I was able to keep my face comfortable on the bicycle hour after hour with the Buff around my neck. On the cold days, I doubled it up and brought it up to the bottom of my sunglasses and over my ears. It kept my nose and mouth warm and prevented wind from getting under my helmet liner at my ears. On the warmer days, I would pull it up in a single layer when the winds were really gusting or on the cooler descents. It also protected my neck and face from the sun.
A great item. I highly recommend this. I will use it for cycling, hiking, walking, jogging, and many other activities. The merino wool was still warm even with moisture on it from me breathing, and it was also not too hot when it got warmer. The magic of merino wool. Extremely happy with this product so far!
I am knotting, rather than stitching two unit together. This will not interfere with stretch nor comfort.
Pictured is the knotting in process. This will yield a loonngg thin scarf that can be worn as 4-layers of material draped around the neck or doubled as originally intended but twice as thick.
I chose the ‘goes with anything Black’ which was evidently less popular (?) for less $$$ than a meter long Merino Scarf -or- a heavyweight Merino Gaitor.
I am knotting this together using Surgeon’s Knots with Polyester thread that is braided. About $30.00 all in plus some time listening to an Audible book as I mod’ another item from Amazon.
If one is crafty one can have just what you want as you want it assuming you can shop for the component parts and make ‘your’ concept a reality.

After the century I have been using the Buff on a daily basis for winter bike commuting. It's super-warm, but thin so it fits well under my helmet. I wear it every day, usually twisted around as a winter hat with a thicker brim over my ears. The wool keeps me toasty and even though I've done some biking in pretty cold temps already this fall, I've been toasty warm under the helmet. I definitely recommend this product, but if you have a smaller head than I do and want to use the wool Buff as a balaclava I would be careful as it may be too big for that.
Now that winter is coming and I need to prepare to exercise outdoors, I need something that will serve multiple purposes. In the few weeks that I've had the merino wool buff, I've used this as a winter hat to cover my head and ears and I've used this as a balaclava while cycling to keep my nose/face/head/neck warm. The fact that this has so many uses and it's versatile means this will be my go-to accessory when heading out in brutal midwest winters.
It's a great accessory and you can't go wrong with it. Worth the investment.

I mainly use these while snowboarding, as I can adjust which parts of my face to cover. I can pull it to bunch around my neck when I'm not using on my head (but that does get pretty warm).
The wool fabric is unbeatable and I was kicking myself when I lost my old one as they were only $25 when I bought that one. Dont cheap out on nylon, the material is what makes the difference in the cold weather.
I bought 2 because I know I won't find it cheaper than this in the future.
