The Roku is very simple to use and small enough to travel. We recently took a 3-week trip where we stayed in a timeshare and several AirBnB locations. I put the Roku into a small plastic bag in my carry-on luggage (as you can see, there are two cords involved, not just the little Rocu and remote) for the trip. We had to get a little assistance with a mounted TV, but it worked perfectly, giving us a lot more options.
We have a Chromecast and Apple TV as well as the Roku. The Apple TV stays home; I've had trouble using the Chromecast, but the Roku is perfect!

We recently picked up a second TV and were looking for something to just add Netflix. Well, this little beauty does that... and so much more! Our living room TV has a LG BluRay player with built-in Netflix and was also able to connect to the home computer (via Plex). Since I just wanted Netflix on the bedroom TV I purchased this to do just that. Once you set it up (which you have to do via computer, AND it requires credit card info which I'm not keen on) you just start adding apps. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Plex app was available for the Roku. Then I started adding channels like Tubi, PopcornTV, and of course Netflix. There are quite a lot of "channels" to choose from, albeit not much Canadian content. Especially news channels. So that's a bummer.
I've had to switch the Roku to the living room TV because I was spending all my time watching the bedroom TV.
There are some very cool features too! If you have a smartphone, you can add the Roku app to your phone. You can then have the audio streamed to your headset if you want to watch TV at night without bothering anyone else! That being said... sometimes it "loses" the bluetooth connection to your headset and immediately the sound comes out the TV speakers again. My partner did not enjoy the explosions in Die Hard at 3 am. Which is the other reason the Roku is in the living room.
The Roku is so small, it's hardly noticeable. The remote seems larger. The buttons on the remote are few and simple.
Pros: Price (cheaper than cable) Integration with other devices (smartphone, PC) You'll probably watch more TV
Cons: Setup is a bit annoying, not difficult, and the requirement of a credit card even though most apps/channels are free. Occasional loss of bluetooth connection when using the Roku app. You'll be watching more TV
I have a Chromecast, but have never been able to get it to stream video from my devices (PC, Samsung Tab A, and later Amazon Fire HD) without major lag/disconnecting issues. Have only been able to successfully use it for photos and screen mirroring for simple tasks like surfing the net. I used an Android box for a while, and it worked great until it died a few months later. Gave the Amazon Fire TV a try, but it kept having issues with playback using Plex to play videos from my PC, so I returned it.
I decided to give the Roku a try, and I have been absolutely thrilled with it! No issues whatsoever! We're even getting a second one for our living room! Everyone needs a Roku, in my opinion! :)
