Murder on Castaway Island Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

On a cloudless summer day, ghostwriter Phyl Long and educator Virgie Campbell meet as they wait for a private boat to Castaway Island. The attraction between the two is immediate, as is the excitement of a relaxing weekend getting to know each other. But once they arrive on the island, Phyl and Virgie discover things aren’t what they should be. After meeting the other guests, they realize the staff are confused, there’s no Wi-Fi, and the phone coverage is spotty. And there’s no way to leave the island.

A charged accusation. A death. Another death, and then another…and another… As their fellow island occupants are murdered one by one, Phyl and Virgie realize their only hope of escaping is to work together to unmask the killer. But how does each know that the other isn’t using their budding romance as cover for a very twisted plan?

I have always loved Agatha Christie and was delighted to find this sapphic version of one of the more memorable Christie novels. Of course, I made a comparison between Gael's version and Christie's version. And, obviously, it's not exactly the same because it is the present day, and the characters are all women. And, that's what makes this unique and a worthy novel in its own right.
Gael does an excellent job of creating great characters, dare I say it, even better than the great Christie. And it's the characters that make this book intriguing and one that I just couldn't put down.
My knowing the original version inside and out didn't take away from Castaway Island. Gael's female characters made it a page turner.

This is a simple but interesting mystery. The writing style is plain but conveys enough description to advance the plot and keep the reader interested. This book would be perfect to read on a rainy weekend or as a lazy beach read.

When eight seemingly unconnected strangers are summoned to a secluded island, each has a unique reason for coming. Little do they know that the real reason is murder.

Murder on Castaway Island is a clever and suspenseful reimagining of an Agatha Christie classic set in contemporary times and with Sapphic characters. The mystery sparkles in this setting thanks to compelling characters and heart-pounding suspense.

Whether or not you’re a Christie fan, this exciting whodunnit will keep you turning the pages long into the night then force you to sleep with a light on when you finally get to sleep!

I got hooked on murder mysteries when I started reading Agatha Christie books after I had my first baby. She's now 52 so that was a very long time ago. This reminded me of those books. I love trying to figure out who did it and my favorite books are the ones I get wrong. But I'm not wrong very often. This one was easy, I figured it out pretty early. And I was sure I was right all the way up to the moment the person I picked was murdered! And that made me love this book even more! It keeps you guessing and what more could you want? There are a lot of characters to keep track of which would be hard for an older mind, like mine, if the author hadn't added a list of names and short bio for each in the beginning.
I am looking forward to her next book!

I'm new to reading and prefer romance to mystery. This said, I watched the movie, And Then There Were None in 1989 and was curious what a sapphic version of the Agatha Christie story would be like. I'm glad I decided to broaden my horizons because I absolutely loved this novel. I felt more for the characters in Alicia's book than I did for the characters in the movie and I was rooting for Phyl and Virgie to escape death. Not saying they did. I wouldn't dare throw out spoilers, but I will say the two women have great chemistry and sleuth skills, making this wonderful WhoDunIt a page turner.

This twist on an Agatha Christie mystery is a fun, fast paced read. With good character development and an easy reference list at the beginning you are soon engrossed in a tale of who done it. For mystery lovers this is not to be missed.

This mystery was so much fun to read. I loved the characters and the sprinkling of clues throughout the story. The writing is clear and descriptive and made following the storyline of each “castaway” easy. I tried to savor the chapters so that I did not finish too quickly. Thanks for sharing your imagination with us!

Alicia Gael's first novel is an engaging read that keeps you guessing. Great characters (including a few I loved to hate!), exciting twists, and a mysterious backdrop made it hard to put this book down. I will 110% purchase her next release!
