Eccentric Bavarian Auntie Poldi can think of no finer place to wait for death than Sicily, until a brutal murder unleashes her detective instincts and makes her feel more alive than she has in years. Slightly off-mint and felt-tip mark on lower trimmed edge.

Fun!!

Fun!!
In general, I'm not a big fan of cozy mysteries - but the setting and the fact that this is translated fiction overcame my nerves of it maybe not being for me. And maybe because I went in with lower expectations, I really enjoyed this - much more than I ever thought that I would. The narration from the nephew's perspective definitely takes a little getting used to, but the characters on the whole are likable, the setting richly described down to each menu and there are some genuinely funny moments. The mystery is engaging - though not entirely unpredictable - and I've already picked up a copy of the sequel. I liked the romance, and of course, Auntie Poldi herself quite steals the show. It is an old fashioned style of novel to have the nephew tell the tale, but this really works well here. The relationship between the three sisters works well, too, and I appreciate the set-up for the sequel! It's an entertaining, great and breezy sort of vacation read - perfect for the Italian beach or even just your own backyard with a glass of Prosecco!

I approached this mystery with trepidation. I feared it would be a fluffy piece with little to no meat on its bones. I was very wrong. The story had plenty of twists and turns. It also some brick walls. Several times, I had to abandon my theory about who did what to whom. This book also has quite a bit of subtle and rather droll humor. I plan to read the second installment of Auntie Poldi's story.

I've been mourning the loss of the beautiful and entertaining Inspector Montalbano stories set in Sicily since the death of Andrea Camilleri. From the first chapter of "Auntie Poldi and the Sicilian Lions" I felt as though I had found another author whose descriptions of Sicily made the book's setting a tangible character equal to the human ones.
I enjoyed the chaotic humor brought by Auntie Poldi's emotional highs and lows. Some reviewers have said it's sad, but I don't think so, it's just real. Poldi is a crazy ride of uninhibited feeling and behavior both joyful and sad. I loved her, Vito Montana, and the rest of the quirky, charming inhabitants of Torre Archirafi.
I'd say the murder-mystery element is secondary to the setting and the characters, but not in a badly done way. It seems believable, keeps the story in motion, and resolves in a not too outlandish way. But honestly, outlandish isn't out of place or unbelievable in this book! There is also romance (and lust) in the story, but it's not Romance in the overwrought genre way that makes me want to throw a book against the wall and often means I stop reading it altogether.
I definitely recommend and plan to read the next in the series!

I liked it enough. I thought the premise was really good, actually. One thing I really did enjoy was the use of the point of view. The nephew's voice really becomes the interpreter of the story and yet his character only occasionally shows up in the scene. I thought it was a very interesting way to write the story. My rationale for three stars is that I would have much preferred if it were shorter, less descriptive, and it bit faster paced. While I never mind foreign language usage, the beginning of the story was so laden with Italian terms and food items that it was overwhelming to read. Also, the book synopsis/description led me to believe it was a bit more humorous than I found the story.

It was a good story, just a little long winded.

Isolde is the nerdy writer's aunt who's just retired to beautiful Sicily. She finds the body of her young handyman on the nearby beach & promises she will find the one who killed him. Thus, Poldi (her nickname) sets off on a wild adventure throughout her new home, involving many different kinds of policemen, especially one, new friends, dinner parties, sex, knockout drops & bursts of inspiration. Told in a tongue-in-cheek, witty & amusing voice, Poldi is a sassy & complex protagonist with a lot to offer. This is going to be one fabulous mystery series!

This book earned my great appreciation for the sheer pleasure I took in spending time with its heroine. It is unusual to find a murder mystery (or police procedural or anything of its ilk) in which you have a fully functional, quirky, charming, smart, sensual, strong and vibrant older woman in the role of the heroine. Thank goodness for the dynamic character of Auntie Poldi. I adored her and her sisters in law - none of whom are shrinking violets, two-dimensional “older women” or stereotypical “dried up spinster” types - and the equally fallible but endearing inspector (“dear Vito”). It is also unusual to find such an engaging writing style in a book of this genre. Too often, the writing style seems to be just developed enough to convey a great story line and requisite detail, or the story line falls a bit short and is overshadowed by an author’s lovely style. “Auntie Poldi and the Sicilian Lions” blends an enticing mystery and investigation, wonderful writing, and thoroughly endearing and complex characters. I found this novel quite engaging, adored Auntie Poldi, and eagerly await the next book in the series.

I struggled through. There was way too much description. I didn't like the little synopsis that started every chapter and thought it was wasted reading. I felt like it was not getting to the story quickly enough. I felt that it was more geared to teens. I likened it to Nancy Drew books I read as a kid.

Alcoholic, Poldi, is not aging gracefully and struggles with depression since losing her husband. Town she lives in is a depressed depreciating area. Poldi is eccentric, German, and living a Sicilian lifestyle, solving murder mysteries with unconventional methods. At times I found this cute, and funny (and I learned a lot about Sicily, Sicilians, their culture, and food) but more often, a depressing, disturbing, and sad read. Although I miss Poldi, I will not continue reading her adventures and misadventures.

When Poldi, a delightful, sassy, raunchy woman of a certain age, and life experience, moves from Germany to Sicily, she virtually takes over a small village with her outrageous joie de vivre. Giordano writes with great humor and affection for the Sicilian culture and landscape, and with mouthwatering descriptions of the cuisine. As Poldi herself would say, “Namasté Life!” And, oh yeah, there are a couple of troublesome murders to be solved. A truly delightful feel good mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and amusing

A lively whodunnit, this features an unusual heroine, flawed, capricious and fun. With Byzantine twists and turns, it ambles along, inviting you to enjoy the scenery and the quirky characters, until sudden tensions and dangers erupt. There are genius phrases too. Altogether delightful. I shall immediately read the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read...

This short tale introduces some interesting characters, including Auntie Poldi who is known to stand in the buff on her rooftop terrace and gaze at the Mediterranean. As the story develops, one meets a number of characters who are well described by the author. Of course, this is a murder mystery which includes a series of incidents. The events occur in Sicily and are quite well described: you feel as though you are there, and this reviewer did identify correctly many of the places in the story.
As the plot evolves, the author introduces humour, romance and other issues and he does so most appropriately. The identity of the murderer is well camouflaged till the end, at least it was to this reader.
The book probably should deserve a 5 star rating but for an ending which stretches the imagination. Still, it makes for good, quick reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars not too exciting

Found the book long to get to the point. Also, too many characters to keep track of. Auntie Poldi was an unusual person to be investigating and seemed to have no background for this - yet she is allowed to be part of the detective team and had access to information only police should have available. Not a big fan of the book.
