor set to it's maximum resolution. I had to turn off HDR playback and go down to 480p (which still, however, looked stunningly like high def). This is likely due to my video card in my laptop not being very high grade -- frankly, I'm happy enough that it runs this monitor without any noticeable delays or artifacts (Intel UHD 620 with some memory on board).
Totally satisfied with this purchase and the price, hopefully they'll fix the camera drivers (in the meantime I used a plug-into-the-usb-hub fingerprint reader for Windows Hello).
1. Cable Routing - there is no way provided to hide the cables dropping off the back of the display. I will be moving it to a monitor arm which has cable routing and that should help a bit.
2. Navigating the Menus - the unit did not come with remote as it said in the packaging and the vendor says they do not supply it. So setting things up on the display are not so easy as the menus are touchy and the monitor response time is slow when affecting changes.
Overall image quality good for my work. Gaming ok. Overall, and this is not unique to Philips, the screens are just too darned bright, and often impossible to dim.'
I am happy in general with this display and the price I paid.
Top reviews from other countries
First things first, I never managed to get the advertised 60Hz refresh rate out of this monitor. It's hooked up to a Lenovo P1 workstation laptop with NVIDIA Quadro P2000. This VGA in theory is capable of handling four 5120x2880 displays @ 60Hz according to the datasheet. I have this and a Dell U4919DW attached to the Lenovo (using the 2 Thunderbolt ports on the laptop) simultaneously and no issues other than the Philips can't do any better than 30Hz.
I have tried the Philips alone and with HDMI as well as the USB C cable (both original cables that came in the box) and yet nothing better than a 30Hz refresh rate.
I have been trying the Philips monitor customer service through emails and phone for the past week having always been promised to be called back by their technician(s) and here I am still waiting for that one call on a Friday evening! before a long weekend.
Radius of Curvature
This might be a personal preference and only applies if you are thinking of doing office tasks like using spreadsheets or a design software like AutoCad. This monitor has an 1800mm radius of curvature (i.e. it's very curved) and even though the curve looks very nice to the eyes if watching a video or surfing the web, once you get to the productivity side of the business (like using AutoCad) all the horizontal lines appear so curved to the eye that it becomes a constant mental challenge to convince yourself that those are in fact, straight lines.
Another issue that I noticed and were not able to see mentioned elsewhere in reviews, is the fact that the curve is not a continuous simple curve but rather a deep curve in the center (3/4 of the screen width) and becomes a tangent on both sides towards the edges. This adds to the annoyance imposed to the eyes and mind since horizontal lines (if long enough to go across the screen) are seen/ as very curved in the center and almost flat towards the edges of the display. I don't know about reasons (or manufacturing limitations) behind this, but believe this type of curvature is better to be left to gaming monitors if not avoided all in all.
The camera worked perfectly fine the first time I connected the monitor to the computer but has been working on and off since and does not get detected by Windows after a boot for most of the times. The quality of the camera is mediocre at best and you are probably better off with most other stand alone webcams or in my case the built-in laptop camera.
The speakers are of decent quality but nothing special about them other than the convenience of having an extra set of speakers on your desk.
Right now I'm waiting on the seller to issue a return approval to send this back. You might be able to get the 60Hz refresh rate out of this depending on what machine and VGA you are hooking this up to but the fact about the nonuniform curvature is there to stay after you've noticed it for the first time.

UPDATE: I lowered the star from 2 to 1 after Philips actually rejected my poor review, LOL
