Excellent head lamp for the price.
The lamp is powerful, including the red which is very useful.
I won't need all eight modes of operation but I can see how they can be useful.
For the records: two buttons on top, each cycling through its own list of modes. pressing a button when in a mode of the other switches to the first mode of the list of the button pressed.
Right button
1 - White spot light, powerful
2 - White spot light, dimmer
3 - White flood light, powerful
4 - White flood light, dimmer
5 - Red flood light, powerful
6 - Red flood light, powerful and blinking
Left button: the light is switched on or off based on a proximity sensor, probably IR
7 - White spot light, powerful - controlled by sensor
8 - White spot light, dimmer - controlled by sensor
When in mode 7 or 8 there is a green LED on the right side of the lamp to indicate you are in one of the sensor controlled modes.
When charging (simple usual micro USB cable and 5V) or power on, the lamps displays its battery level on four blue LEDs on the left of the lamp.
What I use the most:
Mostly the red flood light as it allows me hiking at night without killing my night vision when I underestimate the time it will take to come back.
Also the white flood light when working under the sink ;)
What I would improve:
- The stiffness of the click that holds the lamp at an angle on the forehead: it is a little wimpy and stepping heavily or tripping is sometimes enough to change the angle - certainly not a show stopper.
- Add a dimmer red flood light to the right button list, to save energy.
- Switch the battery level indicator off after a few seconds after pressing any button as it drains the battery and the blue LEDs kill the night vision.
- I would have loved having a powerful red flood light controlled by the sensor, but I suspect the red light interferes with the sensor. Oh, well. Plus see below.
- Change the SW so that when the user has left the headlamp lit in a certain mode for more than about 30s or a minute, a press of the button toggles the light on and off without changing mode. I have another headlamp that works like that and it is very convenient.
- This above can be somewhat achieved by using the sensor-controlled modes, which I find useful in qualified circumstances. However a branch at head level while you are hiking, raising a book or a map to read it etc. will toggle the lamp.
In the end since they are already willing to put two buttons, I would rather have one button to select the mode and one to switch the light on or off. Then they could dispense of the green mode indicator.
I have not tested its IP rating - I keep it out of the rain as much as possible.
Bottom line, still one of the best small headlamps I have had.
