DECENT SAW / upgrade from 5.5" model / heavier power usage / will need more batteries
Stream of consciousness review:This saw works well... upgraded from the 5.5" Porter-Cable model.I bought a 40 tooth Diablo blade to replace the standard blade... Cuts great, clean, decent power for what it is. Problem I had immediately is the guard getting hung on whatever I was cutting. A simple spring clamp will pinch it securely out of the way until the project is done. I built a simple sled to use to make exact cuts. 1/4" piece of ply on top another piece of 1/2" ply works well and keeps the saw on track. Hard to get an exact cut if just eyeballin' it... Power of the saw is nothing like a corded saw, of course. This thing sucks through batteries twice as fast as its 5.5" little brother Porter-Cable saw.I'm just using the standard 1.3A Porter batteries that come default with the original tool kits. I was going to purchase a larger battery but instead am going to opt for the impact driver that comes with 2 of the 1.3A batteries, charger and the driver... I've been using the drill now for years. Very satisfied overall... but the draw on this larger 6.5" saw just killed one of my 1.3A batteries so - there's that. I'd estimate you can saw about 12 or so 2x3's before the 1.3A battery dies. My batteries are 3 years old though so there's that. The reason I upgraded was I needed the extra inch of blade really... so it was worth it. When this 6.5" saw runs a battery down, I can eject that battery out and run it in the 5.5" saw for a few cuts before that one dies. Just a big difference in the power demand of the motors between the two. The build on the 5.5" is cheaper as well as the deck on the 5.5" just got all janky and wouldn't cut true any longer. The 6.5" is much sturdier overall and definitely heavier. I read comments about users not being able to change the blade. The guard gets in the way a bit but it took me about 45 seconds to install the Diablo 40 tooth blade. Again, well worth the blade upgrade.Height adjustment lever only goes a quarter turn or so from full tight to loose. Gotta be aware of that. The blade cutting relates ok to a line you draw to cut but I'd highly recommend either using a square as a guide or build a simple track out of a couple scraps of plywood. That simple jig I pictured works great. Perfect, square cuts every time.
