Pucking Wild: A Reverse Age Gap Hockey Romance (Jacksonville Rays Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 12,249 ratings

My name is Tess Owens and my life is officially on fire. I never thought dancing at my best friend’s wedding would be the match to light the flames. But with one lingering touch, one longing look…and one sneaky caterer holding a camera phone, my almost ex-husband is ready to torch my entire life.

Unwilling to face the heat, I do what I do best: I run. Straight into the arms of Rachel and her team of NHL hockey players. One player stands apart from the rest. Jacksonville Rays star forward Ryan Langley is out with an injury. I get the surprise of my life when he shows up at my door, declaring himself my roommate.

Now I have six weeks to launch a new business. Six weeks to fight for my freedom…all while fighting my growing attraction to this All-American sweetheart with a charming smile and a career on the rise. Did I mention he’s ten years younger than me? Ryan doesn’t need my drama. And we have nothing in common. But it’s getting harder to deny the way he makes me feel. Wild. Fun. Free.

I want to believe him when he says age is just a number. I want to believe that our pasts don’t define us forever. But first I have to stop running. I have to face my fears. With one innocent dance, Ryan Langley helped me start this fire. What if we’re meant to fan these flames? What if, together, we’re meant to burn?

PUCKING WILD is a spicy MF reverse age gap hockey romance with positive plus size and bisexual representation. This is Book Two in the international bestselling Jacksonville Rays Hockey series. The series starts with Rachel’s story, which begins in the spicy prequel novella THAT ONE NIGHT.

“I am the fire that forges the clay into something stronger.”-Tess“A narcissist can’t stand when their victim has attachments outside of them. He wants you to push me away. He wants caring for me and being my friend to be a burden for you—”-TessUmm… So torn on this. It wasn’t fabulous, but it wasn’t bad. It left me wanting more. There was so much with the other players and their wife’s that there were parts that made me think Tess and Ryan were a side story. It is great in books in a series to include others you have met from previous books, this just felt more of a extended anthology. My heart hurts for Tess. How she was cast aside by everyone who was supposed to support her hits hard. No wonder she is a runner. Why would she believe for a second people will love her and hold her up, much less catch her if she falls? It just makes you want to hug her and shield her from all the evil of the world.Oh Ryan. That sweet boy. Having to be the man in his home to help his mom and sister on top of finding a way to do so while battling his own demons is not a fun life. He is doing well and making it happen, but that is a lot on one’s shoulders. Now to why there is a glitch in the system as to why my mind cannot decided to shout “yay” on the rooftops or ask “what the what?” due to this book. There was a lot about the Prices and Poppy and her boys. Yes, Rachel and her boys started this, but this story isn’t about them. Appearances and cameos are expected, but so much of their lives being in this story shouldn’t be Tess’ story. For someone finding her own legs to stand on, their was a lot of focus on the behavioral patterns of the Price men. Rachel, whom is why Tess is in Jacksonville, is hardly in the story when it actually comes to Tess. She is mostly there for her men. That all just felt odd to me.Now we get to Troy. We won’t go full throttle into that awful waste of space, but just focus on when he gives Ryan the TRO. A restraining order was not an option running through my mind. How Troy was talking, how Ryan was panicking, and talks of jail time with the signatures on the paperwork, my mind was going to things like accusations of assault on a puck bunny or his sister or public intoxication leading to resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. That whole scene didn’t make any sense to me. Almost as if something had to be there so this was added as a voice to text while driving to work. When we get to see Tess and Ryan in their element, together or at their careers, thats when you remember how much you love them. Their passion for things that mean something to them is wonderful making them impossibly easy to love. Just wish we had more of that.

Pucking Wild is Book 2 in Emily Rath's Jacksonville Rays series. Book 1, Pucking Around, along with its prequel novella, That One Night, and follow-up novella, Pucking Ever After: Volume 1, have all been top reads for me in 2023, so my expectations for Pucking Wild were quite high going in.

What I expected (and what Rath delivers):

🍒 A fun, flirty, swoony, hockey romance

🍒 Reverse age gap

🍒 A sweet, eager, young puppy MMC

🍒 Positive plus size representation of the FMC

🍒 Spice for days (including toys)!

🍒 A MC leaving a bad marriage behind and finding true love

🍒 #TeamPrice from Pucking Around loving and supporting Tess and Ryan

🍒 Tantalizing glimpses of future Book 3 Pucking Sweet characters

What I *didn't* expect (and what Rath delivers):

🏒 A clear and accurate representation of a secondary character with narcissistic personality disorder

🏒 An often heart-wrenching, but also uplifting portrayal of a recovering complex trauma survivor of narcissistic abuse

🏒 A brutiful "messy but real" depiction of what it looks like for someone to genuinely love a survivor of narcissistic abuse

🏒 More of an intentional focus than would usually be given in a romance novel to consent, clear communication, and checking-in with a sexual partner during intimacy. This rocked my world and is a new k!nk unlocked.

🏒 A sympathetic window into the shame, inadequacy, and feelings of isolation often experienced by a person with a disability and how inaccessibility and lack of accommodations impacts their daily lives

🏒 While reading, I occasionally found myself sceptical that a younger MMC would be so mature, kind, selfless, and unafraid of commitment. Reading Pucking Wild served as a reminder that ageism, generationism, and sexism work both ways.

Thank you, Dr. Rath, for treating these topics with the care they deserve and for delivering such a tender, humorous, spicy, AND thought-provoking read. You exceeded my already lofty expectations.

I am already anxious for Pucking Ever After Vol II and Pucking Sweet, as well as the audiobook versions of Pucking Around and Pucking Wild!

This second book I have been anticipating so much. One for more from Emily and her Jacksonville Ray's, but also I wanted to really know who Tess was. This book was chef kiss. Tess is so freaking amazing, with everything she has ever gone through, to her marriage, and Job, and now everything she is dealing with in Florida. I was just so amazed reading her. Each chapter I fell more in love with her. Then my sweet controlled Ryan, he does not act his age at all, which I was happy to read. Well, other than his obsession with Mario Kart. Lol, he is an old soul that is mesmerized from the moment he meets tess. The lines in this book when they are vulnerable ughgg so good. Loved this book had more plot than the last one for me was more character development. Also, I still get to see my fav prices. And that wedding scene was so good. And ilmari short more up into my top book boyfriends. Emily Wrath, I can tell you that the first book was not a fluke on why it's so loved. I love your writing cannot wait for book 3!

This. Was. So. Good.
I loved the first of the series (why choose is my new obsession). But this story held me captive from the start with two hell of a main characters. The chemistry with Tess and Ryan is scorching. I want Tess to be my spirit animal with her self-confident attitude to sex and pleasure. (I might have learned some things, too.) And let's face it Ryan's level of maturity as 30 years younger than me is out of this world (okay, he is a book boyfriend - so there's that).
The age gap thing was not played in too obvious way. But have to say that golden retriever / in control Ryan was just chef's kiss <3
I mean him saying: " I just want to love you. I want to put you first. I want to see you smile every day and know I'm the reason. I want to be your person. I want to make my home in you, and I want you to make your home in me." Sobbing here!

The story has just a right amount of angst, spice, found family, protectiveness, playfulness and all the freaking feels. And the epilogue is just perfect cherry on top <3 Never cried this hard for sweet HEA ;)

Ps. loved the way the Rachel's family was a big part of this story. And can't wait Poppy's story. Thank you Emily <3

Did I buy a physical copy just to write a review? Yes, yes I did. Hold onto your hats, the Jacksonville Rays are a STEAMY bunch.

So, full disclosure this is not a standalone and I don't believe its advertised as one. Just a heads up. But this is book two in a comical, highly steamy romance series filled with distinct characters, lots and LOTS of kink and some darker narratives. Overall, I liked this book. Tess and Ryan have their own struggles and their relationship was different from those of Pucking Around which I personally appreciated. This story expands on the Rays universe while still paying homage to the cannon narrative that came before it. It's a well written book with moments that made me grin like an idiot and actually LOL. Would recommend for romance readers who want spice but less of an anti-hero dark villian vibe. Ryan is a golden retriever and Tess is a tornado but they are good together.

This book is amazing!!!! All I can say is wow! This one is slight more slow paced compared to the first book but I think that fits Tess and Ryan perfectly, the spice is AMAZING!!!! It has the perfect amount of angst, comedy, fluff and spice! I highly recommend reading Pucking Ever After vol2 to get the extra Tess and Ryan chapters! Over all I know this is going to be a series that I read over and over again!

My, oh my. I do not know how Emily Rath has written such an amazing, and long, book in such a small time. I am SO HERE for the writing style - it is so smooth and unique, so easy for me to read. It flows so well in my thoughts and it comes off as witty and humorous, as well as intelligent and flirty. The character development for both Tess and Ryan in this story - but also Ilmari and other strong characters from the previous books - completely reignite my love for the Jacksonville Rays universe. Emily Rath is a total wizard at writing these hockey romances and I feel so lucky to have found such an amazing author! I loved and cried with the characters in this book, as I did with the others before and most likely will with the next books. Tess and Ryan are so likeable and their characteristics, traits etc are so well developed. I found Tess so relatable, to the extent where this book felt both inspirational and healing to me.

Emily writes with such passion, such extravagant and witty wording and all the positive spirit in the world. I really enjoyed us glimpsing back into the Price family, as well as all the setting up for the books to come. I already love Poppy based on what we have seen of her in this book - and to be honest, would even be more than happy to have a book about Shelby. It is another absolute hit for me - another 5 star read I highly recommend - especially if you love hockey romance, reverse age gap, a kickass, independent female lead and a sweet puppy male lead. The tension and steam was of course perfect in all the right places, too, but the plot and growth of the characters was something entirely incredible on its own as well.

I could go on about this book and praise it forever, truly. Thank-you for sharing Tess' story with us and letting us be a part of this story, Emily! I can't wait to revisit this book and the others in the rays universe again already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful second book in the Jacksonville Rays series
Reviewed in Germany on August 21, 2023
I was anxiously awaiting this book. The first book in the series blew me away and I hoped the second would too and it absolutely did. Emily manages to write characters that are on their journey and beautifully flawed while finding happiness in ways that suit them. You get to know them in a way that feels real. I love all the different kinds of representation of relationships and love and how they never seem forced. Her books are so much more than regular romance . I love how Tess and Ryan's story was so uniquely theirs while still being part of the series. Similar to how I was excited to see some Price family action I'm now excited to catch glimpses of Tess and Ryan in the next book.

Very new to some of the spicy acts I read but I really enjoyed it. I loved how innocent Ryan was but that he could be strong and dominant at the same time. Loved that Tess didn’t run away and see Ryan as too young or immature. Everything played out really well. Really loved the proposal 🥹
