Big on Power, Easy to Get to the Gig

Engineers at Mesa/Boogie tapped into player feedback to create the Subway WD-800 bass amp head, and they're calling it their ultimate lightweight hybrid bass amplifier. The WD-800 combines the warm tube preamp section from Mesa's Walkabout bass amp with the lightweight Class D power section from the Subway series. Armed with a variable damping control plus an active 5-band EQ, this is an extremely versatile bass amp. And thanks to its light weight, and with the help of the included gig bag, the Mesa/Boogie Subway WD-800 won't break your back getting it to your gigs.

Innovative power amp damping control

The power amp damping feature on the Subway WD-800 bass amp is a great way to fine-tune its response to suit your choice of speaker cabinet and your musical style. In its High setting, the sound is tighter and a bit more articulate. It's a great match for modern basses with active electronics, and it's also great with ported speaker cabinets. In Low mode, the sound is looser with more "bloom," and it balances nicely with sealed speaker cabinets. Medium damping is a pleasing midpoint between the two.

Plenty of juice for any rig or gig

The power section of the Mesa Subway WD-800 bass amplifier can push 800 watts, ensuring that you have enough juice for any gig out there. Whether it's driving a 1 x 12" cabinet for a smaller jazz combo or pushing an 8 x 10" cab for a huge sound across a large stage, the WD-800 can cover it without breaking a sweat. It can even drive 800 watts at 2 ohms, offering more flexibility when it comes to combining speaker cabinets in your rig. And all that horsepower comes in the form of an exceptionally lightweight Class D power section.

Total tonal control

Mesa Engineering has a long legacy of iconic bass amplifiers. Many bassists at Sweetwater who choose Mesa amps do so for their extreme tonal flexibility. Its active 5-band EQ features three midrange bands, plus bass and treble bands. On top of that, you've got a Passive Mid control and a variable Highpass Filter control to tighten up your overall sound. A series FX loop accommodates your favorite effects pedals and external signal processors. And you have plenty of setup options with Pre/Post EQ, Line/Mic, and Ground/Lift switches on the Subway WD-800's balanced XLR output.

Mesa/Boogie Subway WD-800 Bass Amplifier Head Features:

  • Robust 800-watt power section can push nearly any cabinet

1st bass amp

Guitar is my first instrument. Conflicting schedules and location convinced me into buying my own bass rig. So I got the WD-800, 115,112&210 subway cabs running at 2 ohms. A million appealing tones right out of the box. The foot switch and cable is on the way which will effectively add a 2nd channel.

At the time of this review, I don't see any need for a preamp or overdrive pedal but what do I know? It seems both are built right into the head. Distortion maybe for metal. I had this rig for about 2 years and just scratched the surface. But I travel a lot for work with only a travel guitar.

The effects loop will be interesting when I get around to it. I really should find some newsgroups. But until then my Warwick 5BO thumb bass delivers sonic bliss as I'm told by my observers. I'm trying to figure out if compression is in the head somewhere.

If you're on the fence with purchasing, I say go for it. I never tried this amp in the store just extensive research. I lost a couple friends by not taking their advice but am certain it was the correct decision for me. You will need ear plugs with this configuration.

Can't wait to take it outside and crank it up standing behind it. A work in progress indeed but a good investment. Go for it.

A titan of a bass amp

I have had the WD800 for a year now. I run it into a Subway 115 and a TE 1048h (an older UK made 410 cabinet), both rated 8ohms. No matter how you combine it, with just the 115 or the 410 or both, it sounds super solid. If you are after that warm tubey tone with just a reasonable amount of a growl at higher volumes, this is a great choice.
With the full stack I tend to use 2 ohm setting because it's safer and the signal breaks up way before running into the limiter, adding that nice subtle growl already at lower volumes. With the combination of the 115 and 410 this amp is in its element so to say, and really shows what it can do.

The amp is ultra light especially considering the extensive amount of power and features. You even have a USB (power only) plug so you can attach a gooseneck light as needed. I plugged in a red LED for show.
The amp has plenty of horses to cut through the mix when playing with very loud rock bands. Earplugs are a must.
The only disadvantage due to the light weight of the head is it can potentially vibrate off the speaker (slick tolex covered ones, that is, rat fur seems not to be an issue), but there are some easy DIY hacks to avoid that.
In a year or so of frequent use it has never actually vibrated off the speaker, but it did move around some.

During that year I had only one actual issue, when it went into protect mode after plugging it into a bad speaker. It overheated but powered off in time before anything bad could happen.
I'm eternally grateful for Ed Nystrom's great advice on everything relating to build this killer bass rig, of which the WD800 is its centerpiece.

WD-800

I own the D800+. It's a beast and I love it. I wanted a way to get some tubey grind without using a pedal or sansamp. After all the you tube vids, I decided to go WD instead of the new TT. Truth is, I don't need 2 channels and a bunch of knobs. Actually, it's kinda like having 2 channels with the switchable eq. I use the foot switch eq to go from fingers to pick without the annoying issues that happen with that. I would like to see a di level control, but not a big deal.

Mesa wins again

I've been a GK guy since the mid 80's and recently became a Mesa convert. Bought the TT-800 and fell in love with it, so I thought I'd give the WD a try. Both are fantastic amps, but very different in tone shaping. Killer amps for bass. Thanks to Joel and all the SW gang. Next up maybe a Subway 210 cab.

Incredible Value, Amazingly Versatile, Powerful and Good Sounding

This amp is top-notch! I chose it to power my Barefaced One10 & Two10 cabs in various combinations (Vertical 3x10!), so I needed lots of power and portability, as well as 2ohm capability. I play all styles on electric and upright. In fact, I just doubled elec/upright on an outdoor gig with a loud drummer and loud guitarist, and I could be heard & felt the way I intended, which the amp/cabs offered up effortlessly. While it may not be the most "transparent" amp for upright, the tone shaping features - especially the high-pass filter - make it ideal for achieving a high volume, or to tune to a difficult room. This replaces my Markbass Tube 800, which also has a lot of tone shaping features, but this WD-800 is just better-sounding off the bat and super easy to dial in a particular tone. Aux in & Headphones are a huge plus.

It's hard to imagine a more quintessentially modern guitar amplifier than a Mesa/Boogie, and when Sweetwater guitarists want high-gain tone, Mesa is where they start. One thing we love about these amps is their sheer versatility, such as the massive range of tone you get from each channel, the freedom to use the tubes you love, onboard CabClone cabinet emulation, and MIDI control. And it's not just guitar amps - Mesa/Boogie's bass amps and pedals are equally cool. What's more, thanks to our incredibly close relationship with Mesa, you can even customize your own amp right here on Sweetwater's website! Get the sound and style you want from your next amp, with a Mesa/Boogie from Sweetwater.
