Product Description
This short focal length refractor telescope gives wonderfully wide views of the night sky! You do not need a big, bulky telescope to enjoy backyard astronomy. Our potent little Orion Observer 80ST Equatorial Refractor Telescope proves otherwise. Compact and hassle free, it's easy to take outside and set up, and easy to bring in when you're done. This versatile telescope's 80mm-aperture objective lens has a short focal length of 400mm (f/5), which makes the Observer 80ST extremely portable and compact. Thanks to the telescope's fast f/5 focal ratio, bright, wide-field views of the stars and deep-space objects are the Observer 80ST's forte! Tracking celestial objects while viewing them in the Observer 80ST telescope is a cinch with the smooth and stable EQ-1B equatorial mount and tripod. The mount is equipped with dual slow motion controls for easy manual tracking of objects in the night sky. The Observer 80ST refractor telescope comes with a reflex sight, 90-degree diagonal (1.25"), and 10mm and 25mm Kellner 1.25" telescope eyepieces with anti-reflection coating. This pint-sized refractor also includes the useful MoonMap 260 to help you identify interesting lunar features you can see in the telescope. A niftier grab-and-go scope you will not find!

Here are a few general comments: Don't expect spectacular close-up views of stellar objects. The scope only has an 80 millimeter aperture. It will allow you to see the moons of Jupiter, Saturn's rings (but not the Cassini Division), the polar ice caps on Mars (though very faint; don't expect great detail), the Andromeda Galaxy, and many of the Messier objects like the Orion Nebula (M 42 -- looks spectacular), the Pleiades, and open star clusters like M 15 and M34. Deeper sky objects, such as the Triangulum Galaxy (M 33) and the Whirlpool Galaxy (M 51), are either too diffuse or too distant for the 80ST to pick up (although I live in a small town with light polluted skies -- retreating to a darker site might help).
As long as you keep your expectations reasonable, I think you will be pleased overall with this scope, especially in terms of its affordability. However, if you are like me, you will soon begin contemplating the next step up. I'm currently considering an eight inch Dobsonian. That said, I recommend this telescope for anyone getting started in amateur astronomy, and who want some good views that won't break the bank.
I just got the second telescope, about a week later and it is perfect! Big lenses were in the head of the scope securely and It looks super good quality and solid... Best part; The family and I went out and saw the moon! Man it was bright and crisp and clear. I would give it 5 stars but our 3 boys were really disappointed when the first arrived broken and I feel the damage could have been avoided with some bubble wrap- there was not a single piece of bubble wrap in the new replacement sent or the broken one(first one). Also, even though my lenses and everything important was in good shape this time round(second telescope), one of the legs of our tripod was a little dinged up- perfectly usable but felt I should mention it- again, bubble wrap could really help Orion, just sayin. To make bubble wrap work the boxes would have to be larger and I understand that all adds to cost. So overall for the money- the telescope is great. Directions should also be mentioned- this was a more tricky thing to assemble but I was confident with their instructions- The instruction booklet was Excellent. Pictures were very helpful and to the point. I love that we are able to see space. Its amazing. Thank you for outstanding service to Orion also. Very good customer support- I was on hold for like 1 minute. She helped immediately and I feel very confident if I ever choose to upgrade- I would choose them again.
Took about 30 minutes to assemble, very easy instructions and the controls work very easy. 2 lenses for different resolutions. It's just a great telescope for the money.
