Forgotten Monsters (Forgotten Monsters: The Complete Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 53 ratings

One frigid, winter evening Marissa Summers saved someone’s life. She’d used her secret telekinetic abilities to stop a robbery in a park and – lucky her – someone recorded it. Footage from the incident went viral. Though she did her best to conceal her identity by wrapping a scarf around her face, she was easily recognized by the one person she’s evaded for years: her abusive mother, Claire.

Claire makes Marissa an offer too good to refuse – she can bury the growing story and prevent Marissa’s identity from being revealed. While Claire says she has her daughter’s best interests at heart, Marissa soon discovers that her mother’s lies and secrets are far more insidious than she could have ever imagined.

The worst part? No matter how much power Marissa has, it becomes obvious that Claire can still get Marissa under her control with just a few manipulative words.

With her freedom on the line, Marissa must confront her mother, inciting a battle she never wanted to be a part of. Will she find the strength to overcome her past once and for all or will she remain entrapped in the snare of the very person she spent her life fleeing from?

Michael Procopio is a fantasy writer living in Massachusetts. He grew up with dreams of somehow becoming a vampire slayer or developing superpowers. When that didn’t happen, he got a job working in higher education.

When he’s not writing, Michael can be found baking (and stuffing his face with said baked goods), reading, watching TV (too much TV, honestly), spending time with his family and friends, and traveling.

It’s not slaying vampires but it’s also not as boring as it sounds.

TRIGGER WARNING: Gaslighting
The main character's mother is an expert gaslighter.
I do not have issues with gaslighting in my past, though I have helped several friends who have, and this story made me so uncomfortable I stopped about a third of the way in. Yes, I want to see how the hero overcomes her past and escapes her abuser, but it is too much for me ... almost ... no, I'm going to say firmly horror level for me.

Well written, this will be someone's jam, but it is just too much for me.

Did not finish 33%.

This story is one wild and scary ride. This isn't my usual genre but I decided to give it a look. Oh boy am I glad I did. This story is terrifying. Not much scares me but a couple of the characters in this table are absolute horrors. I'm looking forward to book two.

Marissa had escaped her controlling mother once, but one slip when she used her power to save someone from a gunman in the park, and her mother was back in her life. Suddenly Marissa is doubting herself, trying to remember what happened between them. She finds herself doing things she really doesn't want to do, and remembering doing things she had done that felt so unlike anything she would do. Everything was falling apart since her mother came back in her life. Very good story, thinking about what could go wrong if an unstable person had a superpower.

Marissa left her old life behind ten years ago, but now, because she used her powers to save a life, her mother has found her. As her entire life begins to be dismantled, piece by piece, will she discover the truth?

This is a terrific superhero (and supervillain) story. I loved the characters and their stories. I can't wait to hear what happens next.

I thought this was a good read. The characters weren't all powerful could do no wrong but were very human but with a certain extra. Very enjoyable story.
