I need a few days to play with the light intensity automation.... If this works well... I will be ordering another set to control the sheers.
UPDATE:
Installing the hub gives you Siri voice commands (nice). There is no connectivity to HomeKit built in. You can access the hub IFTTT with a little heavy lifting if you are technically inclined to get icons and automation on HomeKit. Search the web.....
Automations within the native app work but I am having problems getting both curtain panes to respond 100% of the time. Strange..... within the app manual commands work 100% of the time.... Siri commands work 100% of the time (sometimes I have to repeat commands... same as my Lutron and Phillips lighting).
Two months later I finally got around to installing everything and it was rather simple. I configured using the SwitchBot app on my android the 2 units to operate in tandem. I was pleasantly amazed to see it working; I even set it up so that the curtains would auto close at 11pm and open at 11am. Wow! My only peeves were that the motors were a little noisy when they operated for the 15 or so seconds that they opened or closed the curtains which I decided to tolerate; also, the motors to me somehow seemed a bit weak or were struggling but I was ok with this too so long as they worked.
About two months later, one of the units could close or open only half the way; recalibrating and resetting didn't work; the batteries were fully charged; I could hear the motor chugging midway but it's as if it hit a steep incline and just didn't have enough power to finish. About a week or two later, the identical thing started happening to the other unit. The worse part was/is that I then needed to climb up to manually by hand slide both units to fully open or close the curtains.....every morning and night.
Earlier this week, both units died; no power at all from the motors though my android app can still communicate with both units. Since then, every morning and night I have to climb up to manually open and close the curtains. I've tried resetting and recalibrating but nada; batteries are fully charged.
I am especially disappointed with myself because I took the time to read the comments very well before deciding to purchase and decided to overlook as anomalies some reviews detailing this very problem.
I just sent a support request to SwitchBot at their website hopeful that they'll provide a resolution that will restore my satisfaction with the products. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll come back here in a few weeks to provide an update or sooner if they respond sooner.
Issue #1, I was able to resolve with a smaller rod diameter. Depending on your grommet size, I would recommend not going over 3/4", even staying with 5/8". Once I changed the rod, my grommets had little issue moving back and forth. you may want to just barely lubricate the rod with some WD-40 for even better movement, but of course you don't want to mess up your fabric on your curtains. Note: I did not try to use the included grommet attachment. it didn't look very pretty and I was able to resolve the issue changing the rod.
Issue #2 was a little more tedious to fix. Switchbot includes an "adapter" piece to tape over the transition. It doesn't work; don't waste your time. Others have put in their reviews that electrical tape worked. I tried it, and it was hit or miss. I found the wheel would get stuck on the tape intermittently and then cause the calibration to be off. I eventually resolved this by selecting a new rod that ensured both sides of the large window had a single continuous piece of rod ( have three mount points for my rod, two on the ends, and one in the middle). I say it was tedious to get this solved as every window is going to be a different size, and I had to try about 6-7 different rods to make sure I had equal lengths on both sides that could meet in the middle appropriately to avoid the connecting transition. As others mentioned, you can go to HD/Lowes and get a metal conduit and have it cut to length, but I didn't want to worry about spray painting it, and I wanted my finials to easily go on to the rod as well.
Programming and using the app is pretty straight forward. It could definitely use some polish on the calibration, user input screens and just overall flow, but I find that I'm rarely in the app ( I have set them to automate through Alexa), so It's been a non issue for the most part.
Overall, I would say go for this product, it can get a little costly depending on the number of windows and type of curtains you have, but I think it's a really efficient and adaptable system as a whole.
