It started right up, and was perfectly calibrated, once I got it prepared. I opened it up, and took off the ground connection, sanded off the paint, and reconnected it to make sure it was grounded as that can be a problem on these. I removed one of the throw away battery powered temperature probes (these are worthless, and only there for looks in my opinion). In its place I used a dremel tool to wide the hole, and installed the analog amp meter recommended by the ke dott se guy on his page. They shipped it with hot glue on all threaded connections, it was very well packed with foam etc.
I also removed the exhaust duct intake that extends over the bed, instead of doing what most people do, which is trim it in half. The new exhaust fan does fine, even with just the simple air intake hole in the back.
The laser was already setup such that its focal point worked amazing for cutting 1/4" and 1/8" wood by simply setting it on the stainless steel table. You can take out the clamp, and there is a separate flat stainless insert now, which makes the entire table large, smooth, and stainless, and with no need to adjust its height. You can them remove the stainless steel table to print thicker objects; just need some blocking underneath the item.. It is a really great setup, incredible value for the parts, and the heavy cabinet. Have cut and engraved many many items and the machine has always operated successfully when I give K40 whisperer software the right instructions, speed, and power. If you want a great value and are ready to engrave, then buy it. If you never want to lift a tool or turn a wrench to make a machine operate well and be adaptable, then start saving up alot more money for a consumer grade model that does the same thing, and that you will never want to personalize, modify or tweak due to its cost.
The product shipped promptly from California and arrived in new condition. The item was very well packed in double boxes and I am grateful for that. There was some obvious minor damage on the outside of the box, but thankfully the unit inside was undamaged and in new condition.
Setup was a breeze, I had watched a few youtube videos and so I knew more-or-less what to expect. I had a 5-gallon bucket on hand for cooling water, and everything worked right out of the box. If, like me, you are new to "emergency stop" buttons then be sure to give a little twist or it will not spring-release and you will not get power.
I had the machine humming and the software installed on my laptop in a single afternoon. I removed the duct for the built-in fan, I intend to use the machine mostly for cutting and not as much engraving. The optics needed cleaning and there was a very small adjustment to the focus, but otherwise I had my first piece of 1.5mm corrugated cardboard laser-cut by the morning of the next day.
IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE OPTICS, AS IN MIRRORS AND LENS, CLEAN AND IN FOCUS.
-:- If you cannot cut most of the way through 1.5mm corrugated cardboard at 20% power and at 50mm/sec cutting speed then you probably need to clean and focus the optics.
-:- If you do not hear a crisp "sizzle" sound as the laser cuts the 1.5mm corrugated cardboard at 20% power and at 50mm/sec then you probably need to clean and focus the optics
-:- If you see excessive smoke and flame as the laser cuts the 1.5mm corrugated cardboard at 20% power and at 50mm/sec, or it takes more than two passes, then you probably need to clean and focus the optics
-:- If you see an excessive amount of charring and fine black ash on the edges after cutting 1.5mm corrugated cardboard at 20% power and at 50mm/sec then you probably need to clean and focus the optics
-:- If the optics are clean and in focus you should see a clean pencil-thin line and very little flame, charring or black ash when cutting 1.5mm corrugated cardboard at 20% power and at 50mm/sec cutting speed, even after two passes. There will be some smoke, but it shouldn't be more than the built-in exhaust fan can handle, even with the top open.
-:- Yes, there will be a very small amount of charring on the edges. That is just the nature of the beast. Small price to pay for such clean and accurate cutting, and no more craft knives!
