Product Description

NH-D15 chromax.black Header

The NH-D15 chromax.black is an all-black version of Noctua’s award-winning flagship model NH-D15 premium-quality quiet CPU cooler. Thanks to the same proven dual-tower heatsink design and NF-A15 PWM fans, it stays true to the NH-D15’s successful formula of rivalling the performance of all-in-one water coolers while maintaining superb quietness of operation. At the same time, the chromax.black version with its black fans and black coated heatsink combines these assets with a sleek stealth look. Topped off with the renowned SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system and Noctua’s enthusiast-grade NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-D15 chromax.black is a deluxe choice for both overclockers and silent enthusiasts who seek an elite-class heatsink that looks just as great as it cools.

6 heatpipe dual-tower design

As compared to conventional single tower heatsinks, the NH-D15’s fine-tuned six heatpipe dual-tower design provides more surface area, better heat-distribution and superior airflow efficiency in dual-fan mode.

Dual NF-A15 140mm fans

The NH-D15 features two of Noctua's premium-class NF-A15 140mm fans. Complying with Noctua's AAO standard and featuring sophisticated aerodynamic design measures such as Flow Acceleration Channels, the NF-A15 has quickly built up a reputation as one of the best 140mm fans on the market.

High RAM compatibility in single fan mode

Thanks to its recessed lower fins, the NH-D15 provides 64mm clearance for tall memory heatsinks in single fan mode, making it compatible with most high-end RAM modules on the market. In dual-fan mode, the NH-D15 should be used with standard-height RAM (up to 32mm).

*In chassis with more than 165mm CPU cooler clearance, the front fan can be moved upwards to make room for memory modules taller than 32mm.

Colour-customisable

Using the optional NA-HC3 and NA-HC4 heatsink covers as well as the NA-SAVP3 anti-vibration pads (available in black, blue, green, red, yellow, white), the NH-D15 chromax.black can be fully customised to fit popular build colour schemes such as black and red or black and white.

Just finished my first PC build and couldn't be happierBuild Sheet will also be a review (same review posted on each item for simplicityCase: NZXT H5 EliteThe case has a wonderful design that is elegant and sleek the air flow is amazing considering the size. This case comes with X2 140MM RGB DUO NZXT Fans and an RGB Controller, over all 5/5 zero issues. ( This was not purchased on Amazon but as an open box at Best Buy (saved 45 bucks)PSU: Cosair 750w modularHonestly not much to say Cosair makes great products and this fits that bill!! All the wires you could possibly need for a 750w system, definitely has great vaule and looks 5/5MOBO: GIGABYTE X670EIt can be difficult these days to find a white motherboard, but the X670E definitely fits the bill. The board looks great and the built in RGB next to the panel connectors is awesome. This board has 4 NVMe slots Which is great for heavy storage of either games or other files. The GPU Pcie slot is also reinforced to help reduce some of the bigger 40 graphics cards from sagging. Definitely would recommend 5/5CPU: AMD Ryzen 7700xOverall, a great CPU not really much to say it's a 16 thread 8 core CPU that pairs very well with the 4070 T.I.Super The AM5 design ensures that support for this specific CPU will be around for a while. Some people say the CPU gets hot on under load. I have yet to see any instances of that. 5/5GPU: Aero OC 4070 Ti Super (16GB)The look and design of this GPU fits my build exactly the way I wanted it to the little R. G. B sign that's on the front of the graphics card. It's a nice touch. This is the OC Addition, which is unlocked from factory to enable overclocking, but with the 16 GB of V.Ram that's on this graphics card with it being the T.I super. overclocking is not required for games Just quite yet, maybe in the future It will but that's what I bought this so I'm semi future proof. 5/5Ram: T Force RGB DDR5 6000mhz (32GB)Again, sort of like my CPU not really much to say here. The R GB is controllable through the gigabyte control app. Once you set up your p, c, so you could set any custom color and sort of wave pattern that you like. DDR 5 is definitely the way to go nowadays. With the increase speed that you can get on larger sets of Ram. These Ram sticks have a really nice. --Skip to second paragraph if you dont want to hear the backstory--

Genuinely never even considered air cooler in the past, but my AIO was getting old and even with fresh thermal paste my cpu temps were pushing 80s under heavy load (i7 9700k). Worried about my pump failing, and wanting to rebuild my pc anyway, I started looking for new a new AIO. After looking endlessly and scratching my head on which was the best to buy, I noticed someone mention this cooler. Air cooling? Isn't that relevant for like... pentium level processors? Jokes aside, I genuinely didn't think air cooling could cut it. Boy was I wrong.

Mine refuses to go above 64c under heavy load, usually hovering right around 60c. I think the only way it would is if the fans were set very low or off entirely. Max spikes will hit <75c but it's so quick and rare that I disregard it. It does hit the 60c threshold rather quickly (seconds after applying heavy load) with either a modest or aggressive fan curve, but once it's there it holds it even hours under a stress test. Under moderate load I see low to mid 50s.

It's also QUIET. Even without low noise adapter and fan curve at 70%, this cooler makes most AIO setups sound like jet engines. I was going for a low noise setup and this cooler has been the perfect addition for that. I see people talking about adding the LNA but I really don't feel like it even needs it.

If that's not enough, just remember that there's no pump failure. No having to desperately wait for a new AIO to arrive or shovel out another $100 for a cooler. This cooler can run perfectly fine on a single fan, so even if one goes out, or even if it's just for less noise, there won't be a huge difference on cooling.

Lastly, I really do think this cooler looks so good in a case, especially one with minimal RGB like mine. Just enough to show its colossal shadow but not enough to light it up entirely. At first I really didn't care for the look but I decided to give it a try just for the cooling (and I didn't plan on having any rgb on at all originally) but once it's in the case it really does look good. The only thing I don't like is the spikes on the ends of the heatsinks. I do hope to cover those, eventually.

While going for a low noise, minimal rgb build, this cooler is a big part of why I adore my pc.

Some notes:

When mounting the heatsink, use a single swift downward motion, lining up the screws, then alternate screwing them in. Moving the heatsink around could add a bunch of air to your thermal paste and degrade cooling quality. Make sure the screws are tight too. Don't try to tighten them farther than they're willing to go, but, make sure they are fully screwed in. When first installing I was trying to get one screw in at a time but it wasn't working and it kept messing up the thermal paste. One motion. Straight down.

NT-H2 thermal paste will cool a few degrees more than the provided NT-H1. Both are good, though.

The fans are easier to add or remove than they appear. Don't be dumb like me and try to pull off the wire clips without moving the fan. Initially installing them was a pain, because I was trying to do it by applying pressure on the wire only. Dont do this. To mount a fan, before putting it against the heatsink, push one side of the wire clips as far as it will go in the direction it's going to mount (the direction the fan will blow). Then hook it onto to heatsink where you want it. Now, pull the fan in the opposite direction of the currently mounted clip. The unmounted clip should extend past the heatsink where it's going to hook into. Now do the same as the other side, push the wire foward, hook it on, pull the fan to be center. Allow the fan to do all the work (you might have to push on one of the wires a little bit to get it to fully seat, but it shouldn't be much).

This thing is BIG, it barely fits above RAM and will likely not work with a vertical GPU.

That's about it, I really don't have anything negative to say. Happy I decided to try it, much happier than I would be with an AIO.

If you took the time to read this, thank you, and I hope I helped in some way.

In the foreface of the manual it says something like "... we hope you will notice the effort that we put into the quality of this product", and you know what? I really did notice the effort. This was my first Noctua product, but I'm totally sold. Installing the heat sink on the cpu is always the step of PC building that I fear most, but Noctua eased me through it with an intelligent product design, superb written instructions, and color-coded parts. Then when I was finished and booted up, expecting this giant heat-sink-plus-2-fans combo to roar like a jet engine, it's so quiet that I can't even tell my PC is running unless I put my ear close. As a consumer, I'm used to being disappointed by products, but Noctua genuinely impressed me here.

Just be forewarned that you really SHOULD take the time to double-check the compatibility with both your motherboard AND your case, because as all the other reviewers have said, this thing is BIG. Both my motherboard and my case were listed as compatible on the Noctua website, and it did fit, but just barely. I'm talking mere millimeters of clearance between the frontmost fan and my motherboard power cables. If the Noctua website does NOT list your motherboard AND case as BOTH being compatible, then don't even try, it won't work.

Forget watercooling this does the job well. My 7800x3d doesn't ever, EVER break over 65c. Most of my gaming to include dcs world and star citizen , will only get to 55-60c. Benchmarking stress testing I've seen 65c. As soon as the load on cpu stops the Temps go straight to low 40s in seconds I'd say, and idles at 32-35c in a room that's 75 degrees f. Since I had to raise the fan over the ram the cooler is too tall for my case with isn't a very big case. So I'm just running without the glass panel for now since my x670e taichi by ASRock has tons of cooling on all the components, there's nothing to worry about. But I am going to have to upgrade to the 7000d case to fit it all in. The all black finish looks great, much better then the dog pok brown noctua loves for some ugly reason. There's no reason to risk your components with watercooling with this as an option, I guarantee it. Atleast with a 7800x3d under it. I've had no issues with fans failing g ever with noctua products, this is a premium product and oh the thermal paste that it comes with, is literally the second best and the best is like .5c better tells so there's literally no reason to spend 30 bucks on the only thermal paste better then what this comes with. Easy as pie to install on am5, no previous experience required lol. This cooler is chill as hell, dont think twice about how much a 480mm cooler could cool your cpu, because it would only cool a few degrees better, if it even cools better, because there are plenty of 360 and 480 mm coolers that don't exc3ed the performance of this cooler. It's just big. Buy now.

I replaced a 3 year old AIO liquid loop with this and I just wish I’d done it sooner. It’s MUCH quieter and both my idle and stress temperatures have decreased by a good amount. It is definitely a chunky boy but it’s actually really straight forward to install, if you’re comfortable with changing a CPU for instance then it’s easy enough to squeeze in, or just take a couple of bits out first then fit it and put it back. I couldn’t recommend it enough, feels like a huge upgrade in cooling performance and also reliability as now all I have to worry about is 2 fans, no liquid loop or radiator etc. that could break instead. For reference this is running on a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, so not an entry level CPU, and it still does an amazing job!
