Couldn’t put down this story about Asher and Libby. This new author is very imaginative and creative and I cannot wait for the next in the series. Must read!

I really liked this story. It mixed shifter world, magic with Greek mythology to give a different explanation for wolves. I liked the setup of this mythology world and how it played a subplot to the story. I loved how it was a story of overcoming tragedy and getting a second chance. I liked the bit of mystery of who the bad guy was and why. But mostly I loved the characters and thought they were both fun and interesting. I was glued to the end to see if Asher would get Libby to give him a second chance and what insanity would occur. I read it in one sitting and cannot wait to see what happens next.

Ash was a Protean Alpha shifter and knew that Liberty was his mate even when they were very young, but she was human. Libby was sent away And so was he for different reasons from their hometown by their alpha. But then years later she came back after years of heartache. Ash was ready to claim her as his mate. But the evil in this interesting and exciting story keeps trying to make them stay separated and destroy their happiness.

Malicious Envy is Kitt Rose's debut paranormal romance, and I was lucky to receive an advanced copy to honestly review.

For the story, we have Asher (Ash) Stefan and Liberty (Libby) Dahl as the main characters. After a string of EXTREMELY bad luck and multiple deaths, Libby returns home in hopes of a fresh start. She's in a really dark place, when Ash comes back into her life, wanting to pick up where they started before she moved--and maybe take things to the next steps. Ash is a Marked Protean, a specialized decedent of the Greek Titans with the ability to shift into any animal at will (even dragons). It's his birthright to become Alpha, but someone is determined to not let that happen. Even take out Libby, Ash's true fated mate, to do it.

I liked the creation of Homeplace and the array of characters. Each were distinct enough with their own personalities to not get overshadowed or forgotten. It also opened up the possibilities of more books. It was clear from the beginning that the author put a lot of thought into the Protean's backstory and lineage. Proteans are a new take on shifters I've never seen before, so the creativity aspect was enthralling in itself. Not to mention little clever moments like having twins named Liberty and Justice--I enjoyed those. The story as a whole was fast-paced and easy to read. It kept my interest the entire time.

There were moments of too much backstory, and even in dialogue, it was sometimes too dense and complex to get through. I know the Proteans are complicated creatures, but the heaviness was jarring sometimes. I also wish we saw more fire from Libby. I know she went through a great deal, but she was very fragile. And at the end, her moment of empowerment felt too lackluster. I wanted her to get some serious revenge against the villain. The Marked concept was great, and I really wanted to see more of Ash's abilities. I hope we see more in coming books--which I'll definitely be reading.

Great start to a series! A fresh take on shifters and a love story so powerful, it'll defy the odds...and the Greek Gods.
