“A gripping thriller . . . I was on the edge of my seat! . . . my heart was pounding!” —Amazon reviewer, five stars

The Handmaid’s Tale meets Blade Runner. A powerful tale of control, love and family in a brave new world where nothing is as it seems.” —M. Sean Coleman, author of The Cuckoo Wood

Her future is about to change. So is her past . . .

In the English seaside town of Brighton, Robyn Lockhart has a boyfriend named Vincent, a frail, sickly sister, and a mother who keeps a lock on one of the cupboards. These things she knows. Other things are much foggier, and it’s not because of the drugs or alcohol. For example, Tiffany—the tattooed bartender she befriends after an ugly fight with Vincent. She seems familiar, and she appears to know Robyn. Is this the start of a new relationship or a continuation of one?

While Robyn connects with Tiffany, a vicious storm hits the city, punctuated by a deafening roar in the middle of the night. The next day, the source of the sound is revealed: a battered ship has run aground on the beach across from Tiffany’s apartment. Authorities arrive quickly. The gawking crowds are forcefully driven away as a noxious gas fills the air. Oddly enough, news outlets make no mention of the event.

For Robyn, the mystery surrounding the beached vessel is as disturbing as the question of her sanity. As she tries to sort out what is real and why she’s unable to remember certain details, Robyn will discover to the truth about herself, her family, and the place she’s always called home.

Top review from the United States

I must admit I found this novel challenging as I really didn't anticipate its direction so needed to frequently review my ideas about earlier sections. This included characters, motivations, locations and chronology so, yes, fundamental upheavals more than once! The hard work was worth it: the story played out very satisfactorily and fragments of it have even turned up in my dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dystopian thriller

This is a superbly written and highly engaging read set in a Brighton that is massively removed from the 21st century. This strange world is beautifully realised and the result is a totally engrossing read - I read it in two sittings and the storyline stays with you for a long time. Robyn is a strong character with real determination and great vulnerability too. I can't wait to see what this author produces next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thriller with a fantastic storyline crescendo

I thought this book was really exciting and really got me thinking about things. I'm not a huge fan of science fiction, but I love Brighton as a city, and thought I'd give it a read. The plot is quite complex, but worth sticking with and towards the end I couldn't put it down. I can really see this book being made into a film at some point.

Weird but In a good way.
I felt it could have been a little shorter. And there was a few questions I would have liked to have been answered. Don't know if I would read this author again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been 5*

Essentially, this is a good story - original, imaginative and well-written. The problem is that the first part is much too long. It starts of as intriguing - strange things happen, and keep happening. What on earth is going on, you think. But you do not find out until 40% through and, to be quite honest, I very nearly abandoned it, thinking that I was simply no longer interested in what weird thing was going to happen next.

But I persevered. I don't like abandoning books, because I know myself how much effort goes into writing them. Eventually, all was explained, and the tempo and excitement increased. Overall, I was glad I to have stayed with it. But the book should come with this warning! The 40% should have been reduced to 25-30% at the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great second novel from Helen Trevorrow

A fresh look at possible futures! A real page-turner, which raises all sorts of questions about how we live now and how the human race might survive. Great characters - especially Gloria!
Really worth reading. I enjoy Trevorrow's writing in this and in her first novel, 'In the Wake' - she is playful with the way words work and her voice draws you in. Looking forward to number three already!
