1. Very lightweight and easy to work with.
2. Well made...in good shape even after bouncing around in a box all the way from China.
3. Holds long lenses solidly on tripod.
4. Works well with medium format cameras.
Cons:
1. Comes with no manual or assembly information. Fortunately, it doesn't need much instruction.
2. Packing could have been better. Mine bounced around loose in a box all the way from China, and was dinged up a bit as a result. Liveable withable.
3. Setting up the rig is a bit time consuming. I don't see being able to come across a scene that cries out for being photographed and getting set up very quickly.
In Use:
I've only had it a short while, but have tried it out with a 500mm lens on a Nikon F3 and also with a 500mm Tele-Tessar on a Hasselblad. Both lenses gave me no end of heartache when trying to use them, even though both are very sharp and contrasty lenses. I have used two tripods and gotten excellent results...but trying to change composition after getting everything put together was a major operation.
I saw one of these used in an on-line video and said to myself, "Self...you gotta get yourself one of these." So I did. It came disassembled, so I had to figure out how to put it together. For you smarter people, that won't be a problem. I did have to reverse the vertical standard in order to get it to work with either of the lenses...but again. That was a five minute job for me. And with me five minute jobs for other people take about two hours for me. Get the idea?
Once it was put together the way I liked it, I burned some black and white film. To start with, focusing was easier, because the image wasn't jumping around on the ground glass anywhere near as much. Secondly, the rig using either lens was far more stable than iI could ever achieve mounting the camera and lens on a solo tripod.
The results:
In the past, I would shoot several frames with either of my long telephotos, knowing that most would be fuzzing from camera vibrations cause by me, or the wind, during exposure. I could count on getting one sharp, but when shooting birds, the sharp one was never thte good one. In my two test rolls, I didn't have any fuzzy shots at all. 12 of 12 Hasselblad shots are as sharp as I've ever gotten from that lens. I did have a couple of clinkers using the Nikon, but I'm pretty sure I can attribute both of those to old eyeballs trying to focus through a dim viewfinder. They were both images with little contrast, and I didn't have much to focus on. I wanted to know the limitations.
This helps it stay up at a respectable angle and helps me get the job done.
It's helpful to put a rubber band around it to keep the lens from flopping around after it's been in use a while. Just make sure it's not too tight as that might cause long term damage to the lens.
Recommend it for a much more satisfying experience when your long lens needs some assistance staying in position.
Sometimes I mount it on a tripod to keep it more stable when the zoom is really extended.
Examining further I found that double clamp is causing misalignment between lens and main bar. Also, small wheels have no sleeves and plenty of play. That play allows for some compensation of misalignment but wheels are noisy when rotating lens.
I would not recommend this product even if the price is attractive.
Tom
For those that said that the front support does not adjust low enough to support the lens while mounted to the camera, take a 2.5mm hex wrench and flip the front clamp so that the long side is facing down. After doing that, the support works great with my EOS R and a 400mm f/5.6 with a 2x tele-extender. The nice long Arca plate makes it easy to balance my camera front to back for Astrophotography.
If you have a lens body that is wide enough to reach the bottom of your camera this won't fit, as others have noted. Put the lens and camera flat on a table, and if the lens body is almost touching the table where the rollers would fit you may be out of luck. Even if you flip the end piece (easy to do).
Here's a fix: look for a combo clamp and arca plate, like the "Desmond 120mm Nodal Slide DNR-120 Dual Dovetail Macro Rail & Clamp" or similar. It has a long arca plate with a clamp perpendicular to it. Put that on between the camera and this Neewer clamp and it adds enough height for many camera/lens combos to make this gadget work fine. And the extra plate is handy for macro work, balancing the load, even changing the orientation of a clamp from front to back to side to side.
The nice thing about this rig is that it is all pretty standard arca plate stuff, so can be modified easily. I use the ability to slide the camera side to side while using the roller support on a big medium format lens on a tilt shift adapter. Being able to slide the camera body means I still get the lens support, even as the camera moves side to side. Some other supports can't do that.
Top reviews from other countries
The clamp is very smooth and feels nearly as well made as a RRS one I have at many times the price. Some reviews have complained that both wheels don't touch the lens but all you have to do is slide the camera left or right slightly while tightening and both wheels will support the lens.
One thing I was concerned about from the photos and description is if the clamp could be rotated 90 degrees to accommodate a camera mounted on an L-bracket. I was pleased to find the allen wrench was supplied and let me rotate the arca mount to securely attach the camera to the rail.
Io non ho dovuto effettuare alcuna modifica: sembra fatto apposta.
Robusto, preciso.....in altre parole: eccezionale!!
Non posso dire nulla sulla compatibilità con altre fotocamere ma sulla mia calza come un guanto.
Lo consiglio vivamente.
