I decided I wanted to start making chainmaille-style jewelry. I am not sure which metal I will eventually settle on (right now I am just playing around with copper since I have a lot of it and it is inexpensive) so I wanted a separate set of pliers that I could dip in Tool Magic in case I eventually start working with anodized or enameled metals. (I also got some roundnose pliers from the same brand.) These didn't break the bank and I can always use them for my other jewelry-making applications if I end up not liking chainmalle (though right now I find it pretty fun).
Anyway, as I said, I've been using plain, bare copper (while I wait for my Tool Magic to arrive). It has a hard temper but I do all right bending the jump rings open and closed using these in my lefthand (the roundnose pliers, I use in my right hand). I think these work for me because they are relatively small. I have small hands, and I can get a good grip on these, and that makes it easier to manipulate the metal I am working with.
These are smooth but they do have an edge and I have marred the surface of some jump rings as I get the hang of using them. It doesn't bother me much because I am just doing practice weaves right now and I have a protective coating on order that should prevent that problem in the future.
I would probably stick to using these on softer metals -- copper, silver, brass, maybe niobium or aluminum. I think using them on hardened steel would not work very well. I would also stick to using them for jewelry applications and not put them in a general toolbox for household work.
Anyway, I was looking for a set of economy pliers to try with a new craft and that's what I got with these.
Two cons (for me):
-The length of the handles is really inadequate. I found these incredibly uncomfortable to adjust to from larger pliers as these end right in the middle of my palm. It's almost as if they just shrank a larger pair of pliers and the handles were shrunk proportionately as well. Despite that, I am now accustomed to where these end- in my palm.
-The leaf spring on these is incredibly weak. There's a reason why I have to replace these and it's because one of the leaf springs always breaks at the point under the rubber. Look at some of the other reviews- it's not just me. But I keep coming back to these because I need the smaller tip and the lack of teeth.
