Midas 4-band EQ — in a 500 Series Module

The parametric EQ in the esteemed Midas Heritage 300 console has developed a cult following among top front-of-house engineers. The Midas 512 parametric equalizer gives you access to this indispensable tool in a 500 Series module you can take from venue to studio with grab-and-go convenience. With its four overlapping bands, the 512 gives you the surgical sound-sculpting capability for fine-tuning feedback-prone signals or adding punch and presence to instruments and vocals. The 512 delivers the warm, organic, and detailed Midas sound that has been heard by millions of concert-goers and on countless live albums.

Quick, intuitive access for all your sound-sculpting needs

The Midas 512 operates across four fully parametric bands: Bass (20Hz to 400Hz); Lo Mid (100Hz to 2kHz); Hi Mid (400Hz to 8kHz); and Treble (1kHz to 20kHz). Gain (±15dB) and Frequency adjustments are executed via stacked dual-concentric controls — the center knob controls Gain and the outer ring, Frequency. Bass and Treble are shelving filters; pressing the Bell buttons changes the response to peaking. Engineers at Sweetwater appreciate the inclusion of Q controls on all four bands (inactive on Bass and Treble in shelving mode). This classic setup gives you quick, intuitive access for all your sound-sculpting needs.

The essence of the Midas sound

Top live sound engineers swear by the Midas sound. The warmth, depth, spatial and ambient detail, and organic nature of that sound is the result of decades of circuit design experience and the use of top-drawer componentry. You’ll find it all in the 512. Midas — never content to rest on their laurels — has engineered the 502 with a high-performance balanced input stage that allows extremely low noise, with an impressively high common-mode rejection of -70dB at 1kHz. The 512’s high-power balanced output delivers the clarity and punch associated with classic vintage British console EQ designs.

great EQ for the money

This is not the EQ that I originally intendeed to buy, but after sometime waiting for the other to be in stock, I bought a pair of these and couldn't be happier.

Great Sounding EQ

When these EQ modules first came out they were $800 each, now they're much more affordable. I have a pair of them (matched with their compressor counterparts) patched to inserts on a pair of my mixing console channels (I use them as "Super Channels" for mixing vocals). The parametric EQ is very useful for shaping vocal tone in a mix.

Great sounding, low noise
Lots of control, full parametric
Amazing price
Fits API 500 rack perfectly

I'll be getting more of these EQ (and compressors :-)

MIDAS - Unreal Bang for the Buck

I own a handful of 500 EQ and other signal processing modules.

Comparatively for its intended applications, this MIDAS 512EQV2 is just as nice, well constructed, and sonically pleasing as its more expensive 500 counterparts.

It works!!
Get it if you are thinking about it :)

Excellent 4band EQ

Amazing EQ that really makes it easy to dial in a tone. I was hesitant due to price. But Midas always used to have a good reputation prior to being purchased. Well I can confidently say I am happy with it. So much so I ordered a second unit only after a couple of hours of use. Btw: not sure why they include such a beautiful wooden box. But that was a super nice touch.

Just as useful as the SSL E-EQ's I've got

I've compared the EQ curves between a pair of these and a pair of SSL E-EQ's and there are a lot of similarities. Neither use transformers or inductors.

The Midas can dial up the same EQ points (4 bands) and has even more flexibility in the LF and HF since it has two additional knobs for variable Q when those bands are in bell curve mode. The SSL does a bit more of a lop-sided curve for the LF and HF which includes a very slight resonant bump reminiscent of a Pultec. I guess that's the SSL EQ tone but it is very slight. The Midas EQ curves are well balanced and flat where there's no boost or cut. The frequency curves remind me of a plugin (in a good way). I think the Q has even more range than the SSL's. The knobs on the SSL are crowded so I think I like the Midas dual-concentric choice better, especially when you consider there are two additional Q knobs on the Midas. I found the Midas to be as quiet as the SSL's with minimal noise floor in both.

After putting one of these through its paces, I ordered another for a stereo pair. No regrets and I do recommend them as a much less expensive alternative to the SSL E-EQ! Now if only Midas would release a 1073 EQ clone someday...
