For many, madness is something read about in books or seen on TV—something scary, foreign, and impossible to understand. For Lisa Nugent and her twin sister Shell, however, madness was impossible to avoid—it was home.

Growing up in Essex in the seventies and eighties, Lisa learned quickly that her family wasn’t like her classmates’ families—their mothers were friendly, fierce, or demure women. They had their quirks, but they didn’t assault their husbands, and their frenzied screams didn’t chase their children out of the house in the middle of the night. Not like her mother.

Now, for the first time, Lisa relives those troubled years, recounting her development from a nervous, shy, and friendless child through to the woman she is today. Madness and Me isn’t just a memoir about surviving an abusive, paranoid parent—it’s about the importance of family, the pain of loss, and learning to love even when it’s the hardest thing in the world to do.

A work of tenderness, dignity, and humour, Madness and Me is sure to appeal to lovers of memoir and drama alike.

Hi I'm Lisa Suzanne Nugent. I'm a radiographer in the NHS, drink a little too much wine and just love to create exciting page turner books. I started out writing my personal memoir 'Madness and me.' in 2019 as a cleansing exercise and loved writing so much that I thought I would try my hand at fiction writing, hence, I am proud to release my fiction first novel 'Follow me.'

I'm honoured that you have visited my page and chosen to find out a little more about 'little old me.' I hope you enjoy my books and please let me know what you think.

Until the next time.

Lisa

Very good look into the lives of what families dealing with mental illness are going through. I had no idea.

This book focuses on mental illness and the devastating impact it can have on a family. The author and her twin sister, "Shell" grow up in the shadows of their mother's paranoia, delusions and outbursts of violence, hiding in the garden or beneath covers hoping the storm passes quickly. It seldom passes quickly enough for these vulnerable children.
Their father also lives in the home but must work so they can all have a home and food. Ultimately though he is always loving and supportive of his children and does his best to take care of his ill wife. That is, until the fateful episode when things change and father and daughters move. It is for the best but leaves all three feeling guilty for leaving their wife and mother alone in the family home.
This book leaves its readers grappling with some hard questions... I found myself recognizing that guilt that draws us back to those we care about again and again. But can we truly fix another's problems? Even if we can, is it our responsibility? And if we have almost given our "all", is it okay to say " Enough" before we also get battered by the storm? I personally feel that although we care deeply for our families and friends, we cannot save them in many cases, especially if we risk drowning along with them!
This book is reasonably well written with the exception of a very few spelling mistakes. Or perhaps they are instead, words and phrases common in the U.K. of which I am not aware but I really think it is the former.
A solid read nonetheless.

What I admire about this book is the courage it took to write it. Many of us hide beneath the blankets of pretence...pretending that our childhood was normal without problems. It takes guts to tell it like it was. Also I appreciate the author's writing skill. She stuck to the story without a lot of meaningless filler. I recommend this book to anyone who has dealt with a family member affected by mental illness. There are no easy solutions or cures.

The book is written well , it is a bit to short .I am sure that much more drama happened in the girls lives but author out of kindness kept some information to minimum. Mental health is very poorly understood and even less understandable how horribly it effects the families.Truly If I had a mother like that I would run away.

Lisa tells the difficult story of growing up with a psychotic and abusive mom. Her dad tried hard to keep his twin girls safe even moving them to a separate living quarters. But he died young. Amazingly, the medical personnel did not realize the depth of the mother's craziness, and so she and her sister were left to care for mom alone. A sad book that such situations exist. A book of triumph that the sisters ended the cycle of abuse.

I liked and appreciate the difficulties the author went through to express and relive the past. Can't be easy, may this be a starting point so you might be able to produce another novel.
Recommend to anyone who wants to understand, or already has experienced someone with mental illness and need to hear that you are not alone. It is more common than one would think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really supports mental health issues

The author somehow manages to not only paint a very clear picture of her own traumatic life but somehow manages to show the humour throughout that was evidentially taught to her by her father. A story of understanding parents and their own parenting, becoming a parent and the value of siblings too. An emotional journey and written with such excellent skill, I really enjoyed this read.

Well written and a book you won’t easily forget. The characters come to life in a way that you feel part of the difficulties they share while going through life as a young child and as and as an adult.

What a heart rending beautifully book! I felt every word and my heart goes out to you and your family. Mental illness is so overlooked and the support is so under funded its a disgrace!! Families left to look after loved ones often at the expense of their own health. I can't wait to read the next chapter in your life Lisa and I hope life treats you kinder❤️

Every time I picked up this book to start reading it it was almost near impossible for me to put it down. The author left me hanging by every word. As someone who also has a family member who suffers with mental health issues, I feel grateful for someone (the author) to be so brave and vulnerable to share their story. There is a silver lining to every cloud and this book shows you just that.
