Replaced my slightly older Apex Pro TKL, this is not the same quality
I ordered this simply to utilize a USB-C cable with a coiled cable with OLED aesthetic. I assumed that since this keyboard is newer, it would possess better components. I was sorely mistaken.The switches which claim to be identical are not. The new switches feel roughly 10% firmer. They also sound noticeably louder and "clacky". They basically sound cheaper. The RGB brightness on the keys itself appear 5-10% dimmer than the older board, even after triple checking that I had it set to 100% brightness. The OLED on this newer keyboard is also much dimmer than the older keyboard, about 10% dimmer on full brightness. The OLED and RGB dimness were by far the most noticeable to me.The keyboard materials are also much cheaper. The older Apex Pro TKL utilized a full aluminum top plate. The older design feels heavier. This new design utilizes a smaller (non-curved) aluminum piece, so they saved money on manufacturing but provided a cheaper quality. The sides and bottom of the keyboard are plastic. It should be FULL aluminum in order to provide a decent weight. This keyboard feels lightweight and cheap.The controlling software (Steelseries GG) is terrible. If you don't disable FXAA (on Nvidia GPUs at least) in the Nvidia control panel, the text rendering appears blurry and mushy in Steelseries GG. Adjusting your RGB on multiple Steelseries devices is a nightmare and doesn't contain a 'Save' button specifically on the RGB control screen, therefore you never know if the settings will re-apply after a reboot, which they frequently do not. I have to restart Steelseries GG in order for the RGB to sync constantly. I prefer devices that synchronize the settings to the onboard firmware of the devices, so that I don 't need to keep Steelseries GG running in the background. When you shut down Steelseries GG the RGB goes back to rainbow. This was not always the case. My older Steelseries KB can retain the RGB settings as I move the KB to multiple systems, with no need to even install Steelseries GG to maintain the same RGB pattern. The RGB patterns on this keyboard are not as clean and fluid as the older Apex Pro.The Steelseries GG software is also now very invasive. It defaults to record all mouse and keyboard presses as well as monitor your game data. You can disable this but by default it is set to ON for several invasive actions. It also is a resource hog and buggy, so it can crash games or applications by attempting to record the data.If you decide the run a GIF on the OLED you cannot utilize the OLED for any informational purposes, you must choose SOLELY running a GIF, or using the OLED for data/information, this decision by Steelseries is mind boggling and frustrating.After 5 years of using Steelseries I can no longer recommend this product.
