So I was looking for a new audio interface that could handle many tracks with loads of plugins without clipping or overloading the data transfer while making music. I have an Acer Predator laptop with 32 gigs of memory with a bunch of other goodies and also a thunderbolt 3 port. The computer is pretty much loaded.

I bought this Personus Quantum 2 slightly used because it was a little spendy for the new price. Brand new it does not come with cables such as the thunderbolt 2 cord or the thunderbolt 3 adapter which could be very spendy if you had to buy them separately. When I bought mine used, it did include those items. It took me a while to figure out how to get this device operating with my PC laptop. When I first hooked it up, my computer said "thunderbolt device functionality might be limited." at the lower right corner of the screen. I was not a happy camper.

Because the device came with an apple thunderbolt 3 converter cable and belkin thunderbolt 2 cable, i thought maybe it was apple proprietary cables and I started buying other cables and converter boxes and spent more money on Amazon where I did not need to. I spent alot of time on my day off Saturday trying to figure out how do I get this thing to work, such as searching through google and looking through virtual bulletin boards finding information and troubleshooting my situation, calling around to local computer stores to see if they have any different cables and converter boxes.

Finally with the day almost being over with, I found out what I needed to do. The reason why it wasnt working was because my Thunderbolt 3 port was not updated. How I figured out how to update it, I went to my Acer Care Center app and updated the firstpack and secondpack. Had I known how to do this from the very start, I wouldnt be writing this review on this major headache I experienced. If you have a different pc computer, you may have a care center app from that maker and see if your Thunderbolt 3 port needs updating. The computer had to be shut down for 60 seconds. Once I rebooted, everything worked like a charm. Matter of fact the apple thunderbolt 3 converter even worked like it was suppose to.

It plays really well. I use Cubase Pro 9.5 as my daw and loaded the demo song from Steinberg to use as a benchmark and I found the settings work great setting the sample rate at around 128 to 256 samples when the song is fully loaded with audio plugins, midi instruments, and midi data. The preamps on the Quantum 2 are really nice as well and is also expandable. Now that I have this working, I am more than pleased with this product. And I hope my experience setting this up helps you to figure out what you need to do so that you dont have to go though the same headache I had to experience.

Fantastic interface. Just a warning, when it comes to music and interconnecting devices, you are far better off going with a Mac. I initially struggled to get this to work with a PC, the glitchy drivers, and then Windows’ own updates made the interface unrecognizable, and later caused drop outs - I never could trust it would work correctly, and was tired of wasting time (and potentially losing work) - I just want to make music not troubleshoot a computer. I figured if I spent this much on an interface I should buy an even more important part of my setup - so I bought my first iMac, with that awesome built in 5k 27” monitor. I attached the quantum to the Mac’s built in USBC thunderbolt port and was up in running in minutes and loving it - I learned the Mac uses native (and fast) software called core audio - it works flawlessly, no more f’in PC drivers. As for the Quantum, no perceivable latency and excellent sound quality.

The only thing I want to mention is if you are using a mac, it might not recognize it because your mac machine is blocking it. You just need to go to Settings-> Security & Privacy. Then unlock if needed and click the allow button.

Great Unit!
One flaw: You can't turn the volume completely off with the main nob. I have talked by email with Presonus and they did not really help. Saying that it is a matter of gain staging. So be prepared, you will need a monitor station hooked to your Quantum 2 in order to mute the sound of your monitors...
