Not Just Gal Pals: A Sapphic Small-Town Romantic Comedy (Sapphire Springs Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 747 ratings

A feel-good sapphic fall rom com that’ll make you want to cozy up in front of a log fire with mug of steaming cider!

Jenny Lynton never planned to be an influencer. It just sort of…happened. When an unfortunate post results in Jenny being “almost canceled,” she extends her stay in her hometown, Sapphire Springs, New York, to wait out the storm. Jenny's agent suggests a fling with a flannel-wearing lumberjack might be just the thing to distract her. But after a string of disastrous dates, Jenny has sworn off flings. And lumberjacks are in short supply in Sapphire Springs. Lumberjanes, on the other hand...

Blake Mitchell is Sapphire Spring’s only doctor. She’s also had a crush on Jenny since high school. A crush that makes her a socially awkward mess whenever she’s around Jenny. Blake moved back home to avoid being hurt by another relationship–there’s not exactly a lot of dating options for lesbians in Sapphire Springs–but Blake can’t stop thinking about Jenny now she’s back in town.

When Jenny and Blake are forced to work together to save a friend’s bachelorette party, sparks fly. But with Jenny’s return to LA a ticking time-bomb, is it wise for them to explore their feelings for each other, or do they risk being hurt yet again?

I found this to be a fun enjoyable small-town romance. The steam or spice level was perfect for me. The characters and the town and well-written. One of my favorite scenes was the wedding shower, I love Pride and Prejudice references. Jenny and Blake's personalities wind up complimenting each other in wonderful ways. If you are looking for a cozy small-town romance, you can't go wrong curling up with this book.

I didn’t know what to expect when I read this book, since it was the first book from this author that I’ve read. It was a cute small town story with many funny scenes. Both mains grew up in the town, but didn’t get along way back when in school. Jenny now makes a living as an influencer until she needs to take a break. Blake is a doctor, so you know misunderstandings will occur and well-meaning friends will butt in to their business. I don't usually laugh when reading romcoms, but I did with this book.

Such a sweet enemy different story. Just so many misinterpretations that made this a sweet and compelling story to read! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Loved the characters, the love story, and the relatable situations this day and age! Great writing! There were some pretty funny moments in this book too, where I found myself laughing out loud.

Not Just Gal Pals is sort of an enemies to lovers, but that mostly has to do with miscommunication. Blake has had a crush on Jenny since they were in high school. Jenny comes back to town, taking a break from her Instagram influencer career for her friend's wedding. Both Jenny and Blake also happen to both be bridesmaids for their mutual friend.

Throughout all of the bridesmaids shenanigans and Jenny trying to keep up with her influencer job, her and Blake slowly become friends. Eventually, they let their feelings out, and then they can't really keep their hands off each other.

I felt like there was quite a bit of character development, as well as plot. The book was well paced until the last 15-20%, I feel like - which is really my own personal complaint. I feel like it wrapped up too quickly and it felt like the author was just trying to push out an ending, or like she got bored with it.

Without giving too much away, there's a part where a character accidentally goes to the wrong place, and instead of knowing the character feels or the panic that would come along with that, she just says that someone is going to pick her up, and that's it. I think that was the part that upset me the most.

Overall, this was a quick, fun read. I'd recommend it to someone wanting to read a rom-com over the weekend, or just wanting to read a fun book.

"The desire to U-Haul it immediately had never been so strong."

This was a cute, realistic, fall-themed romance between two MCs who both thought the other hated them, then were forced to interact and work together in small town/mutual friend events until they finally realized they are great together, as friends then then more. It was almost too realistic at times with the awkwardness and misconceptions, but I really liked their slow-burn progression and how they took their time getting closer as friends before acting on their attraction. I wish it had a bit more spice, it focused on the comedic moments more like the scenes with the niece & nephew, but overall it was a fun and sweet read for the autumn holidays.

I thought this was the cutest book. Much like Blake, I've sworn off dating due to bad past relationships, but Blake and Jenny's relationship ALMOST made me want to start trying to date again. I can't wait to read more from this author

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and sweet without surprises

This was a great read for a couple of nice, relaxed evenings. The characters are very sweet, they have some very funny interactions and their whole relationship feels natural. We get a tiny bit of friends with benefits trope here, but even the protagonists acknowledge very soon that is *so* not where things are headed.
More importantly, there is no real 3rd act breakup, just some minor drama, so this is a comfortable read without much anxiety. The plot doesn't hold any big surprises, you can see where things are going from miles away, but there is nothing wrong with that in a sweet little romcom.
I really loved the cast of supporting characters in this, too, both human and animals. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed it

While I've read quite a few MM romances, this is my first FF and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed the way the relationship between Blake and Jenny developed (I'm a bit of a sucker for any enemies to lovers type relationship). Being a contemporary romance it was always going to have a modern feel, but I found Jenny's career as a social media influencer- how she fell into into it, the demands and the pitfalls of it- really interesting. As with her first book, this author doesn't shy away from some of the challenges we encounter in modern day living and I like that. It's refreshing. I'll be very interested to see what Elizabeth Luly writes next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Sapphic Fall Romcom
Reviewed in Canada on August 24, 2023
This was a fun, dual POV, Fall Sapphic romance between Jenny, a bisexual influencer from California and Blake, her former high school classmate and all around amazing small town lesbian doctor.

After nearly getting cancelled, Jenny is trying to recover her reputation embracing all things wholesome and New England in the Fall when her best friend Amanda asks her to help Blake plan her bachelorette.

Sparks fly as the two are continually forced to work together and eventually they strike up a no strings attached, 'let's bang out our feelings' arrangement.

I thought both women were relatable, loved the tight-knit, small town community, the dyslexia rep (Jenny), all the Jane Austen vibes AND the adorable pets!

Many thanks to NetGalley and the author for a complimentary early copy. I voluntarily read this book and all opinions are my own. I can’t wait to read George's story next!
