Make Her Wish Come True Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 420 ratings

A lesbian romance where the realest thing about a fake relationship is all the possibilities.

Abby Baxter’s burning ambition to be a reporter gets a boost when her journalist friend offers her a deal: Fake-date a woman for a story she’s writing on finding love, and she’ll swing Abby a co-writing credit. It’s a dream come true after so long looking for her big break. For years, life and raising her half-sister have gotten in the way.

Erica Goode works two jobs while all her spare energies are focused on her eight-year-old daughter. She would love a social life, but who has time? A deal to be wined and dined if she fakes a relationship sounds fun. Although, it’d help if she wasn’t attracted to her date quite so much. Oh, and if the woman wasn’t averse to children. Really, there’s no way anything can come of it. Right?

Is it possible to get what you wish for, if you’re willing to give it a try?

A.L. Brooks was born in the UK but currently resides in Frankfurt, Germany, and over the years she has lived in places as far afield as Aberdeen and Australia. She works 9–5 in corporate financial systems and her dream is to take early retirement. Like, tomorrow, please. She loves her gym membership, and is very grateful for it as she also loves dark chocolate. She enjoys drinking good wine and craft beer, trying out new recipes to cook, and learning German. Travelling around the world and reading lots and lots (and lots) of books are also things that fight for time with her writing. Yep, she really needs that early retirement.

Just when you think you've seen all there is to see in the fake relationship trope, A.L. Brooks comes up with a surprisingly interesting twist. Erica is a single mom struggling to provide for her daughter, Kayla. Abby is a struggling writer trying to get her foot in the door to be a journalist. The two are brought together by a "Dear Santa" letter Erica's daughter writes to the magazine where Abby works. I appreciated the detail Brooks put into showing the reader the character's thought processes and motivations. The ideas presented throughout the book make sense and contribute well to the overall plot. If you like well written romances with engaging characters, this is the book for you.

A. L. Brooks has provided one sweet story of love bringing two hurting adults to love and a child’s dream for a family in laughing, sweet moments to life. I enjoyed the imagery of the characters and the obvious chemistry that developed between them. It has put me in the mood for Christmas for sure!

A.L. Brooks has written another sweet story. Erica is a single Mom of eight year old, Kayla. As a twenty eight year old working two jobs and living with her Mom, Erica does not have time for anything especially dating. Abby works at Ki publishing but not as a writer likes she wants but in admin. Her best friend got her in the door and promises to help get a writing gig. When Stacy starts having a couple of bad articles after being on top, she seeks Abby’s help in a new column idea. Last Christmas in a letter to Santa it was talked about a young child wanting another Mom as her second parent. When Stacy gets the child and her Mom to come in, it is Abby who has to interview them. Also the Mom, Erica, works in the cafe where she lost it on her when her demanding boss wanted a spinach quiche. As this story unfolds, Stacy is using her clout to talk to the editor in convincing Abby to ask Erica on a date and they will film it with no faces for there column without Erica’s knowledge. There is no way that lying is going to go smoothly. It is a great story about truth, emotions and facing your fears. Loved It!

This book started off with a string of meet cutes for our protagonists, which was pretty adorable. Abby dreams of being a journalist, but is currently stuck as an assistant working at a trendy lifestyle magazine. Her one rule of dating? No kids - not after she gave up most of her 20s to raise her younger sister. Enter Erica, hot mom of 8 year old Kayla who works two jobs to make ends meet and hasn’t been on a date in, well, 8 years. There is a near-immediate mutual attraction that neither of them is willing to fully acknowledge due to their own situations.

Kayla is a wonderful 8 year old - she is written as a pretty mature kid, but her belief that Santa can bring her mom a partner is a wonderfully naive move, and one that brings Erica and Abby together for their 2nd meet cute and indirectly results in an awkward one sided fake dating scheme. I like that Brooks moved on from this scenario relatively quickly and our protagonists developed a deep bond of friendship and being there for each other as friends. Watching their relationship develop was a delight and I appreciated how honest and open they were with each other (well, apart from the wanting to rip each other’s clothes off).

This was a great read with characters I could completely root for.
I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and Ylva Publishing, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was a refreshing take on the fake dating trope. The author gets the usual messy drama caused by the lie out of the way fairly early on. However don't let that fool you into thinking it's smooth sailing from there. This book is packed full of all the drama that you want, both good and bad. Definitely worth your time.

Perfect book for this time of the year. Made me feel all cosy. I really like the fake girlfriend storylines. There was a bit drama but it was always fast solved. Perfect.

Such a beautiful story with outstanding characters.
Brooks definitely doesn’t scrimp on the feelings when writing books. This one hits you with the force of a truck. By the end I was finding it hard to read as I was smiling so much I couldn’t focus on the screen.
Every character in this book is just so real, you will find someone you just want to cheer for and celebrate with when things finally go right. Lots of ups and downs, plenty of sweet moments and huge lightbulb moment.
Yes, it’s a fake date book. But it’s also not, you have to read it to find out what that means. Believe me, definitely not your typical fake date trope.
Loved every word and could not put it down. Grab yourself a warm blanket, a cuppa of your choice and sink into this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars It starts with a letter from Santa

Here we have a heartwarming story about how two soulmates meet all because of a letter to Santa. One of the great parts of the story is it’s depiction of having a relationship with someone who has a young daughter and the realities that it entails. Another is the struggles people have with keeping several jobs to make end meet and the fact that you can still be happy as long as you’re with family. There’s no ‘rags to riches’ Cinderella story. Rather a truthful, realistic portrayal of everyday life, wrapped up in a love story.
