Hellbenders: A Traditional Western Novel by Richard Prosch is a gritty, realistic, engaging western. Lin Jarret is a Texas Ranger who answers the call from a friend to head out to assist a ranch owner, the lovely Reece Sinclair, who is in the midst of a violent property dispute. The story takes off from there, when almost immediately the protagonist is brought into the conflict.
Prosch as a writer, offers the reader a focused sense of place in location and history, and it is with these talents that the author takes what appears at first to be a story about a land dispute and expand it into something more. What I loved about this particular book, and for me it is the staple of any good western novel, are the characters. Where other writers might front load them into the story, Prosch, with a confident talent, introduces characters as the plot calls them to organically come forth. This unveiling allows the reader to enjoy the unfolding story line at a pace that keeps said reader fully engaged with the story line.
I look forward to the second book in this series. If you love a classic western, with familiar themes, steeped in a sense of history, with the inclusion of memorable characters, then I recommend Hellbenders.
