Max, the Sequel

Rate this book
Robert Montagnet and Dan Cooper are a nice gay couple who live in a nice waterfront condo in a nice, touristy part of Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

At least, that’s who they’re pretending to be.

After five months on the lam, Dr. Crane is strained to the point of breaking—he just wants it to be over. But, with his mental and physical health in decline, living where he doesn’t speak the language and relying on his partner for everything, he feels trapped.

Just the way Max likes it, of course.

When Crane is presented with an opportunity to clear his name once and for all, he’s compelled to take it… But, it means betraying the young man who thoroughly intoxicates him in ways he had never imagined possible.

Can Crane break his addiction or is he too far down the rabbit hole to escape?

A book with this level of mindfck doesn’t have business to have this many amazingly romantic quotes 🥹

“Despite the things Max had done to him, despite everything he’d been through, no matter how hard he tried to snuff them, Crane was helpless when it came to his feelings for the little psycho.”

This is the most twisted, toxic love story I’ve ever read.
Max is back, and still up for something really really special treatment for his lover.
I was excited when learned that Max’s sequel is coming, while for me the first book was - in its own twisted way- a hea, I was really intrigued about their future.

Max is still the sweetest thing ever,
““Yeah, I don’t know why I bother either,” he replied. “It’s not like you’ll stop being an awful little prick.””

And Crane has some things to figure out,
“You’re a shitty psychologist, Doc. The worst. You nuh-know that?”

But in the end the most important thing revealed about their relationship. My biggest question was always the consent, and the sequel gives us the answer.

Rollercoaster in the finest, and has a great rhythm, fabulous writing, unique atmosphere and some more mind fckery.

It has tender moments, hot scenes and high angst.
“But right then, all Crane felt was a deep, overpowering hunger for the young man who had stolen his soul from him.”

Can’t read as standalone, mind the triggers and highly recommended!

I have received an ARC from the Author and I’m leaving a honest and unbiased review.

“You lie and you lie and you lie,” Crane said in a barely restrained voice. “And I keep taking it and taking it like a fucking idiot.”

Where to start? I do not want to dive into the plot as that may be spoilery BUT Max, the Sequel managed to be a crazy roller coaster of mind fuckery of a book as the first one - if not more. Crane and Max have to have the most messed up relationship in any book I have read in a long time (or ever?). Also, Dr Crane is the biggest fool alive; he's a bonafide idiot. And psycho Max, goodness....

There were oddly sweet moments too.

“Okay, so you like it when I’m incapacitated because I need you and treat you nicely when I am.” He chuckled. “That sounds awfully—” “—codependent.” Max glanced his way again briefly, still looking oddly flustered. “Yeah, I’m well aware.”

I honestly really enjoyed Max the Sequel. This book made me laugh so much. It was a train wreck you could not look away from. I also felt like I got gaslit and manipulated right along with Dr Crane. It was dizzying! Bey Deckard is an amazing writer and has become a favourite! I honestly am in awe of his mind.

This is not a standalone. To fully understand and appreciate this story you need to read book one, also please check trigger warnings as this book is not for everyone.

“You lie and you lie and you lie,” Crane said in a barely restrained voice. “And I keep taking it and taking it like a fucking idiot.”

The above quote really sums up the book. This was everything I could have wanted in a sequel to Max and more. These books are really difficult to review because there is just so much going on. A lot of moving parts. A lot of deception. SO MANY LIES. There are probably many more lies that we don't even know about. I freaking loved it. I'm not sure how to review this book without spoilers, so I am just going to be discussing a lot of my thoughts and impressions along the way.

I would love to get a peak into Max's brain and what he is thinking. Max has to be one of the most interesting characters I have ever read. He's terrible, but nice. He does the worst things, but he sometimes means well. He manipulates to get his way, but there's usually a point to it. I love it. Just as I have all these conflicting feelings about Max, so does Crane.

Crane was helpless when it came to his feelings for the little psycho.

“I know you don’t believe me, but”—he rubbed his thumb over the head of Crane’s dick, causing him to gasp—“you make me happy, Doc.”

Poor Crane. He is drugged and gaslit so much in this. I do feel for the man, but he should know who and what he's dealing with at this point.

I drugged you—I didn’t poison you. Gee whiz, you’d think you’d be used to it by now.

I mean, Max has a point there. Are you really surprised? Even with all the deception and lies though, Max does appear to care about Crane in his own way. Max seems to even enjoy taking care of him a few times throughout the story.

“Doc, you know I’d cut the cock off anyone that hurt you.” Crane glanced over at Max. “Sure, you would.” Max shrugged and held out a cocktail napkin to Crane. Sighing, Crane accepted the napkin and dabbed his mouth with it. “You’d cut someone’s cock off just for the fun of it . . . then blame it on me.” Wide-eyed, Max placed a hand dramatically on his chest. “Moi?”

Occasionally, Crane gets in some retribution when Max pisses him off. Max lets Crane punish him sometimes, but, honestly, it's probably because he likes it.

Punishing Max was the only way he ever felt remotely in control of his life . . . a heady, delusional fiction.

These two are oddly codependent, but they really do kind of work together. I think Crane is strangely capable of dealing with Max's crazy.

“I should fucking hate you.” “Yeah. You’re kind of . . . uh, funny that way.” Max gave a soft laugh. “Maybe you should see a therapist.”

There is this whole discussion towards the end of the book that revolves around how someone "hesitated". I choose to live in my ignorant bliss and believe that Max was being a little honest there. Max even goes so far as to attempt to prove that Crane can trust him.

“You’re going to fuck me over the minute I either annoy you or bore you.” Max’s eyes went flinty as he studied Crane. “What if I promised not to."

Crane tells Max to do something to make him believe that he can trust Max. It's left up to Max to decide what he should do to prove that he's trustworthy. Max chooses well IMO. I loved this whole scene and the sex after. I guess I'm twisted. *shrugs*

He was a goddamn fucking sentimental imbecile for believing Max’s bullshit about this being over a “hesitation.”

Crane’s epiphany about Max’s schemes would keep for now—his rage would fuel another violent defilement of Max’s body one day soon. But right then, all Crane felt was a deep, overpowering hunger for the young man who had stolen his soul from him.

There were so many moving parts in this book. Then you finally see the end game and wow. Bey Deckard you are a true chess master. I bow down to thee. Thank you for writing this book.

Always remember... There were no coincidences when it came to Max.

***I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion.***

Crane is just too stupid to live, and it’s like an open invitation to fuck with his head. No wonder Max couldn’t resist doing just that.

The prequel was better, but I still somewhat enjoyed this one.

What can I say about this? It's Max... again. It's not a standalone, so you have to read the first one. As with all my books, look at my tags/shelves here on Goodreads to know what you're getting into.

Where do I start?

The amazing Bey Deckard has done it to me again. Max, book 1, gave me a hangover.. but this??

this felt like I was pushed and pulled, gaslit, baited, teased, loved, and thrown off a cliff.

Max the sequel vastly outdid book 1. If you enjoyed the first, you will definitely be in for a rollercoaster ride with this one.

What's real? What's not? What's the truth? What's the lie? Does the good outweigh the bad? Does the end justify the means? Just when you think Crane came to his senses, we-as well as him-lost it all just to fall in love with Max again.

This book was the epitome of a toxic relationship. If that's the kind of emotional rollercoaster you want to ride, then this is the ONE for you. The chosen one.

Bey Deckard is an amazing writer who's able to paint insanity is if it made perfect sense. So buckle up and get ready for a "vacation" you'll never forget.

*5 stars. I rank this book light grey on my darkness scale.*

These two quotes sum up this awesome mindfuck of a series.

Craving for a toxic relationship riddled with uncertainty, lies, manipulation and duplicity cooked up by one person and the other coming back for more?
Look no further, but start with book 1 okay.

I loved Max so much. Amazing character.

I had a wonderful time going back to Max. He is a fascinating character.  The mystery behind him and the reasons of his actions make it so hard to put the book down. I love the mind games he play and everything about him. I still don't care much for Crane, but I'm ok with that. It doesn't make me enjoy the book any less. I felt this one lack a bit of the inicial shock we had from meeting Max and his behaviour, but I still loved it so much.

Max the Sequel by Bey Deckard

♾️♾️♾️♾️

The mindf*ckery continues.

I don’t even fully know what to say about this one without giving spoilers but my god, these 2 are the worst and best together.

Max is a pathological liar and I STILL don’t know what parts were true and which weren’t. So many things were left unanswered, but I guess that’s how it feels to be Crane.

Because he just never knew!!!!

The things Max puts Crane through are just cruel, and by this point, Crane is basically a junkie and can’t give Max up … so the circus continues.

I enjoyed book 1 more. That might have been because I was still learning Max and his ways. The sequel was a bit repetitive in the events that happened, which led to a conclusion/sort of reason eventually, but I was looking harder this time. Deciphering what was going on. Picking up on the little details. But I suppose that’s the definition of insanity - same thing over and over - same result.

Do they get a happy ending? Well… I guess that’s for them to decide haha I still wish we got a few more conclusions than we did. Like Max’s dad and that story. I don’t think the ending is overly satisfying for the reader, BUT it fits the story because uncertainty and the unknown are basically *them*

When you think Max can’t get any more psycho, he goes and gets more psycho. This man needs locking away and the key thrown away but I would also protect him with my life.

These two books are so well written. I enjoyed the storyline of both stories.. to much. I shouldn’t have enjoyed them as much as I did. There’s some parts that are mentally drilled into my brain. Zucchini for one - if you know, you’ll never forget.
The plot twists within this story line are insane. I read a lot and normally I can see plot twists before they come, I didn’t see anything with this. I couldn’t guess anything. I had no idea where Max was going with his actions. I don’t think he even knew either.
Max honestly puts all other psychos to shame, he’s one of the most unhinged main characters I’ve read about, plus some more on top of that. But I also feel protective over him like he’s a younger brother, so as much as he carries all of the red flags and then some more, I will not have a bad word said about him and I will protect him at all costs.

These two books are definitely not for the faint of heart. Max is a toxic, controlling, manipulative individual who shows absolutely no remorse, and he will most likely drive you insane.. (yes I’m sticking up for him.. I think?) he is a very complex character. He is like marmite. You will either love him, or hate him. He is definitely not for everyone. And if you’re interested in reading his duet, you need to be aware/prepared that you’re getting into something intense and I psychically can not stress this enough. He is not for everyone. But not all is bad. He also has traits which does make you think he is one of the most caring individuals you could come across. (I think? I guess. Maybe.)

You definitely need to be open minded reading his duet. You’re most likely going to love him. And you’re going to be confused about it.

When I heard that there was a sequel coming I was so freaking excited!!! I’ve never read a book like Max before, and luckily Bey wrote more about these two twisted men!

To read this book you definitely need to read the first in my opinion. You’ll miss all the background story and all the mindfu*k from the story if you don’t. I don’t think you’ll fully understand the dynamics and the push and pull between them if you don’t either….

So Max and Crane are back with new adventures. And it’s the same rollercoaster ride of happenings that I was expecting. Not a boring moment for sure!!! Max is still himself, snarky and unpredictable. Crane is still convinced he needs Max, and somehow trusts him over and over again.

This is not a walk in the park on a sunny day story. The triggers are there for a reason! I loved this book, even if it’s twisted as F! It was exactly what I wanted and what I hoped. And it’s fiction!

Bey writes amazingly well. I have no problem getting caught up in the story, and I’m definitely hoping for more!

4.3 stars!

Still a Mind-fuckery!

This is as it's previous book... Twisty, intriguing, lacking of morals... A bit of an uncomfortable read?!

Max is a true Psychopath, I'll give him that! Manipulative, crazy, always pushing the limits...

“Okay, so you like it when I’m incapacitated because I need you and treat you nicely when I am.” He chuckled. “That sounds awfully—”

“—codependent.” Max glanced his way again briefly, still looking oddly flustered. “Yeah, I’m well aware.”

But, I did like that there's some kind of choice in this book... I think?! 🤔😅

Well, somehow, the MCs' relationship works for them... So, as long as they're happy with it, I guess that's what matters. 😁

“...Crane recognized and accepted it for what it was. It was a defence mechanism. A coping strategy. A stalling technique. A cry for help.
Crane sighed.
Then why does it feel like love?”

“If there was one thing life with Max certainly wasn’t, it was boring.”

Just maybe, Dennis Crane was better off being in prison where Max can’t get near him. How wrong is that? Of course, Max is up to his old tricks and has it all planned out. Dennis is now out of jail and on his way to Mexico, with Max himself.

Of course, Max has everything under control. But Dennis is still fearful that the police will find him and then what? When Max keeps him filled with drugs and Dennis’ physical and mental health state are fractured even more, he has to make a decision. He can’t deal with the lies, drugs, the stress and illness and co-dependance that Max has dealt him.

Crane is ready to turn his back and turn himself in.

But when Max feels crossed he alway has those dark manipulations up his sleeve and puts them to work. But Crane does find a way to get his revenge in his own way.

But both Max and Crane are lost to each other in a strange addiction. No matter what the deception is, is there a way out for them both and who will take it?

Bey Deckard brings Max back in “Max, The Sequel” and it’s even darker from the first book “Max”. Big kudos to the author because I have no idea how this could be even more mind boggling and darker than the first book. Again, this novel is not for everyone, it goes beyond: darkness, depravity, study of evil, manipulation, drugs, erotica, sexuality, addictions and co-dependency.

It took me a while to decide what to write in my review, but no matter what I came up with I didn’t want to reveal anything that goes on in this story. It really needs to be read, if you have the courage and mind set. It will definitely disturb your own emotions and drive you just a little crazy!

My only disappointment was there isn’t an audio for this one. Hope there are plans for it.

I highly recommend “Max” and “Max The Sequel” for those who dare! Be sure to start with “Max” first. Excellent work, Bey Deckard!

I may have rated this book higher, but some plot points just bothered the heck out of me. Plus, editing errors seriously derailed the reading experience for me.

Dr. Crane, in this sequel to Max, is even more gulable, whiney and trusting. And Max is immensely more demented, sadistic and conniving than ever. Both characters' development in this second book in the series just didn't sit well with me. Both men were to "over the top" for me to be believable.

Additionally, each man loses a body part, but for differently twisted reasons. The books conclusion left much to be desired, hinting at a possible third book is in the offing.

This sequel also brought too many supplemental characters into the story. The world building is slightly above par, considering the takes place nearly every corner of the world. Canada, Mexico, France and other countries.

The sexual scenarios are surprisingly brief but rough. In some instances, a bit too rough. I like a sampling of BSDM if the situation calls for it, but this book contains scenes of outright torture, dismemberment and cruelty.

One good point is Max's sharp-tounged sense of humor. The levity it injects into the tale is much needed and keeps Crane off-balance. (In addition to the drugs Max keeps slipping into Crane's drinks.)

In totality, this book was just below the first book in plot development and enjoyablity. And the editing errors were not minor mistakes. Repeated words within the same sentence, missing punctuation and other grammatical blunders detracted from the reading experience.

Alexa play Gaslighter by The Chicks.

Like the first book, this surprised me with the intricate ways that Max was able to manipulate and fuck with Crane. Unfortunately though it mostly just pissed me off while reading. I don’t care how good his ass is, pussy ain’t worth all the shit Crane went through lol. The amount of times Max drugged Crane especially annoyed me, by that point if I were Crane I would have stopped accepting drinks (or anything) from Max.

By the end of the book I genuinely wanted Crane to murder Max, and then turn himself in to the Canadian embassy to be thrown back in prison. At least in prison Crane won’t have to put up with Max anymore. It’s no surprise that Max is clearly a psychopath, and he will probably continue to put Cranes life through hell because Crane is dumb enough to fall for it EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

I’ll admit that I loved the sweet moments between the two. But every time there was a sweet moment I just thought “this is all bullshit,” which it definitely was.

Despite Max driving me insane lol, this book was still addicting to read. I’ll definitely read the next one if there is one. But man, I hope that Crane isn’t as dumb. You can fuck Max and still be smart, man. Honestly, I would love if Crane becomes more of a psycho himself. I like to think that we saw a bit of that when Crane went through with cutting off Max’s finger. Let’s go full crazy (but smart) in the next book, maybe fuck with Max’s head like the way he fucked with Crane’s head.

Holy hell did Bey Deckard pull off an amazing end to this wild story.

As with the first book, the premise is such that the "dark" theme could have easily come across as just a gimmick (as dark romance tends to feel to me), but no - there's a constant feeling of something being off, and even small victories and temporary relief are accepted by both the POV character and the reader as just that, small and temporary. And yet, somehow, it's not a downer of a book - at the end it just leaves you giddy in a bit of an unhinged way, much like the characters.

It's also so much better than the first one - with a small critique for the "being drugged and losing time" thing being a bit too similar to the first instalment - but all bases were covered for the things that the reader might question, and the story came together in a way that was really entertaining while remaining plausible enough.

It was full of small things that made me highlight something every other page - peculiar quirks in one character's speech, well-placed quips contrasting with the unfolding situation, the deadpan observations made by the POV character...

I loved both the MCs and the side characters. I just know there's gonna be reviews out there being like "but why wouldn't so and so do this or that" and no, I support silly spineless lust-driven no-purpose protagonists just as much as I love the devious calculating self-serving maniacal ones. I loved them all.

Damn, what a cool book.

Crane‘s and Max second adventure started with a bang and ended with a helluva bang!

Those were the scenes I was looking forward to when going gaga about finding out there’s a sequel.

The middle parts I was a bit conflicted about tbh. But probably in a good way? There were just… so… many… lies. I wanted to pull my hair out and smash my head against the nearest surface more than once. Or maybe it was Max head I wanted to smash. I really felt Crane’s dilemma not knowing if I wanted to fuck Max or murder him. I got to a point where it got SO frustrating and I felt myself going a little crazy. But I guess that’s the beauty of the book? It was RELENTLESS! No hope for the wicked, no easy out, that’s for sure…

I think I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first one, but it definitely got some strong emotions out of me and it captures the essence of the Max and Crane of the first book perfectly. They are still something else and even more certifiably insane…

It really takes some masterful writing to pull of writing two characters as batshit as those two and still make you… like them.

I know this installment got good reviews but I really hated it. The stupidity of Crane was not normal. It went beyond what could be considered authentic. His lack of any desire or skills to try and control and better his own life is unbelievable especially for someone who had a Doctorate. In order to get a Doctorate you must at least have above average IQ and with that you must be able to come up woth one or two ideas of survival. Even apart from IQ humans are created with the ability to adapt and ajust in order to survive but no Xrane is completely useless on his own although he is approaching 40. Even when he is left with a new identity, a credit card and a bag of clothes he loses that too. I am completely disgusted!!
I don't even know what was the purpose of this sequel. Usually a story is a journey a protagonist goes thorugh facing challenges and obstacles until they get to some breakthrough. Hanging around with a psychopath who abuses you physically, mentay and maims you and failing to get yourself out of that situation js just pathetic and depressing.

How can one man be so, so stupid. If this were a true story I would feel terrible for the manipulation Crane went through. But this is fiction and HOLY FUCK MAN WAKE UP!! I wanted them to go overboard on the yacht. To take each other out in a frenzy. I just could not feel bad for Crane. He was so flat as a character. Weak and unbelievably stupid. But again, I could not put this book down until I finished it.

The continuing adventures of Max and Dennis!

If this book were posted on AO3, it'd be tagged with Dead Dove - Do Not Eat. So be warned. But, if you read the first one and you're back for more, you know what you're getting into.

I wonder how many times Max can pull something like this and still reel Dennis in?

I wonder how many times Bey Deckard can pull something like this and still reel me in?

There's probably no limit.

Update: changing my rating to a full five stars. I can't stop thinking about it.

This is a fucked up book to review. On one hand it's just super toxic and incredibly fucked up to read.
On the other. It's consistent. There's this let down when psycopathic character suddenly become caring or reformed in books but this, does not suffer from that. Max is consistently Max and it is amazing and disturbing and intriging and something you can't look away from. And this is a story about addiction in away that makes me wonder weather the author is an addict him or herself because it is extremely well done. The writing is so real and so careful to details. But it's a hard one to read because no one is the "good guy" but I think that's the point. So maybe 4.5?

What a mindf$%k!

If I thought book 1 was a mindf%$k, book 2 was that and more. Max was a master manipulator and Crane was a codependent idiot always believing the psycho manipulator could change. So many lies. Mental abuse. I wonder how all this will end?
