OK, so the EM-10 mark iii was offering improvements:
(mostly taking from the EM-1 mark ii)
slightly better image stabilization
faster focus and facial recognition
faster processing engine
a little faster fps in sequential shooting
a simplified menu system
4k video
120 fps video for slow mo
slightly smaller lighter body (more plastic)
The addition of (AP) advanced photo mode (basically a shortcut to special features)
What do you loose:
less flexibility in customization.(this is kind of a big one)
The ability to set video preference through all modes (P,A,S,M)
Perhaps a little less feel to build quality. (Still really good though)
No more My Set
you only have 2 function buttons instead of 3
No add on grip (however, there is a 3d party grip available) works good.
SUMMARY:
I am really a fan of the tilt screen over the fully articulating screen. Olympus only does the tilt screen with there OM10 models. So since my OM10 mark ii is a few years old thought I might take the price advantage and buy a second OM10 mark ii body (just in case). I ultimately decided to take a leap of faith and bought the OM10 mark iii body. I think I made a good choice. The difference between the 2 models arguably similar, with the older model perhaps offering more flexibility. However, the changes for me offer some welcome enhancements for a few dollars more. You can still accomplish all the same things but are somewhat dependent on some well chosen and optimized defaults. My first feeling was a bit of culture shock. For those who feel Olympus menu system was tedious will find this one concise, intuitive, and well organized.
The new AP mode shortcuts features which were more difficult to reach on the older model. It addresses quickly getting to Live Comp, Live Time, HDR, Silent Mode, Panorama, Key Stone effect, and AE & AF bracketing (Note: Silent mode is only achievable with this shortcut). However, In each choice it resets all other choices to factory or what they set as default, may perhaps be parameters which you wish to change. You have to go into the menu system to make the changes (a big one is focus it goes back to 121 area layout, or it will set up VIVID and you want Monochrome. It does not save your changes so when you go out and back in you have to re-set your preferences. Don’t know why they did that.
Also, to get flexibility in video, you have to put the camera in Video mode. Shooting from any other mode defaults you to Program and Standard Video. Which is ok but you have no flexibility.
You must set the camera in video mode if you want 4k, Clip, or High Speed. This takes a little getting use too, but doable and the results are positive.
I have a hunch the more I use the mark iii, it will become my go to camera for general shooting and street photography.
The image quality is pretty much the same they do use the same sensor. I have always gotten great results with my EM 10 and mark ii. So great is great.
Hope my review was informative and helpful. Thanks for looking.
Needed a camera that was not too bulky and that could eccept a macro lens for photographing insects. Difficult to do with my cell phone camera.
The Negative;
A) No Mic input....... bummer...... however for home family use the internal mics are probably fine and for pro use we mostly use an external recorder anyway so.............
B) ISO performance drops FAST after ISO 3200 although we have found ISO 3200 is fine for pro use after some minor noise removal with NEAT VIDEO plug-in for premiere........for medium size picture prints you probably don't want to go over 1600 ISO with some noise removal ...... ISO performance however seems cleaner than the Panasonic G7 (The Panasonic GH5 seems to have the cleanest ISO performance of any micro 4/3 camera)
C) Color seems a bit off straight out of the camera.......however this only took us about 10 minutes to correct as Olympus allows you to tweak RGB channels even for the auto white balance mode
The Positive;
A) ISO performance competitive for the price range (Just as Clean as the $1700 olympus EM1 mark 2)......throw some fast glass such as f1.4-f2 and your good to go for low light shooting (video) or make sure to have a strong camera flash. Again, ISO performance seems to beat the the panasonic G7
B) IBIS is quite good, only beaten by Olympus em1 mark 2 .......... would love to see an IBIS comparison between this and the Panasonic GH5.
C) 4K video bit rate averages around 60mbs..... this is going to limit your processing in post. If you don't do a lot of post processing you should be fine
D) pop up flash quite decent for a built in flash
E) battery life is excellent for a mirrorless camera. on 3 separate tests we got over 2 hours of video on 1 battery charge
F) While the focus does not compete with say the SONY a6500, the 121 contrast focus points this camera has (no phase detection in this model) we found it to be extremely accurate even in low light and video provides smooth focus transitions. The focus system on this camera slams the panasonic line (at least for video) inluding the G7, G85 and even the $2000 GH5
Bottom Line ........... If you are an enthusiast or even an entry level pro this camera is incredibly hard to beat at the price point. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!
