4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 117 ratings

A murdered drag queen. Dozens of suspects. One determined detective.
Book 7 in the popular Lessons in Murder series, by award-winning, best-selling author Edale Lane

Lieutenant Detective Jenna Ferrari excels at catching criminals, and while she’s come a long way toward taming her temper—thanks to her loving partner, Dr. Miranda McLeod—this case may get the better of her. While Jenna and Randi are in the audience of a regional drag competition, the contestant favored to win is being murdered backstage.

Deciding she needs a man on the inside to really find out what’s going on, Jenna sends a member of her team undercover as the murdered queen’s replacement. Will he reveal the killer or long-concealed truths about himself?

Who killed the queen? Was it a nasty anti-LGBTQ protestor, a homophobic pastor, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, another competitor, or someone nobody suspects?

Enter the fabulous world of drag in this established-couple, sapphic, queer-inclusive whodunit mystery novel.

Edale Lane proves once again that she is a masterful storyteller and an excellent mystery writer. In book 7 of the Lessons in Murder series, one of the most successful competitors in Drag Queen Competitions is murdered in her dressing room.
Jenna and Randi, sharing a rare night out, happen to be in the audience prior to the competition. Jenna calls her team together and the search for the murderer begins. Edale Lane leads us through the investigation with interesting clues and intrigue. Uncovering secrets and throwing in a surprise revelation about a member of Jenna's team.
The love story between Jenna and Randi continues with them living together but not without a few hiccups along the way. It soon becomes apparent that Randi is the rock that anchors Jenna on so many levels. Could there be a marriage in their future? No review would be complete without mentioning Byron, the dog, who played a role in book 3 and Bandit the cat who no doubt has decided to take charge of "his" household. Another wonderful story to add to the series.

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the last ones can't wait to read the next book. I recommend this series

These books are scarily realistic and timely in the issues brought out and the ignorance and stupidity that is so in fashion these days, at least among the vocal, and hopefully, the minority. Well written and fun to read, although another sad story of a life cut short.

I read an Advance Copy and this is, in my opinion, Edale Lane’s best book yet! It is the seventh in the “Lessons in Murder” series but is completely enjoyable as a stand-alone story.

There is a murder during one of the biggest, most important Drag competitions in the Southeast - being held in Roanoke, VA.

Question is - who’s responsible? Was it one of the crazy protesters outside? Was it someone with a grudge against one of the queens? Maybe one of the queens trying to eliminate a competitor?

These are some of the questions Detective Ferrari and her team must answer - but without causing too much interruption in the show - because the show must go on - right?

There are many suspects, more possible motives, and several twists along the way - even a cop who goes undercover as a Drag Queen.

The characters are well developed and the sub-plots make the story even better. I didn’t want to put this one down until I reached the end!

I loved getting to know more about "drag queens" and much of what's involved in drag contests. Of course there's the police procedural part too, but the development of character is important in that part as well. Well written, well plotted, and just a good story.

There will never be too many books about Jenna and Randi. Queen of Murders was a wonderful murder mystery story. I enjoyed the introduction of drag queen Frita Leeve as well as the other characters. I hope we see more of Ethan and Mario in future books in the Lessons in Murder series.

Not a big fan of this writer but the first book was good enough. Each book since has seemed to worsen a little bit and to me this was the least engaging yet. The topic and info have promise but the writing just fails to engage.

Edale Lane’s latest, “Queen of Murder” addresses a crime against a community that’s currently suffering intensified, generalized hate and discrimination, drag queens. When a popular and successful queen is murdered while Detective Jenna Ferrari and her professor girlfriend, Randi, are sitting in the audience, Ferrari begins a determined, will-not-fail investigation. Dozens of suspects don’t deter Ferrari and her team! Lane unfolds this engaging and entertaining timely mystery with humor, honesty, and sensitivity. I received an ARC copy, and really enjoyed “Queen of Murder” - and this is my honest review! Read it! Enjoy it! Recommend it! 😊

Wow, what an interesting story and I have loved reading every book in this series. The main characters are so well written and their evolving relationship is done so well. Really hope there are more in the works for Jenna and Randi. Recommended reading.
