This directional gun microphone is great for recording birds singing outdoors. The adoption of a metal-cut body makes it very sturdy. It is also convenient for lectures and other events as there is a stand that attaches to the grip to enable the microphone to be placed on a table. A grip that facilitates attachment of a microphone stand (NS 5/8") or camera tripod is also included.

I purchased this mic in order to record my voice for YouTube videos, using Camtasia, and both the quality of my voice and the volume were just not good enough.
I should have returned the mic, but left it for too long, and ended up having to use a previously owned Andrea headset mic to do the job.
I recently purchased the Audio Technica AT2020 USB microphone after further research, and it is so much better than this Olympus mic it's not funny.
So I highly recommend you forget about this one and get the Andrea instead.
I originally purchased the Olympus ME-31 shotgun mic because of its excellent reputation when used with speech recognition software like Dragon Naturally Speaking. Indeed, the ME-31's narrow pickup-pattern (it's a shotgun mic) and high-sensitivity easily equals the accuracy of the best headset-mounted noise-canceling speech recognition mics -- and that includes the vaunted Sennheiser ME3 headset mic (I know this because I have one). Those who frequently use speech recognition in their daily work often get tired of wearing headset mics all day, especially when you're forced to frequently remove and replace the headset for various reasons. Positioning the Olympus ME-31 on its included desk stand, aimed at your mouth about 12-15 inches away gives excellent performance. Or, you can attach it with Velcro to the top of your monitor, or attach it to the boom arm of an old $20 desk lamp so it points over the top of the monitor at your mouth.
The real surprise was when I pressed the Olympus ME-31 into service alongside my professional audio recording gear for on-site podcast interviews, and as a shotgun mic solution for DSLR video recordings. Unlike my phantom-powered XLR microphones used with pro-grade audio recorders, the Olympus ME-31 requires "plug-in power" through its 3.5mm jack. Most 3.5mm microphone jacks featured on consumer-grade audio equipment today deliver plug-in power by default, and that includes audio recorders, cameras, computers, and most smartphones. Plugging the Olympus ME-31 directly into my Nikon DSLR camera 3.5mm audio input jack delivered great audio quality -- especially with interviews -- nearly rivaling my far more expensive XLR condenser microphones with external digital recorders. Since my XLR-based digital recorders also feature a 3.5mm plug-in power jack, I sometimes use the Olympus ME-31 as a "third microphone" in field interview situations that require it. When editing the audio in Adobe Audition, it's difficult to hear the difference.
I'm not sure what caused the previous reviewer to be so dissatisfied with the "volume" of his particular Olympus ME-31, but I strongly suspect the microphone was not at fault. Switching to a USB-based mic solved his problem probably because using the USB mic completely sidestepped whatever analog audio input he was using with the ME-31. I will say that the Olympus ME-31 seems to be a completely overlooked gem. The ME-31 delivers excellent audio quality and versatility in a very durable all-metal package. It includes a full-length foam windscreen, desk stand and microphone mount easily adaptable to industry-standard mic stands and camera hot shoes, and an excellent padded zippered pouch. Unlike so many other manufacturers producing similar plug-in power microphones suitable for video recorders or DSLRs, Olympus makes no effort to promote or advertise this product. They should!
For being a shotgun mic, the sound quality is terrible. Going back to unidirectional handheld microphone. Very surprised at the lack of quality this provided.
